Fox's The Mob Doctor is still certain to be canceled, however three episodes have now aired, and that's more than 52% of our polled readers expected. But it's only a matter of when it gets yanked from the schedule, not if.

No other Fox show is in danger of cancellation at this point, so I bet our long time readers can guess what will be in the headline next week!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • Data

The Simpsons have already been renewed for season 25.

  • ali

last night was actually a decent episode, but probably people already made their minds about this show.

  • Jeff R.

I still say it’s too soon to 5-face Bones until D-Bor’s name is on the dotted line. Old shows can get too expensive to make; 4 at best.

And how low does Glee have to go, ratings-wise, to drop to 4?

“The Simpsons have already been renewed for season 25.”

    Fixed!

I’m sure I have missed that notation on a few more shows as well, I need to have a better way of carrying that information over from season to season.

  • RandyL

I think Family Guy, American Dad and Bob’s Burgers might also already be renewed. I might be wrong though.

  • Jared

Its ashame The Mob Doctor is doing so poorly..Im actually becoming more and more invested after each episode. Its not a bad show at all..but obviously people have made up there minds already and won’t be giving this show a chance.

  • Casey

Almost sure that both Family Guy and American Dad are renewed past this season as well.

But I’m willing to cut Bill some slack on these renewal things especially for animated shows which are all done on different cycles anyway.

“I still say it’s too soon to 5-face Bones until D-Bor’s name is on the dotted line. Old shows can get too expensive to make; 4 at best.”

The results of cast/producer negotiations don’t enter into my predictions. That typically isn’t a problem, and in the rare cases where it is, I wouldn’t have good enough information to be able to matter anyway.

“And how low does Glee have to go, ratings-wise, to drop to 4?”

My difference between 4 and 5 is rather arbitrary (100% of the scripted show average), the only time a show in the 4 or 5 category has been canceled was when there was the decision to end a show because of cast, producer or cost reasons.

But to answer your question, Fox’s scripted show average last week was a 2.4, so below that *currently* and Glee would have 4 faces.

  • Dan

@Bill Isn’t Family Guy and American Dad renewed also.

I vote for The Mob Doctor being cancelled today. 3 episodes seems enough at least for FOX to reshuffle their schedule.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“@Bill Isn’t Family Guy and American Dad renewed also.”

I believe so, have changed the table.

  • Casey

Fox’s index sure does look a lot better than it feels like it should. I’m thinking that’s because of American Idle/X-Factor and the fact that they don’t program at 10 PM.

  • Dan

I think when Raising Hope returns, even with low ratings it will get a full Season 4. Its owned by FOX so one more season = Syndication. Glee will likely get a final full season 5 and Bones is likely to get Season 9 because FOX has nothing else.

  • THE OLD MAN

Mob Doctor is the only one in danger for now.

  • Max Vrany

“Idle” hasn’t aired yet and unscripted shows don’t factor into the index. Their renewal decisions are influenced more by economics and production costs than scripted shows. Factors which the Cancellation Bear doesn’t know enough about.

  • Dan

The Cleveland Show still hasn’t gotten a fifth production cycle which is surprising because with 4 seasons and 88-92 episodes, you would think FOX would give them at least 13 more for syndication which the show has already gotten a deal.

Bob’s Burgers will also likely get a Season 4 since it will have Season 3 leftovers by the time the remaining 13 episodes of Season 2 air.

  • David

They should give Mob Doctor a try on another time. GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!

  • Dinaminjo

Is there any chance FOX moves The Mob Doctor to Friday to see if it can keep 1.0+ rating there?!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Is there any chance FOX moves The Mob Doctor to Friday to see if it can keep 1.0+ rating there?!”

Fox may move it to Friday, but only to burn it off. It’s 100% dead.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Fox’s index sure does look a lot better than it feels like it should. I’m thinking that’s because of American Idle/X-Factor and the fact that they don’t program at 10 PM.”

They have premiered relatively few scripted shows so far, and except for TMD they’ve all been pretty close together in the ratings. That’s what makes it “look a lot better”.

In time, that’s almost certain to change.

  • Tom

MD is obviously dead, though I think Fox will let next week’s episode run as scheduled.

B&K bears watching with Goodwin Games in the wings. I think it airs into 2013, but I don’t know about February.
