Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-30, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) final season 0.46
The Mob Doctor  0.58
Ben And Kate :) :) :) :) 0.87
Bones      0.96
The Mindy Project :) :) :) :) 1.00
American Dad already renewed 1.04
Bob's Burgers      1.08

Family Guy already renewed 1.37
The Simpsons already renewed 1.58

Fox's The Mob Doctor is still certain to be canceled, however three episodes have now aired, and that's more than 52% of our polled readers expected. But it's only a matter of when it gets yanked from the schedule, not if.

No other Fox show is in danger of cancellation at this point, so I bet our long time readers can guess what will be in the headline next week!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

FOX probably only has one show left to cancel this season: Touch.

  • DW

its not coming back after baseball.

  • Chris

Is New Girl’s index based on both episodes that aired last week or just the regular time-slot one (9 PM)?

  • Bill Gorman

“Is New Girl’s index based on both episodes that aired last week or just the regular time-slot one (9 PM)?”

I don’t have any real prediction history to back that up, but I like to track all the original episode ratings, so that makes it easier.

  • RG-X

Mob Dr: gone before the Nov. sweeps begin for sure!

  • AppleStinx

I was hoping it would last long enough for the doctor’s brother to be taught a lesson or perhaps killed. Brothers are losers, sisters are butt-kickers – the same thing in ‘Revolution’.

  • Tyson

The Mob Doctor might air episode four next week, then be pulled during the baseball playoffs. I would understand if Fox aired a repeat–almost any repeat–in that time slot next week.

  • Melanie

When does Fox start airing baseball? Maybe they’re waiting for that to slide Mob Doctor off the schedule never to return. Or maybe Kevin Reilly doesn’t want to have the ‘first cancelled’ honor this year. Lonestar still stings . . . .

  • Dan

@Tom From November 5 until January, Touch will air its 13 episode second season to likely low ratings, where it will likely be cancelled. It could serve as a bridge between The Mob Doctors’ cancellation and The Following’s premiere in February 2013. The Goodwin Games will likely replace either Ben & Kate or Mindy Project, whichever gets cancelled, my bets on Ben & Kate.

You hear people all over saying how bad the numbers are for TMD and how’s it’s so dead and going to be pulled … and they are no doubt correct … I just find it funny looking at the table we still see, majestically perched, substantially lower … Fringe … the show that would not die no matter how many rating point stakes were stuck in it … some things just defy logical explanations.

  • KJ Styles

@Fake Me Out- Agreed 100%, Fox has been completely hypocritical when it comes to Fringe. I know this season is it’s final one but they are going to make NO MONEY on this season unless it gets sold into syndication. Which will mark three straight years of losses for Fox because of Fringe. Yet they cancelled Alcatraz which had DOUBLE Fringe’s ratings.

  • j

It probably helps that Fringe is arguably Fox’s most critically acclaimed show and one of network TV’s 3 most acclaimed dramas.

  • were123

    @KJ Styles
Alcatraz pulling double rating that Fringe? Alcatraz ended the season with a 1.5! Besides Fringe airs on Friday, plus it was a veteran show when it hit badf ratings, unlike The Mob Doctor, whic is a rookie. Rookies with bad ratings dies, veterans of 3+ seasons gets to survive. The the thing is interesting when a show is on season 2. If it gets past season 2, then you can expect season 4 and 5, otherwise it’s dead.
Besides WB lowered fees for Fringe, critical acclaim, executives loving the show, DVR numbers and solid fanbase helps (granted, not that much as the fees, but it’s still better to have all of those!)

  • Tom

@Dan: You may be new here. I’m pretty sure I said Touch would replace MD the day the Fox schedule came out, and I know I said it would be on Nov 5th the morning we saw MD’s premiere numbers.

Regardless, that doesn’t say anything about MD’s 10/8 airing. I think it still airs as scheduled.

  • KJ Styles

@Were123- Fringe was pulling CW numbers at the end of it’s season, so even a 1.5 was about double Fringe’s ratings. Alcatraz got about 90% of Fox’s scripted average, whereas Fringe only had 50%. Since I’ve been coming to this site, I cannot remember a lower rated show being renewed.

As for your argument about Mob Doctor. I agree that it’s dead but probably won’t get pulled from the schedule until after the World Series. It would make no sense to pull it now when most Fox shows not named X-Factor will be pre-empted for the baseball postseason.

  • Bill Gorman

@KJ Styles, Fox doesn’t own Fringe. They make nothing from its syndication.

  • KJ Styles

@Bill- Well if Fox doesn’t own Fringe and makes nothing from it’s syndication yet loses money from it’s abysmal ratings, it’s renewal makes even LESS sense now, but whatever. Fox is unwatchable at this point other than the NFL and MLB.

  • TheHafk

Bobs Burgers has enough episodes to make it though Fall 2013. And Fox ordered six more scripts in August too. Combine that with premiering .6 higher than it did last season, if it can keep its ratings stabilized around 2.0 then its guaranteed to get another full season next year. Its not going anywhere. I’m so glad I can say that about Bobs Burgers after two seasons on being on the edge

  • Dan S

Fox used to be my favorite network when they had great shows from 24 to X-Files on but those days are gone. I’m not a sports enthusiast & the only animated show I watch is The Simpsons. I don’t care for talent shows & the only new show Fox has that I like is Ben & Kate which will probably meet the bear before too long. The Following looks like the only show on the horizon that shows any promise to deliver a solid hit for Fox.

  • Dan

@Tom I think we all thought that about Touch. That it would premiere on Nov 5 and Mob Doctor would air next week then be pulled or moved to fridays. A lot of commenters believe KN would air Monday but the show works fridays and Touch needs a chance mondays. If of flops then fox still has The Folllowing for midseason
