Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-30, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) final season 0.46
The Mob Doctor  0.58
Ben And Kate :) :) :) :) 0.87
Bones      0.96
The Mindy Project :) :) :) :) 1.00
American Dad already renewed 1.04
Bob's Burgers      1.08
Glee      1.10
New Girl      1.16
Family Guy already renewed 1.37
The Simpsons already renewed 1.58

Fox's The Mob Doctor is still certain to be canceled, however three episodes have now aired, and that's more than 52% of our polled readers expected. But it's only a matter of when it gets yanked from the schedule, not if.

No other Fox show is in danger of cancellation at this point, so I bet our long time readers can guess what will be in the headline next week!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Melanie Baseball starts Oct 15 so Mob doctor has next week. If fox wants to avoid cancellation for mob doctor they can put touch in the slot beginning Nov and move MD to fridays so they can cancel it in November

  • Ultima

When does Fox start airing baseball?

Sunday, 14 October (first Monday game is the following night)

  • Ultima

    @KJ Styles
Fringe was pulling CW numbers at the end of it’s season, so even a 1.5 was about double Fringe’s ratings

Fringe was never pulling “CW numbers.” It’s season low was a 0.9 – outside of The Vampire Diaries, only five episodes of every show combined the entire season on the CW beat that.

  • Bill Gorman

“Well if Fox doesn’t own Fringe and makes nothing from it’s syndication yet loses money from it’s abysmal ratings, it’s renewal makes even LESS sense now,”

It only makes less sense if you didn’t read the site.

Warner Brothers made/kept their fee to Fox low and Fox apparently decided with that low fee a short final season was their best alternative for Friday.

I love the name of the code for the smiley faces for certain to be renewed:

  • Morgan Wick

Part of why so few shows are at risk for cancellation is because Fringe and Mob Doctor are dragging down the average.

  • Nick

I agree with @Morgan Wick. The averages are inflated due to the terrible ratings of Fringe and TMD.
At least Ben & Kate should be on the bubble.

  • Bill Gorman

“Part of why so few shows are at risk for cancellation is because Fringe and Mob Doctor are dragging down the average.”

That’s not at all unusual for both Fox and the CW who air relatively few scripted shows, but it hasn’t caused a problem with our prediction method’s success rate.

And the “problem” of The Mob Doctor dragging down Fox’s overall average will end soon. It’s got probably one more episode before Fox yanks it.

  • NE1

Happy to see “The Mindy Project” doing well. I thought for sure that wouldn’t last, but I like her and I’m sure she made a good show. Will start watching it eventually.

  • John A

If Fringe was losing Fox money they would have axed it. Are people here that stupid? And Alcatraz dropped every single week and ended the season with a terrible 1.5 demo. Really had it been renewed it would be getting Mob Doctor numbers.

Every time I see a lousy Fox show cancelled I always think that they cancelled ‘Lie to Me’ for this crap????

“Every time I see a lousy Fox show cancelled I always think that they cancelled ‘Lie to Me’ for this crap????”

Every time I see a lousy CBS show canceled I always think that they canceled “Gunsmoke” for this crap?????

Fox is in really rough shape, and I think things are only going to get worse for them. They are going to have to make some big changes for mid-season.

For one it may be a good idea to move Idol back to Tuesdays. Their Tuesday nights are dead, and Idol is the only thing that I can think of that will save it. On Wednesdays they could premiere their new comedy The Goodwin Games at 9:30pm following an hour and a half of Idol.

Thursdays they could move Glee to 8pm. And then put New Girl and The Mindy Project at 9 and 9:30.

Raising Hope is the big question. It doesn’t make sense to cancel it, not when it is a season away from a syndicatable number of episodes. They could do a few things with it. For one they could move it to Sundays and air it at 7:30, and put The Cleveland Show on at 7. Or they could move it to Fridays and place it in Fringe’s open slot. At 9:30 they could either show comedy repeats or place The Cleveland show there.

Finally, I guess they should place The Following on Mondays at 9pm eastern.

Is there any chance FOX moves The Mob Doctor to Friday to see if it can keep 1.0+ rating there?!

It didn’t embarrass itself in a repeat broadcast over there and “Masked Scheduler” is buddies with the co-creator. So, yeah, a pretty good one. It’s not remaining on Monday, that’s for sure…

Kevin Reilly just called MOB DOC show runner Josh Berman and said that despite the ratings and any rumors out there, he was “giving his word” that FOX was going to shoot and air all 13 of MOB DOCTOR.

  • Matt

The Mob Doctor is a very good show I think the title killed it.

  • The End

I think Raising Hope will get one final season personally. Then again my reasoning has no basis in reality beyond the fact I love this show, and of course the syndication thing.

That said, interesting the way they use 2 actresses to play Hope in Raising Hope. Totally didn’t see that. I think they’re twin sisters, and I guess it helps with production if one isn’t feeling up to filming the over takes over.

  • Josh

I hope The Mob Doctor manages to get higher ratings… it’s actually a great show. People dismiss it to early just because of the name.

It is getting high ratings in Canada though, so maybe that could be a good factor in keeping it afloat for the rest of its season at least.

@anonymous – you should change your screen name to ‘fox executive’ – LOL

  • Phil

So will Touch take over Mob Doctor’s spot?
