Poll: Will the 'Supernatural' Premiere be Perfect Debate Counterprogramming?

Supernatural returns tonight. The CW has made the interesting choice to premiere it while the big four are airing the first Presidential Debate making it the only broadcast counterprogramming. The last time that happened -- when the CW aired America's Next Top Model opposite the Stand Up to Cancer telethon, the network actually won its time period in the fast nationals. While there is, to put it mildly, a lot more interest in the debate, it's not going to be as tough as competing head-to-head with its usual Wednesday night at 9PM adversary,  Modern Family.

Last season, when it aired Friday's at 9PM, Supernatural premiered to a 0.8 adults 18-49 rating on September 23,2011. The season finale on May 19 got a 0.7 in adults 18-49. So how will the brothers fare tonight?

I’m guessing 0.8-0.9. I’d be satisfied with that. Breaking a 1.0 would be awesome, though, and and anything lower than a 0.7 would be really sad for me.

  • Jamie

For an ordinary Wednesday, I’d expect 0.9-1.0, but with The CW they’ve shown in the past with Hellcats and Top Model that if nothing else is on that The CW will win. So I guess it could reach 1.2.

  • PV

I think it may get a 0.7, 0.8 at best, I will be surprised if it gets 0.9 or something, I know it’s not on friday anymore, but still… I see it holding up the numbers from last season, but I can’t see it increasing.

  • Dan

I have cablevision too so I don’t get CW. Ill stick to the DVR of The Middle and Neighbors

  • RyanCanada

    im excited for Supernatural

  • Justin121

Supernatural has a very devoted fan base. I can only imagine its ratings improving from Friday to Wednesday.

    I voted 1.0.

This could be a comeback year for the CW.

  • Dan S

Maybe it’s the optimist in me but I say 1.0 simply because the other nets are all showing the debate. Most fans of SPN should follow it to Wed & will simply catch Modern Family in reruns later.

I’d be happy to see a 0.8 or 0.9, thrilled to see 1.0, but I’d be unsurprised to see a 0.7 or 0.6. Any lower seems very unlikely, considering the healthy ratings over the summer, especially when it was airing at 8pm.

  • Sid

I think a 0.9 for tonight but it might break the 1.0 mark when Arrow arrives next week.

  • Jared

Supernatural fans are definitely devoted to the show but I can’t see the series adding many more viewers than it already has. I guessed 0.6-0.7

  • Silvio

    1.5 or more.

I do not expect Supernatural to see a big bump from moving to Wednesday. Better timeslot, but also mutch stronger competition = season equal to last one, or up to 10% at most. That is, unless lead-in Arrow turns out to be (for CW standards) megahit.
But timing for Supernatural premiere is perfect, no overlapping with audience interested into presidential debate whatsoever and no significant competition from cable networks. Hit reality Honey Boo Boo season just ended, Royal Pains too. Actually, I think DirecTV’s Rake is only scripted original going against Supernatural today.
So I expect big numbers this week, and perhaps next week (fueled by Arrow premiere), only then back to usual sub 1.0.

  • Adrian

    I expect a 0.7, 0.8 at most.

Let’s be realistic, it’s a 8 year old show. It’s not going to pick up any more viewers even with the move off Fridays. I could see it holding on to 0.7-0.8 like last year, maybe hitting a 0.9 if Arrow turns out to be a super, mega hit, but not more than 1.0

  • Michael

Arrow is going to be massive for the CW. SPN will definitely benefit from it, next week. However, for tonight I predict a 0.8-0.9!

  • Kat

Jeremy Carver taking over as Show Runner will generate some rekindled interest in Supernatural from fans that Sera Gamble drove away. But going into it’s 8th season, I think the ship has sailed for many former SPN fans.

I think SPN will hit 1.0, maybe a little more. Next week it will probably get a boost from Arrow. But I think it’ll continue to be a steady player for The CW. If moving to Friday nights and the disastrous last 2 seasons couldn’t chase away the dedicated core fanbase, nothing will!

  • Dean-W

1.0 Supernatural is a 8 year-old-show with a really solid fanbase. Plus last season it was on Friday with Nikita as a lead-in so, I think, it’ll be up for its premiere and more (1.1-1.2) when Arrow will start !

  • Danimals

Going to be optimistic and voted for 1.0-1.1. But wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up with .7-.9. But anything lower than a .6 would be shocking for me. Next week, it will definitely pass the 1.0 mark.

  • DryedMangoez

Supernatural’s aired against the debates before or even on an Election night if I remember.

Anyway, hope it does well on Wednesdays.

  • HB

    1.0-1.1

  • Tessa

Wow, an article purely about Supernatural. There really isn’t anything on tonight. Or maybe Pedowitz’s kindness towards this show is leaking into other sites so SPN is no longer the baby in the corner.

I voted 1.0-1.1. It scored .7 in the season finale (I don’t get why this site keeps ignoring its own adjustments,) and it was up against genre shows. This time it’s against something that isn’t even in the ballpark of its category. Anyone interested in the debates will watch the debates. The rest have no choice but to watch Supernatural.

    @Justin 121,

“This could be a comeback year for the CW”

Every fall of the last 4 years I’ve read that exact phrase HERE ON THIS WEBSITE…

I believe it’s going to premiere to a 0.8. Let’s keep it real folks.
