For The First Time, Fans Can Officially Cast Their Vote For 2013 Inductees

NEW YORK, Oct. 4, 2012 The nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 are:

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band

Deep Purple

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Albert King

The Marvelettes

The Meters

Randy Newman

Procol Harum

Public Enemy

Donna Summer

“The definition of ‘rock and roll’ means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music,” commented Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is ‘rock and roll’.”

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The 2013 nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1987.

Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry.

For the first time in its history, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will offer fans the opportunity to officially participate in the induction selection process. Beginning Thursday, Oct. 4 and continuing through Wednesday, Dec. 5, the public can visit,, and to cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2013 inductees.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, the nonprofit organization that exists to educate its audiences on the global impact of the rock and roll art form via the museum, as well as its education programs and library and archives.

The 28th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in Los Angeles at the NokiaTheatre L.A. LIVE on Thursday, April 18, 2013. The show will be presented on HBO at a later date.

  • Loving Lost Girl

How can Deep Purple not already be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But Madona is? WTF!!!

  • Rob

Deep Purple I agree, but the biggest ommision is KISS. The Rock and Roll Hall of fame has no legitemacy.

  • Paula

How can the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum induction NOT be held in Cleveland???

  • mc

Joan Jett, Donna Summer, Deep Purple and most definitely Heart deserve to get in this year. But who knows, every year the RRHOF surprises me.

  • Jason

I remember plenty of times that the ceremony was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC. Was it getting too cramped in there?

  • Frank

From that list I’d vote for:

    Deep Purple
    Procol Harum

  • AppleStinx

It really is unbelievable that neither Procol Harum nor Deep Purple is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet.

  • Kevin

KISS is probably the biggest omission but it is also hard for me to believe that Rush isn’t in there already either.

KISS was nominated a couple of years ago.

  • RMH

Deep Purple, Rush, Heart, and Joan Jett should be the inductees. Why is Public Enemy even being considered they’re not rock.

  • JLH

KISS absolutely does not belong there until many, many other more worthy bands and individuals are inducted, many more. KISS’ music is mediocre at best, and never reached the heights that real rock bands attained. KISS has always been a joke: when Spinal Tap is inducted, then I’ll be alright with KISS being inducted.

  • AppleStinx

I don’t know if I should tell a friend about this. He used to be a huge fan of Donna Summer way back when. He was always singing a song of hers that went like this: “chew chew pee pee, chew chew pee pee, bad girls blah blah blah bad girls”. Irritating. Maybe I won’t tell him.

  • Ben

For those who don’t know the opening words to the song Bad Girls by Donna Summer are; “Toot, toot. Beep, Beep.”
Donna Summer was referred to as the ‘Queen of Disco’ in the 1970s and is unlikely to get more votes than 5 other artists who are considered more representative of rock and roll music.

  • Macy Tarnable

Define “Rock and Roll”. We’ll wait……….
Now that you’ve made that mistake, go out and create a musical entity that can hold up to any of the artists nominated or inducted, ever.
Those who can, do. Those that can’t, bitch.
Those that have tried and failed also bitch.

  • Ben

Chuck Berry is rock and roll music.
Elvis was rock and roll music.
The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, all classic example of rock and roll music.
Rock and Roll music is easy to define. Countless people know what rock and roll music is when they hear it. That has been a known fact since the 1950s.
Disco is not and never will be rock and roll music.

  • Karen

I have been a lifetime Heart fan and my husband has been a lifetime Rush fan-sooo glad they have both been nominated. I feel a road trip coming on!

  • Ashley

KISS was a definite snub. You would think their work for the community to help parents to rock would get them in:

  • sarah

Why hasn’t Johnny Mathis been nominated by now. He has a better voice than any of them and has lasted fifty years.
