Shoynna, I do agree that Sharon does need redeeming. Although Y and R was at its WORST under LML. She completely made the show unrecognizable in less than two years which was why they canned her ass. I think the stories currently in place can be quickly resolved/refocused. As long as the vets stay and are on the screen, I’ll pretty much be happy. I just don’t want the overall look of the show to change which MAB was pretty true to.

  • Kayla Rae

No wonder GH didn’t rise in the Women 18-49 category. It is pure zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz to me. Days is so very much better! Go Days!

  • Kayla Rae

I disagree with you about Jennifer, Shoynna. I love Jennifer as a character and think she adds a lot to the show.

    Days just keeps getting better!

  • Sophie

GH is doing alot better than DAYS.In the ratings and the demo18-49. And that is becuz the writing is so good.
Unlike Days where it’s the Sami and EJ hour, and it’s aweful. Days is a snoozefest right now. GH is going to be sooooo good this week!

  • LynTX

At the end of the day, what we like or dislike isn’t the issue – We are watching our soaps. Soaps need to attract new viewers, specifically in the desired demos. And that is what the majority (with the exception of B&B) have been unable to do, yr over yr.

How do you get viewers to want to invest in characters who’ve been around, in some cases, more than 20 yrs? I don’t have the answer and not sure the various showrunners do either.

I choose to enjoy the genre while I can…..

  • Shoynna

Pat, I agree and disagree. LML wrote Y&R with a more “global” feel, but her tenure was easily repaired, no real damage and without characters not having to “lose” their minds to be explained (example Sharon). IMO, LML was not the worst because Y&R could be “fixed” so easily as it was by Josh (when he chose not to join the writer’s strike but write for Y&R instead). Interesting that Josh “fixed” LML’s Y&R and he’s now fixing the aftermath of MAB! But you’re entitled to your OP re: LML and Y&R.

Kayla Rae, you’re entitled to like Jennifer, that’s your feeling, but ultimately the ratings will win out. DOOL will have to improve to stay on air, get those ratings up, so a lot of people had better find Jennifer and Danifer interesting. And soon. DOOL doesn’t need a reboot, it needs a “revival”. I do not like Nicole being tossed into another idiotic SL just to prop up the “fizzle” that is known as Danifer. Jennifer was most interesting with Jack. Whew, I’m glad Chloe is coming back in 2013!

LynTX, it’s hard for people to believe that people “actually” like/enjoy emotional storytelling, but Brad Bell knows they do. Emotional storytelling is Hope being torn between her feelings for Liam and her own personal beliefs (people can relate to this), it’s not one murder after another (Y&R goes CSI) or Nicole’s 100th Baby Drama (sorry, DOOL, Nicole could be ton of fun — but right now she’s just NOT!) I doubt we will ever see the other soaps return to emotional storytelling completely, so B&B will remain unique in that regard indefinitely. B&B concentrates on character, rarely “bending” characters to fit a plot and never to the extent that Y&R has:(Y&R’s bending Sharon beyond the breaking point to fit her current SL is an example of fitting a character to a plot rather than fitting a plot to a character.)

All soaps could be better. They could at least try. What do they have to lose at this point?

  • Kayla Rae

I think it’s fine that Chloe is coming back though I never saw her as one of Days’ better actors. I believe Days will be renewed through 2014 and beyond. Wait and see!

Sophie, your opinions are just that. Days is so much better than GH which I find unwatchable. Can’t stand that Spinelli character…what’s up with that guy??? Hard to believe he’s lasted so long.

Basically, I find GH to be the “Sonny & Carly Hour”…truly a vapid borefest to be sure! Sadly, there is no accounting for taste and that fact is reflected often in the ratings. I’ve said it before: the American tv audience as a whole is nothing to be proud of. Just look at the crap that all too often gets great ratings (especially some of those idiotic reality shows!).

A more discerning, loyal audience tends to be attracted to Days, I have found.

  • Shoynna

The only thing in Days’s favor re: renewal is that the Today show is faltering too, so the 5th hour of Today may be thrown on the scrap heap and that could favor a Days renewal. BTW I’m rooting for a Days renewal :)

  • Kayla Rae

The Days’ execs have stated recently that they wouldn’t get rid of Days as it remains a stalwart for the network. Its production costs are low and it makes money for them. It will remain on the air. They would be fools to let Days go.

  • Shoynna

Sadly a 5th hour of Today would cost even less, but Today is faltering badly — and (recently) Matt Lauer seems to have become more hated than Stefano! If NBC is “wise” enough to give Days a renewal, that’s all the more reason to get those ratings up.

  • Mary Amos

Chrisann D its true over Harry’s Law.I was so mad. They do target the younger demo.My kids say WhyThere working them come home and if its not a night for kids sports they are watching cartoons until the kids go to bed.By then they are lucky to see a hour of Tv.We double dip spend. We buy for are kids and grandkids. We aren’t stuck in the 60’s.I watch all kinds of shows. We watch alot more then the age group they prefer. We are there biggest veiwers. Most of this stuff they wanna sell is paid by parents and grandparents,The younger generation doesn’t sit and go threw all the comercial. They DVR to avoid them. But there the ones they target. The ones who could care less who there sponsers are.but also Nilsen being greedy and refusing to add alot more boxes for the population is killing alot of shows to.

  • TimsDale4ever

lol Ohio girl — yes Y&R is a very drawn out and repetitive show and has been this way since about 1990 when this style of production came aboard and no one since has abandoned it which has ruined this once powerhouse of daytime. It got sooooooooooooooo bad back then that I quit watching for about 20 years because everytime I sampled it you could tell nothing had really changed. Honest to God when I quit watching “Nikki” was on the phone with someone and several episodes later, it showed “Nikki” still in the same outfit STILL talking on the phone. THAT’s when I signed off….

I’m “dreaming” that Miss Phelps has a much different and needed production style that is going to end this draggy type of show once and for all. I don’t really care who’s on the show — just MOVE ALONG ALREADY!

  • John

Haven’t watched Y&R in several years so don’t know first hand what I’m reading about Sharon but have got to say I have never been able to tolerate the actress.

Still overjoyed Chandler Massey aka Will from Days won a daytime Emmy this year as well as the writing team. General Hospital gets by strong because of its crazy fan base plus it has Old Belle black from days inter plus stars from One Life To Live. Y&R is very popular amongst senior citizens which comes after Let’s Make A Deal, Price Is Right, & the local news. Y&R carries that old fashioned traditional soap opera story lines so it’s a winner with oldies lovers. General Hospital is like a movie miniseries with some pretty impressive action sequences that’s almost like watching a movie except the movie is so long it lasts for only an hour 5 days a week. Days is the new kind of normal new age edgy and way ahead of its time when compared to the one track minded core soap watching fans old, middle aged, & unemployed.

Btw who remembers when Nicole & Chloe on days had an alcohol & men party in a hotel room a year or 2 ago. Haha good times.

I too question the Neilson rating system. Recently ABC News and 20-20 did a poll regarding The Best In Televsion(they have a web site with results). They also had a poll regarding best soaps of all time-they are
    1. General Hospital
    2. All My Children
    3. Days Of Our Lives
    4. Young and the Restless
    5. Dark Shadows

So to say that current ratings for Days Of Our Lives are low seem rediculous. Especially when another rating system from TV Guide which rates the most Download or PVR shows also include DOOL at number 3-no other soap is included in the top 5; which makes me wonder why Days is the last rated show on Neilson charts. This system seems flawed at best. There must be another way to get actual numbers, and I hope NBC takes these numbers over Neilson. Days is boring at times, and other times it surprises me. Good job with the Will and Sonny story!! But honestly they do need to get ahead of the game and do something original. All soaps follow the same formula they have repeated storylines only with different characters. DOOL needs something different attitude that will change soap history. NBC listen up and put your heads together. I love DOOL and would hate to see it go. My life would not be the same.

  • TV Gord

cab, you’re pointing to a poll where the only people counted were the ones who voluntarily went to a website and voted over the summer. It’s not a random sampling of people. It’s mostly the more fanatical TV fans (like us), so you don’t get the opinions of the average TV viewers. It’s hardly a scientific sample.

  • Ann

Wow, B&B at least is up quite a bit from last year.

GH’s ratings are down, imo, because of the campiness of the Kate story and the bachelorette party and so on. Plus the fact that Kate and Sonny are not some hugely popular couple. Continuing to force them and her is not doing the show any favors.

I think they’re going to lose some with Jason leaving as well. But Duke is back this week so that may help them.

  • John

Cant say I will miss GH Jason. He sleepwalks through his scenes with little to no emotion.

  • Chrisann

Watched GH today….thought it was one of the best episodes I have watched in the last year. Anyone who saw todays episode…what did you think?
