Renew/Cancel: The Road So Far (Through October 7, 2012)

Categories: Bubble Watch

I'm still not sure what the plans are for "Bubble Watch" but at minimum will publish a weekly table indicating which shows have been renewed and canceled so far.

A few of you have asked me what has surprised me the most this season and so far nothing really has surprised me. But if we make it to this time next week and no shows have been cancelled/pulled off the schedule yet, that will surprise me a bit.

As ever, when it comes to renewals, we're talking about for next season. That shows like Revolution and Go On have received full season pickups for this season is not surprising but is of course great news for fans! But that's not the same thing as being renewed for another season.

For Bubble Watch and R/C fans who like all the "likely" and "certain" designations and miss them below, you can fill them in on your own!  Despite lack of designations,  the list below isn't in alphabetical order and there is actually a rhyme and reason to my sort order below that is pretty easy to figure out.

As usual, shows that haven't aired yet aren't in the list and the list focuses only on scripted shows.

Hiow many seasons has NCIS been running? Just curious?

It’s tricky to call whether GWK will be pulled early.

A 1.6 isn’t good but isn’t completely disasterous either, but its last episode will have been artificially inflated by debate pre-tune. It is gaining on the half-hour despite a weak lead-in.

I think the most sensible decision is for them to cut their losses, decisively pull it, and see if they can keep both Community and Whitney alive. Neither are likely to do any worse than GWK in Fall and are more likely to maintain their ratings towards mid-season. Instead, I think they will waste time and resources in a futile attempt to build GWK and it will be gone by mid-season.

Of course, it’s arguably redundant because all three shows are likely to be gone by mid-season.

ABC should flip flop Last Resort and 666 Park Ave. I think Last Resort might do better at a 10 pm time slot whereas 666 Park Ave might do better earlier.

Putting the male-skewing Last Resort at the end of a female-skewing block against Sunday Night Football won’t help the show.

A better idea is for ABC to swap it with Private Practice, turning ABC Thursday into the Shonda Rhimes night.

Oh forgot to add, Robert S… It would be super nice if you bumped some of those front page links to a “hot bookmark” sort of page when they dropped off. Even now, I find myself wanting to pull up the fall premiere dates, since shows like Burn Notice etc are a ways off yet, plus CW hasn’t even started half their slate yet. (I think the whole reason I came here tonight was to verify my TV guide to see if TVD was going to start this week on CW, and I didn’t even get that done.)

@Varnelius: Good idea, not sure about how best to implement globally, but in the case of the fall premiere dates I added a link on the far right of the secondary site navigation (the gray bar).

Community has yet to air an episode this season, along with most of the CW Lineup. Next week they will be added in. Even though 1 episode isn’t much to use to predict.

NCIS: DC Currently airing it’s 10th Season.
NCIS: LA Currently airing it’s 4th Season.

first let me say it is enjoyable reading all the comments,

Now I have a question. I can see the logic of each network judging what shows to keep or cancel by ranking them against other shows on the same television network.

However, what happens when things go real bad like NBC, using the same methodology will only mean the network will only keep dropping in ratings. It seems NBC ratings are as bad as the Jay Leno show in primetime ratings were, Leno bad primetime ratings better than most of the shows on NBC now.

This from NBC, the network that brought us Must See TV National Broadcasting Company (NBC) which featured such popular shows as The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court, A Different World, Seinfeld, Mad About You, Wings, Frasier, Friends, NewsRadio, and Will & Grace (as well as such drama series as Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and ER)

What does NBC do Now ?

  • simonal

    Grimm certain??
Do you think they forgot Heroes this soon? Virtually no genre shows are worth renewing to a third season for the low license fees to syndicate to (their own) Syfy.

  • simonal

Community – Cancelled. They just don’t know it yet.

@Honey Badger, they do what they did in the early 80s. They find someone who can develop hits. And then you build a show at a time.

  • Lucy

666 could do well on a different time-slot, The premier ratings it got reflect it may just not be that great after Revenge. Cancelled mid-season I reckon.

  • Carl

    @Honey Badger,

What else can they do? Any show they cancel has to be replaced with something else. If they can’t come up with good replacements for the handful of shows they already cancel, what good would canceling more shows do?

That being said, it seems like NBC is showing some signs of life this year. Still a long ways to go but things are looking up.

I believe NBC’s resurgance is somewhat overstated. The biggest driver of their improvement is moving The Voice to Fall. The only other bright spot on their schedule is Revolution and I have my doubts that will last. Go On/TNN are doing no better than UAN/Whitney did last year.

Greenblatt is the luckiest executive alive because he had the good fortune to inherit The Voice from Gaspin at the beginning of his tenure. Otherwise, his tenure has been a damp squib. I’ll give him credit if Revolution sustains good ratings by Spring or if Smash’s ratings hold up when it returns, but I have my doubts.

Easy Renews – Raising Hope, American Dad, Glee, New Girl, Simpsons, Family Guy.
Animal Practice – Will not get a renew, and is doubtful for a full order.
    Easy Renews – Grimm

Drama makes sense for ABC Thursday at 8 p.m. Fox has reality. CBS and NBC have comedy. ABC just needs to find the right drama.

  • erwan from france

I’m sure that FOX will keep Bones for one more season, the show deserves it !

  • NJ Viewer

Vegas is now in it’s 3rd week. I like it. Which means it’s probably gonna get canceled, because most of the shows I like get canned.

  • a p garcia

I am srprised at FOX, TMD has not recieved an “official” cancellation notice.
