'Community' and 'Whitney' Friday Premieres Delayed; Will They Come Off the Bench for 'Animal Practice' and 'Guys with Kids'?

The Friday debuts of Community and Whitney are on hold indefinitely.  Both were originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, October 19. No decision yet on when they will air, or on what night but I wouldn't bet on having to wait too long after the ratings for this Wednesday's Animal Practice and Guys with Kids or Thursday's ratings for Up All Night and 30 Rock  come out to learn when Community and Whitney will air...

A statement from NBC makes it sound like the decision is about focusing their promotional efforts where it will make the most difference. It's hard for me to buy that's really the case. If a show like Animal Practice couldn't thrive after months of promotion including tons of promotion during the Olympics, I can't see how focusing more promotion on it makes sense. Here's the statement from NBC:

“Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 — we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold Community and Whitney from their previously announced premieres of October 19th. Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week — plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights. When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks, we will announce new season premieres of Whitney and Community.”

WHAT?? I already took off of work for Community on Friday Nights….O well still good for a chance of getting renewed

  • SVU: Fringe Division

Community will get Wed, GWK will get Fri with Whit. And maybe 1600 Penn premiers in Nov after the elections?

  • bluelp85

Hopefully Community comes sooner than later. Whitney however there’s no rush.

  • Baqinardo

NBC should pair single camera with single camera and multi with multi.
Moves Whitney to Wednesday and Animal Practice to Friday.
Both Community and AP will die anyway.

  • Nazel

    Aghhhh I want Whitney now!

  • Sammie

    What NBC SHOULD do:

Move Community to top off Thursday nights (where it was before), then Parks & Rec, the Office, Animal Practice (give it an actual lead-in rather than putting it a the top of the night to fend for itself).

Move Guys with Kids to sit with Whitney on Friday, see how that pans out.

Dump the rest of the 30 Rock / Up All Night episodes on Wednesday to burn them off knowing those shows will be over/cancelled at the end of the season.

Who knows what they will do.

  • Baqinardo

By die, i meant Community already gonna hit syndication #s by the end of the season. And also ABC gonna air multi camera comedies on Friday too.

  • Joe

Sammie, how would that move help anything? Wednesday ratings would be as bad as they are now (maybe worse), I highly doubt Community would perform much better than 30 Rock at 8, and you’d be killing a decent-rated P&R to help an already-failed freshman series. Of course, this is NBC so watch exactly that happen.

    Not surprised.

  • iggy

    ABC’s turn.

  • Mark

    8pm – Whitney
    8:30pm – Guys with Kids

8pm – 30 Rock (let it die with class)
    8:30pm – Community

    8pm – Up All Night
    8:30pm – Animal Practice

  • J.G.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up being the new comedy lineup come November:

    9pm: Go On
    9:30pm: Community

    8:00pm: Whitney
    8:30pm: Guys with Kids

    8:00pm: The Office
    8:30pm: Up All Night
    9:00pm: Parks and Recreation
    9:30pm: The New Normal

    8:00pm: 30 Rock
    8:30pm: Go On encores

My guess… Whitney replaces Animal Practice, Wednesday 8:00pm; Community replaces Up All Night, Thursday 8:30pm.

I would just rush them out next week, with encore presentations during the orignally scheduled premiere night (so they can promo the new night to people expecting the shows to be there).

I think they’ll wait a week though, so they can advertise the new start dates during their comedy blocks (there are debates this Thursday and next Tuesday).

ABC still has to get Apt 23 and HE away from two other comedy blocks, what makes you think they’ll move their new TGIF experiment?

  • Mark

While anything’s possible, I still don’t see NBC taking Community and Whitney off Friday nights because they’ll probably do worse than the shows that they’d be replacing, and I’m a little surprised that this site’s fanning the flames. IF they move, there’s no way Community goes back to Thursdays.

I actually found GWK to be pretty funny. It also built to a 1.6 this week from the 1.3 from AP while that awful Neighbors was only a 1.9 losing 15% of the Middle lead-in. Not to mention GWK’s 1.6 was better than the bad 1.4 for both 30 Rock and Up All Night.

I actually think New Normal and Guys with Kids might be a good pair and put Community after a more compatible Go On.

If I were NBC, I’d put Community at 9:30 Tue, move New Normal to pair with GWK. Whitney would be the bench show for mid-season.

  • senor chang

    Easy solution:

    Whitney/GWK on Wednesdays
    Animal Practice/UAN/Office/Parks on Thursdays
    30 Rock/Community on Fridays

  • Justin121

Wednesday: Whitney – Guys with Kids

Thursday: Community – Animal Practice – Office – Parks

(After 30 Rock and Up All night wrap up).

6 single cams: Office & 30 Rock are ending.

4 single cams: Up All Night and Animal Practice are in some danger.

2 single cams: Community and P&R are certain renewals.

2 multi cams: Whitney and Guys With Kids are certai renewals.

The Thursday @ 8:30 goes to Up All Night or Animal Practice, depending on their ratings the rest of the Fall.

    9:30pm: Community

    8:00pm: The Office
    9:00pm: Parks and Recreation
    9:30pm: The New Normal

Why would they move three of their top five sitcoms instead of just replacing the failing ones?

Why would they put The Office up against The Big Bang Theory?

Why would they replace one of the few freshman comedies that is actually working with a fourth year one likely in its final season?

  • Sammie

@Joe, you’re absolutely right, the ratings on Wednesday would be awful but as far as I see it NBC has spread its comedies too thin, I’d put them on Wednesday just to burn them off.

You’re right about P&R, I forgot it was on after The Office, since there’s a pretty good chance P&R will be the only returning Thursday show it should be kept after The Office to keep it’s ratings up.

I do, however, think that Community would perform better than 30 Rock in the 8pm slot.

@JG – I’d be surprised if they messed with The Voice/Go On/The New Normal combination, especially before midseason. There’d be some logic to a shakeup at midseason though since we all expect several of the comedies to disappear by then.
