With only a 13 episode order for this season, and the lowest ratings of all ABC dramas so far, the writing is on the wall for Private Practice. Even though it hasn't been announced as its final season, it's more likely to be canceled than renewed.

666 Park Avenue's results in its second episode drop it into the "certain to be canceled" range, while Last Resort will stay in the "likely to be canceled" category, for now. The non surprising drop in The Neighbors second episode ratings has it down to "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Unclear how long it will stay there.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Scandal was a tenth higher than Castle both of the first two weeks.

The Neighbors *average* is high because of week 1 after Modern Family, its rating in week 2 equalled that of Castle and Last Resort.

  • Sarah

ABC just needs to announce the cancellation of Private Practice already. At least with Kate Walsh leaving after 13 episodes we know things will be wrapped up for Addison.

  • Dan

@Bill – Even though Castle is ABC’s lowest rated show, you have to look at the other ABC dramas. Grey’s is doing good for a show in its 9th season but the show is getting old. The other dramas are low rated too, Scandal, Private Practice aren’t likely to make it to 2013-2014 and who knows if BOP will do well when it returns. Last Resort and 666 are busts and Revenge and OUAT are doing good but their numbers are down. Translation: Castle will survive on Mondays as long as ABC doesn’t have any successful dramas. 2 more seasons at least is likely.

  • Dan

Correction: I meant 3rd lowest rated show. And I wish ABC would announce that its Private Practice’s final season. Its not CBS where they don’t announce anything final but even when they cut Medium’s episode order they announced it was the end. Please ABC just announce PP’s end and PP’s creators please wrap up the series.

I think Castle is more likely to come back than not. It performs relatively well, and I am sure ABC would like to up its episode count for syndication. Even if they move its time-slot I still think it will be back.

It is a shame about 666 Park Ave and Last Resort. I really like both of those shows.

  • Denise

The move to Tuesdays really hurt Private Practice. Also, last season was ridiculous with the long lost kid storyline. They turned it into a daytime soap. Then they kept the annoying kid to futher turn viewers away. Fans tweeted their displeasure with it but they didn’t care so now the show’s got the worst drama ratings. Enough said.

  • juank

Castle will be fine…..with private practice without addison…..for me is the final season….period

  • Potato

@Denise– I don’t watch the show but given how they make TV, its more than likely they just didn’t get viewer opinions by the time they could do anything about it. The episodes were probably already filmed.

  • Ian

Damn it ABC move Last Resort out of that time slot it’s a great show it was just put in an awful time slot.

  • tv#1

For mid-season ABC may or should move Private Practice to Thursdays at 8pm eastern. If their new drama Mistresses is ready to go it may be a good fit for Sundays at 10.

Tuesday nights at 10 would be a good fit for both of their new dramas Zero Hour and Red Widow. I would hold Red Widow off until the spring when DWTS returns, and premiere Zero Hour in January.

How to Live with your Parents (for the rest of your life) would be a good fit for Wednesdays at 8:30 following The Middle.

  • Liam

I agree with a lot of you. Castle wil be fine. But the ratings are lower then last year and its doing just as well as Body of Proof did last Sept to Nov, so I think season 5 will have 22 episodes and then possibly a shortened 13 episode season 6 (possibly the final season).

  • Jan

I can live without Private Practice, but Last Resort and Scandal are another matter. Sure seems early to be getting into all this. :(

  • CrimTV

Hate seeing 666 with one smiley :( This time a few weeks back I was expecting it to do high 2′s and low 3′s!

  • CrimTV

ABC’s new shows are no where near as successful as last season!

  • Fake Me Out

    IMHO

Castle is an aging show with increasing costs and declining ratings. It should have over 100 eps in the can at the end of the season which is more than enough for the syndication runs to last a few years at least. At this point the major factor, IMO, on a renewal next May is if the ABC number crunchers can show how a 6th season will make a quick return on investment. Western corporations tend to be myopic and if they aren’t in the black next quarter they’re not interested … never mind that in a few years all revenue is almost pure profit … what’s it doing for the bottom line (and therefore my bonuses) next quarter.

Whatever happens, I hope ABC gives it, and all their non-renewed shows, enough advance notice to be able to craft proper endings.

    ymmv

  • Carmen

Shonda sacrificed Private Practice for Scandal. Scandal is not bringing in decent ratings. That was a mistake. By the next season both these shows will be canceled.

  • Lucky Lisa

The cancellation bear is chasing both Scandal and Private Practice. Here’s to hoping the bear catches Scandal first!

  • Skylar

How many shoes does ABC have left to premiere this season?

  • Barbie

Carmen, I completely agree with you. Sacrificing Private Practice for Scandal was a low, bad move. The thing is, the woman is completely racist. Mind you, she has the fixation with black protagonists, and she just *had* to have them. Audra McDonald wanted out of PP, and she couldn’t have it. Now she sacrificed a whole show because of it. Mind you, the color of skin of a character matters nothing to me, but, really, Shonda messed up right there. She would have done much better waiting a few years, pushing out her arrogance thinking everything she creates is amazing, and she might have had a shot. Now she’ll have two shows in the trashcan, when she could have had two shows still in the air.

Lisa, I’m SO with you. I wish so hard ABC would pull a CBS (think CSI:NY), and surprise everyone by keeping Private Practice without Addison this year! I think the show has amazing potential, I think Kadee and Caterina have stolen the show for two years, and hey, they could totally run it. Also, Amy Brenneman, such a force.

And Castle? Pffft, no way it’s going out.

  • Randy

ABC would be really stupid if they did NOT cancel the Neighbors.
