Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 7, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Private Practice   0.65
666 Park Avenue  0.71
Castle :| :| :| 0.74
Last Resort   0.76
Scandal :| :| :| 0.76
The Middle :) :) :) :) 0.95
The Neighbors :| :| :| 0.95
Revenge      1.08
Once Upon A Time      1.36
Grey's Anatomy      1.52
Modern Family      2.04

With only a 13 episode order for this season, and the lowest ratings of all ABC dramas so far, the writing is on the wall for Private Practice. Even though it hasn't been announced as its final season, it's more likely to be canceled than renewed.

666 Park Avenue's results in its second episode drop it into the "certain to be canceled" range, while Last Resort will stay in the "likely to be canceled" category, for now. The non surprising drop in The Neighbors second episode ratings has it down to "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Unclear how long it will stay there.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Cancel Neighbors, and put Last Man Standing it’s spot. That show should get a little help from Modern Family, and Middle because it got a raw deal last year. The show after it last year stunk really bad twice. It’s not it’s fault because the other shows were awful of it. Now as a punishment (sort of) it’s going to Friday. That’s ridiculous. Neighbors should go to Friday.

I knew this was going to happen.

Maybe it wouldn’t have made that much of a difference, but I still think 666PA would have had a somewhat better shot of catching on if ABC had scheduled it at 9pm with OUAT as its lead-in, then maybe closed out the night with Revenge at 10. A much cleaner transition…

    The night could have gone:
    OUAT (fantasy) / 666PA (fantasy-soap) / Revenge (soap)

    Instead, we got:

    OUAT (fantasy) / Revenge (soap) / 666PA (fantasy-soap)

…creating the perfect storm for 666PA to fall by the wayside.

Also, Last Resort *NEVER* should have been put at 8pm on Thursdays in the first place. For one thing, ABC hasn’t had a single successful drama there since Ugly Betty. For another, Last Resort is heavily action-based/serialized, and 8pm Thursdays simply hasn’t been kind to that type of show in the past. An action-adventure genre show needs a later (9pm or 10pm) time slot to be compatible with the live audience.

ABC should have either scheduled Last Resort at 10pm on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday — or else held it over until midseason. ABC should have put either cheap reality (Wipeout, Shark Tank?) at Thursdays at 8pm, or given that time slot to a lighter comedy-drama or a pair of sitcoms.

Last Resort could have gone in Castle’s slot, shifting Castle over to Sunday or Thursday. Or, it could have gotten the Tuesday slot given to Private Practice, and ABC could have held Private Practice until January. Or, it could have gotten the Wednesday slot given to Nashville, and ABC could have paired Revenge and Nashville together on a different night. Any of these scenarios could have freed up 666 Park Avenue to have OUAT as its immediate lead-in, and at least given it a shot at being sampled by a larger supernatural-friendly audience.

How many viewers of Revenge are predisposed to stick around for a sci-fi/fantasy genre show finishing up the night?

Once again, let’s play…The Elimination Game:

The rules (for those who need to know or maybe just forgot): Each show on the networks* (only the ones that have already series-premiered, or will be definitely returning later in the fall**) will be listed with 25 points each in the R/C Index threads.*** Give points to your favorite shows, take away from your un-favorites. Points will be given as follows: +3, +2, +1, -1, -2, and -3. (You must make each one or your vote is invalid.) When a show reaches 0 points, it is eliminated. If a show reaches 100 points, it will be “locked” and set aside in the Victor’s Village, until there is only one non-victor show left, and these will be reset to 10 points for the Winners’ Circle and final votes. Once you make a vote, wait at least 24 hours before making your next one.

And, if cheating is detected(which is rare, but usually pretty obvious), the suspect “votes” will be disqualified and the totals reset to the most recent valid vote (even if the cheater(s) managed to eliminate a show.) No exceptions! Remember, this is just for fun, to show which shows are our favorites. Don’t ruin it!

    * Not the CW.
** Since Nashville premieres tomorrow, it will be an exception to the “series premiere” rule. Malibu Country will not be included since it premieres in November, however LMS, HE, and Apt. 23 (as returning series) will be included.
*** When each new thread is posted, at least one full page of comments should be already posted before the game is continued.

    Ready? Let’s go:

    666 PARK AVENUE – 25
    APARTMENT 23 – 25
    CASTLE – 27 (+2)
    LAST RESORT – 28 (+3)
    HAPPY ENDINGS – 23 (-2)
    SCANDAL – 25
    THE MIDDLE – 26 (+1)
    REVENGE – 22 (-3)
    NASHVILLE – 25
    GREY’S ANATOMY – 24 (-1)

From Castle 5.03 “Secret’s Safe With Me” –
Castle: You owe me big time.
Beckett: I don’t know if the department can reimburse you for all of this.
Castle: That’s not the kind of owing I’m talking about.

  • CCB

@theothertony I agree with you, moving Castle to thursdays after Grey’s Anamoty can boost the demo because DWTS is not helping, and perhaps put Scandal on tuesdays, because I don’t think PP will survive without Addison

  • Ricky

Oh good, nobody’s voted yet. I forgot to add Suburgatory!

Here’s the totals with that show added in:

    666 PARK AVENUE – 25
    APARTMENT 23 – 25
    CASTLE – 27
    LAST RESORT – 28
    SCANDAL – 25
    THE MIDDLE – 26
    REVENGE – 22
    NASHVILLE – 25

  • Bob

Wow. I always start with CBS and see all those beautiful green fives….ABC is my second favorite network and was sad to see such a small amount of green fives…..Now I get to go to NBC…lol. The worst network on TV….Can you imagine NBC without the Voice???? lol.

  • Dan

Castle is safe. While its aging, if ABC cant find hits, they will keep what they have and airing a new series in the Monday 10pm time slot would make matters worse. (That slot was cursed in the past, remember What About Brian and October Road)

Neighbors will get a full season but we’ll likely have a “Better With You” situation. It will probably be done after 22 episodes.

Last Resort will likely last as long as Charlie’s Angles. I do expect it to be pulled but probably not for a while. Maybe they will replace it with BOP but who knows. 666 Park Avenue will likely get additional episodes as a bridge like Pan Am, The Forgotten & Detroit 187 until a midseason show can replace it. I dont think ABC would yank 2 dramas and ordering more episodes delays the “cancellation announcement” until May. Hopefully Nashville is a hit because its ABC’s last fall hope.

  • Dan

@CCB – Moving Castle to Thursdays is a bad idea. Its better to keep the show on Mondays at 10 airing against the venerable Hawaii 5-0 and Revolution. Its the only drama ABC has that can hold up in the slot.

  • Valerie

Honestly i hope this is last season of PP. Both Adelstein and Strickland(those in photos) deserve better than this crap of a show.

  • Doris

Private Practice could have survived if Shonda land wanted it to. With PP out of the way Scandal has a better shot of renewal That’s why Shonda wanted it on after Greys Anatomy and moved PP. Fans hit the nail on the head when they said Shonda is sacrificing PP for Scandal. I will not watch Scandal for this reason.

  • Dorothy

I really hope Last Resort sticks around and gets more viewers! Its the best new show on TV by a huge mile! All the actors are doing a superb job and the story is being developed really well! I’d hate for it to be cancelled!!

  • Mike

if last resort stabalizes at a 1.8-2.0 will it have a better chance of renewal

  • Tony JJ

ABC needs to find an Ugly Betty type show for Thursdays at 8 pm. a Comedy-Drama with a female lead that is serialized, but not the heavily serialized soap that is Revenge. While I would love Last Resort to last on Thursdays at 8 it needs to be moved to Tuesdays at 10pm or even Sundays at 10pm. Mistresses could be the perfect comedic drama that they need there, if it’s any good, or it will just end up like another ‘Missing’.

Private Practice needs to be announced as the final season, I don’t get what ABC or Shonda is waiting for.

  • Dan

@Doris – Shonda didn’t decide that ABC did and they barely renewed Private Practice but I guess they felt that they could use it for fridays (I would have personally kept Body of Proof at 10 Tuesdays and returned Private Practice at Midseason. Its an older show and this is obviously its final season. Why ABC hasn’t announced it is unknown but hopefully the show can wrap itself up nicely. Scandal may have a future but they way its retaining Grey’s Anatomy is not good.

  • Dan

@Tony JJ – Who knows, for some reason ABC doesnt want to officially cancel it but if it was barely renewed for a sixth season, why would they make us think that the show has a chance for another season. ABC within the next 2 weeks should announce the ending of the series like how they ended Boston Legal, how CW is ending Gossip Girl and how ABC should have ended Brothers and Sisters had they renewed it for a sixth year.

  • Tim

So how is a DWTS 16th season looking? If they cancel it, will ABC have to pick up more shows for the spring or do they have enough?

That would be 3 hours to fill…

  • chimpo

Bill could you explain why Castle, with similar index like H5O, is a toss up and H5O is a certain renewal? I just don’t understand this difference.

  • Sid

I think it’s because Castle already has enough episodes that are in syndication so ABC can decide to cancel it if they want to come May where as Five-0 has been sold but it’s only in its third season.

But I really wouldn’t worry about Castle, at least not for this season.

  • chimpo

I’m not worried about Castle. Just didn’t know what the difference was between those two cases. Sometimes it’s hard to understand all this ratings logic that is going on.

  • Ultima

How many shows does ABC have left to premiere this season?

Fall – Nashville, Suburgatory, Happy Endings, B- in 23, Last Man Standing, Malibu Country

Midseason (scripted) – Body of Proof, Red Widow, Zero Hour, How to Live With Your Parents, Family Tools and maybe Mistresses

Midseason (unscripted) – Bachelor, Wife Swap, Primetime Nightline
