With only a 13 episode order for this season, and the lowest ratings of all ABC dramas so far, the writing is on the wall for Private Practice. Even though it hasn't been announced as its final season, it's more likely to be canceled than renewed.

666 Park Avenue's results in its second episode drop it into the "certain to be canceled" range, while Last Resort will stay in the "likely to be canceled" category, for now. The non surprising drop in The Neighbors second episode ratings has it down to "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Unclear how long it will stay there.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Tim
    So how is a DWTS 16th season looking? If they cancel it, will ABC have to pick up more shows for the spring or do they have enough?

    There’s absolutely no chance that ABC pulls DWTS off of their spring schedule.

  • Ultima

    @Ricky

    FFS, can’t you at least wait until Wednesday before you crap up the Renew/Cancel threads with that crap?

  • Brian

    Glad to see OUAT and Revenge have their 5 smilies. I hope that Last Resort doesn’t get cancelled because its another awesome show.

  • Sid

    @chimpo

    I honestly believe that’s the case. With Five-0 only in its third season and already sold, it’s pretty much guaranteed that CBS carries the show until it has enough episodes.

    Castle already has enough so it’s up to ABC to decide what they want to do with the show.

    It’s different I guess because it’s two different networks, two different studios and a lot of other things that aren’t made public for us to decide the decision making behind each shows fate.

    It’s pretty much all speculation from our point of view.

  • Don

    666 deserves to be cancelled. Too many sex shows on TV already.
    I hope Chicago Fire is next.

    Ricky, let’s keep “The Elimination Game” out of the Renew/Cancel Index post comments this season.

    Here is a post I created for you to lead “The Elimination Game” on an ongoing basis, feel free to put one comment per week in each Renew/Cancel thread directing people to this post in which to play.

    While I wish Castle was doing a little bit better, I really think it’s safe for at least one more season. It’s owned by ABC Studios, it just started airing in syndication on TNT, and while it will finish this season with over 100 episodes, its audience has remained fairly consistent, even when accounting for the annual dip when airing after the Bachelor. I have a hard time believing that ABC can’t find a way to make money off the show’s first-run episodes while they continue to accumulate episodes to sell off-network.

    Of course if they really aren’t happy with Castle pulling low 2’s in the demo behind DWTS could move it to Friday or something, but then again, why? To give a new show the DWTS lead-in? In case anyone hasn’t noticed, the DWTS lead-in would be worth jack to a new show. It just skews so. Freaking. Old. Conveniently, so does Castle, and given the dip Hawaii Five-O has taken, there’s a chance ABC could be winning the 10 PM Monday slot regularly come Spring (call me crazy, but I don’t think a retooled Smash will pull Revolution-type numbers). That will give them plenty of opportunities to send out those nice flowery press releases that they love so much while Castle continues to make them money on the back end.

    This is Private Practice’s final season. ABC and Shonda Rhimes, have the decency to admit it. You are not fooling anyone here.

    While Last Resort probably won’t get a second season with its current numbers, I do think ABC will let it air all 13 episodes they ordered. Depending on how the rest of the fall goes, there’s a chance it might even pick up a handful of additional episodes before the end, a la Detroit 1-8-7 two years ago.

    Sucks for PP fans and LR is just behind PP. People need to start watching Last Resort. It’s entertaining and a quality show just like the recently cancelled ABC TV show, Missing. But a bunch of people rather see crappy/uninterested shows like X-Factor and 2 and a Half Men. This week Last Resort is also going to be competing with the return of The Vampire Diaries another great show.

  • Ricky

    @Bill: Thank you.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

    “@Bill: Thank you.”

    Sure thing, go for it!

  • were123

    @Bill
    Castle the 3rd lowest rated scripted show? I was pretty sure that was Scandal! Anyway, Castle is low, but at least is above 2s, that might cut it some slack to return, even if it’s on a final season note

  • Dan

    @were123 – Castle is not on its final season. I’m not sure if this is an actual factor but less hits from ABC means they will keep more veterans around. I’d be very shocked it Castle got cancelled in May, especially when ABC has almost no dramas.

  • Mari

    Castle is safe.

    Scandal averaging a 2.05 after 2 weeks, Castle at a 2.0.

    PP was a good show about 2 years ago, time to put it to sleep.

  • Bookworm

    I’m just coming to say that I believe that this is Private Practice final season. Kate is already confirmed to be leaving and I feel that ABC won’t bet the show on the supporting characters, especially when the show is not doing too good with the leading. I believe PP is at syndication so that is good news and a reason to let it end on a good note.

    The rumors of its renewal came with the idea that this would be the final season. ABC never confirmed but a lot of different sites reported it.

  • Dan

    @Bill – I may be a retentionista but Castle holds on to almost all of its DWTS lead in while Scandal squanders its big Grey’s lead in. That’s the difference.

  • Dan

    @Bookworm – Its the final season. 13 episodes, Kate Walsh leaving and the show getting barely renewed in May makes it all but certain that this is the end. The show had a good run (comparable to Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210) along with Grey’s but when its the end, its time to announce it. Maybe ABC will do so in a few weeks. I can’t see them ordering more episodes even if ABC’s new shows do flop.

    Last Resort has some of the best acting and plots on television today. Deserves a more appropriate time slot. Perhaps Sunday at 10:00.
    Like Pan Am before it, I enjoy the very well produced 666 Park Ave, but it simply doesn’t appeal to enough viewers.
    I predict the heavily promoted Nashville will succeed and eventually swap slots with Revenge.
