The adults 18-49 ratings for NBC scripted rookie darling Revolution keep falling week to week [4.2, 3.4, 3.2, 3.0] which causes some of our commenters to predict its demise. However, because NBC's scripted ratings are otherwise so completely woeful (only 2 other shows broke a 2.0 rating last week, and one is in its final season), Revolution ratings can still fall a very long way before it's in danger of becoming a meal for the Cancellation Bear.

How low? If the season stopped today, NBC would certainly be renewing scripted shows averaging a 1.7 rating, and maybe a 1.6. Will Revolution ratings fall that far? Never say never.

And for commenters who'll cry foul at Revolution's "retention", don't bring that Retentionista nonsense around here.

Up All Night and Animal Practice ratings aren't falling every week, but are already so low as to make them both likely to be canceled.

Where's the bear? He's not just in the NBC post this season, he's moving around!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    It seems revolution’s ratings are actually stablized, if it continues to be around 8million, so why do people say it’s falling?

    “It seems revolution’s ratings are actually stablized, if it continues to be around 8million, so why do people say it’s falling?”

    Because, as the post makes clear, Revolution ratings have fallen each week.

  • alexjones

    @aeiouy

    Revolution is a hit only compared to the other new shows this year, and maybe by NBC standards. There is a lot of the season to go though and plenty of time to revolution to drop to cancellable levels, the ratings have yet to stablise and there is no way of knowing where they will level out.

    I want to like Revolution , BUT , the writing is lacking, and so is the acting. I have significant issues with the very world that is Revolution , but the main characters are so badly acted, and written that it nearly drives me crazy !
    ++
    Take Danny Matheson played by Graham Rogers, he plays his character as if he is retarded , and lacking any higher judgement ability. Is this because he had nearly no screen experience before this project?
    Then you have Charlie Matheson, who in this dangerous world holds back critical information , REALLY !!
    ++
    It is friggen TerraNova again where the kids do rash crazy things that in the end in danger the people that are trying to protect them in a world they know is highly dangerous.
    ++
    Because of the bad writing, I expect to see the series lose .1 – .2 every week until it hits some were in the low to mid 2′s, and don’t be surprised to see it reach 1.9.

    Revolution is a great show. I think you have to be crazy not to like it with all the other horrible shows on.

  • jamandas

    I have enjoyed Revolution was not happy about who they killed off this week. I liked her story line and wanted her to find her kids. Still can’t stand the main character Charlie though need to tweek her character holding up hope that it will pick up a little more to hold my attention all season.

    hopefully fixed to be easier to follow

    How long are the breaks between the cycles of The Voice and will NBC put Revolution on a break too? It will be interesting to see how well it would do without The Voice lead in.

    I think Revolution is a pile of crap, I really do but the numbers are pretty amazing. Not just for NBC but its beating every ten pm show by an absolute mile on all the nets so those who keep saying it’s going to be gone by the end of the year I don’t see how they are making that assumption.

    I think it would have started to drop way more than it has by now if that were going to happen. it’s held up very well.

  • Sheila McCarthy

    Parenthood is the best NBC has on. Therefore it will probably be cancelled. The cast is terrific especially Peter Krause and Lauren graham.

  • Riff Rafferty

    Is there any way that NBC can get replacements for all the bad shows that need to be canceled?

    Well, they only ordered a hundred midseason replacements, so…. no.

  • The End

    @leo
    @@too many haters just for the sake of hate.

    Where are these haters you speak of? You can’t possibly mean the people with a different opinion to you, with differing tastes in TV programming right? Surely not?

    @normal people love revolution,

    Utter nonsense.

  • Colin

    I have a question: You say that CBS´s Hawaii and Blue Bloods are certain to be renewed because of the syndiation thing. Why isnt it the same for Parenthood which would get 88 episodes with a full next season?

  • Felkin

    Watching Revolution takes me back to Flashforward. Great idea, promising start – then poor cast, horrendous writing and drowned out focus of series.

    The writers are setting up a bad Rorschach test. Instead of offering the viewer a chance to observe the characters evolve, or just guess where a character is heading, the writers have to put in “A crazy man with a pack of dogs”, so that we can be told someone is noble, someone will save the day.

    Or we get a freak storm, so we can isolate 2 characters so we again can be told who is compassionate and who is villain.

    What I actually think works so far, is most of the flashbacks. How MM and Monroe started. The english lady and loss of her children. – Why mom went off suddenly? Not so much.

    Show has to cut the dead weight, trim the episodes.

    Too many characters, all needing a scene or more each episode – CUT

    Too many simultaneous trails being advanced; Power out why? Rescue Brother, Nate the militia/Rescuer, MM and Monroe, Farm-lady with Computer who knows her assailant and so on and on – CUT

    Establish a character, then let the primary plot build on them – not throw in random flash-backs, or “UPS, did I say that – oh well, this is how is really is then” to explain things – CUT

    When you have 2 main parties moving toward same spot (kidnapped brother, rescuers), have a “timer” in each episode that brings them closer – other then one party suddenly ambush a random militia and be told, “Oh, you are just a day behind” (lame opening of an episode) – CUT

    Summation: This show needs to tighten up dramatically, or it joins Flash Forward on the shelf of, “Canned Bear Food”.

  • Ryan

    I’m really liking Revolution. The ratings, I think, are like this due to Monday Night Football and the MLB playoffs (even though both are on cable). Maybe a ratings boost can help if they put in an earlier time slot, like 9pm.

    It was said that “Lost”‘s ratings dropped in their 3rd season, since they moved to 10pm from 9pm, since a good portion of their viewers were of a younger audience.

  • ken

    “The amount of vitriol directed at every science fiction show on the air boggles the imagination. They can’t all be Lost, guys: deal with it.”

    Actually, Revolution is basically Lost 2.0 and every bit as dreadful as Lost.

  • omar

    Go On &the big bang ,new girl are the funnest shows now
    go on go on

  • were123

    I know it’s unlikely that Up all Night get above 1.4, but if it got up to 1.5, would it become a toss up? Or does it have to hit a 1.6 for that sake? Just out of curiosity (and a little bit of hope) ;)
