Can an 'Arrow' Save the CW? (Poll)

Updated: It looks like the dreamers were right! Arrow earned a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating (original posted as a 1.1, apologies!) for its debut episode, which is downright amazing by today's CW standards (but still not up to that lofty Smallville level!)

Many commenters have been looking at The CW's disappointing premiere numbers, and saying something akin to "But Arrow is premiering Wednesday! It's going to be huge! Don't count the CW out yet!" Could they be on to something?

Arrow has been the recipient of some fairly positive buzz from early screenings which may pique the interest from the genre crowd. Superheroes are also very popular at the moment (at least at the box office), and The CW has had success in the past with the DC Universe (Smallville's last season premiered and ended with a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, which is huge by today's standards).

So can an Arrow turn the CW ship around? Let us know how you think the show will premiere tonight, tell us why in the comments!

  • Hugh

Lets hope for a 1.0. If its worse the CW may be gone soon.

  • John A

Not too many coming here to say it was great lol.

  • Nick

The 2.43% who say <0.3 are just haters. Plain and simple.

  • Brian

CW ordering a spinoff of Fringe is not that crazy lol.. They should go the Netflix route and attract an established loyal audience. Doing something with Jericho or maybe Heroes.

Heroes would fit in with CW’s marketing demo and they could just play up some drama relationships in the show and it would be a match made in TV (and ratings) heaven as I am sure it would pull 1.0+ weekly for them.

Wow! My husband & I really enjoyed Arrow tonight! It was a really good show. Hope it does well. We are really looking forward to the next episode!

Since most people don’t know that the CW exists… I’ll dare to dream.

  • wingsabre

It’s a good replacement for the void left by Smallville. One show can do it, but those shows tend to be dumbed down stuff for general consumption. Shows like American Idol, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, etc… If good Arrow can bring on an audience similar to Heroes or Lost. It’ll start out big and fade after time. For now it looks like the network is a good place for niche audiences.

I thought it was pretty good, came off much better than expected. =) good to see the CW go a little more Dark than their usual flare.

  • iknowgoodshows

not revoltingly bad like most cw shows…this nikita, tvd are watchable

  • Keyser

I think Arrow would have been better by just doing a direct spinoff from Smallville with Justin Hartley playing the part again. Kind of hard to get into this new show.

  • ABC hater

But wouldn’t be surprised if it gets a 1.0+ for the premiere.

  • ZmaX

@Keyser, it would have been harder to get new people to get into Arrow if it was a Smallville spin-off since Oliver’s storyline had been going for such a long time.
It would have only gotten the attention a portion of Smallville fans who would have been interested in GA.
Also, for new producers to deal with all the established continuity changes of Smallville would have been a huge pain.

CW is not realizing, that the key for success is to make shows for nearly all ages, not just teenagers and wannabe-hipsters.

  • Justin121

Comic books are huge at the moment.

Then again, the CW has been nearing 0.00 ratings lately, and it has a huge negative “girly” stigma (picking up Carrie Diaries, Beauty & Beast, Emily Owens ain’t helping).

The Secret Circle and Ringer premiered at 1.2.

    That was in early September.

Now it’s early Octobor, and the results of the returnung series indicate that 0.5 is the new norm now.

Taking all that into cosideration, I’d predict a 1.2 for the Arrow premiere.

  • POI

i hope arrow premiered well in the ratings cuz it was amazing the best new show no doubt in that.

  • Rooks

I’m a little worried about Arrow…it was ok, but the show really needed to introduce a strong series villain, and no his mother just doesn’t cut it.

    Picture the following conversation:

Green Arrow: hey guys, how’s it going?
Superman: Not so good, Lex Luthor has a death ray pointed at Metropolis.
Batman: Ok. The Joker kidnapped Robin again, but no rush on that. What about you, Ollie?
Green Arrow: Well…uh my Mom…well, she cut off my allowance.
    Superman: …
    Batman: …
Green Arrow: And she totally took the keys to my Porsche!
    Superman: …Uh, I gotta go.
Batman: Err, yeah, I think I hear Robin calling…

Voted 1.0 or above… may just be “daring to dream”

Really enjoyed the pilot, will be watching with Supernatural in the weeks ahead.

  • loveyayall

I LOVED the pilot. Just watched it then, really glued me can’t wait for next weeks.

As for the ratings… people saying anything above a 1.0+ are kidding right? TV numbers have being down this year. And Ringer had heaps of buzz last year as well. TSC had a TVD lead in… With that all put into perspective I cannot see Arrow getting any better than a 0.7 but hey, I hope I’m wrong

  • iMember

@Justin212 The Secret Circle premiered with a 1.3 and even went to a 1.4 in its final quarter of the hour. Ringer had premiered with just a 1.2 though.

I am a person who loves action shows and scripts that have twists and turns keeping my attention from start to finish and ARROW has everything I look for in a favorite show. I might add that Ollie and his best friend are two gorgeous specimens of maleness. Way to go CW, you have scored huge.
    Thanks so much.

    A devoted fan of ARROW.
