“GMA” is #1 for the Week: Outperforming NBC’s “Today”

By 646,000 Total Viewers and 165,000 Adults 25-54

“GMA” Wins First Two Weeks of Season-Leading “Today” by Its Largest Season Margins in Overall Viewers and Key Demo in More than 21 Years

“GMA” Grows Year-to-Year Among Adults 25-54 (+3%) and Total Viewers (+5%)

While “Today” Declines -29% in Adults 25-54 and -19% Among Total Viewers

For the 2nd time in 2 weeks of the 2012-13 season, ABC News’ “Good Morning America” was the No. 1 morning news program in both Total Viewers (4.932 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.870 million) for the week of October 1, 2012, according to Nielsen Media Research.  “GMA” outdelivered “Today” (4.286 million and 1.705 million, respectively) by +646,000 Total Viewers and +165,000 Adults 25-54 to rank No. 1 in overall viewers for the last 8 weeks and No. 1 in the key adult news demo for the last 6 weeks.   Further, in winning the first 2 weeks of the season, “GMA” marked its strongest competitive start to a season in 21 years – since the 1991-92 season.

Versus the year-ago week (4.708 million and 1.823 million, respectively, on w/o 10/3/11), “GMA” increased by +5% in Total Viewers and by +3% in Adults 25-54.  In fact, “GMA” stood as the only morning program to post gains year to year as “CBS This Morning” was down (-2%/-3%) and “Today” fell by double digits (-19%/-29%).

Similar to its premiere week performance, “GMA” outdrew the “Today Show” in all 5 head-to-head telecasts of the week in both Total Viewers (Mon: +425,000, Tues: +723,000, Wed: +870,000, Thurs: +425,000 and Fri: +785,000) and Adults 25-54 (Mon: +63,000, Tues: +65,000, Wed: +284,000, Thurs: +161,000 and Fri: +253,000) and once again held the Top 5 telecasts of the week in Total Viewers.  Further, “GMA” staked claim to the week’s No. 1 morning telecast in both Total Viewers (5.087 million – 10/3/12) and Adults 25-54 (1.895 million – 10/5/12).

Two weeks into the 2012-13 season, “GMA” stands as the No. 1 morning news program in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54.  In fact, “GMA” is leading NBC’s “Today” by its largest season margins in overall viewers (+725,000) and in the key adult news demo (+210,000) in more than 21 years – since at least the 1991-92 season; Nielsen’s electronic database started on September of 1991.

Season to date “GMA” is the only morning program to grow in both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+2%) versus its year-ago averages (NBC’s “Today” is down -19%/-28%, respectively; CBS’ “This Morning” is +2%/flat, respectively).  “GMA” is seeing its largest overall season audience in 7 years and best Adults 25-54 performance in 5 years – since the 2005-06 and the 2007-08 seasons.

“GMA” towered over “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+95%) and Adults 25-54 (+86%).

Finally, in August, Goodmorningamerica.com reached 24M users and served over 99 million page views.  It is the #1 morning news website and beats MSNBC’s Today by millions of users every month. This summer, visitors spent +16% more time on Goodmorningamerica.com compared to Today.

I just hope Savannah Guthrie doesn’t get blamed for the Today Show’s sharp fall. It’s clearly due to the hubris of Matt Lauer. And I used to like him a great deal….especially the Meredith Viera years. I’m sure, with his contract, he’s shrugging this off.

  • Phinsfan

Get rid of Matt and Savannah both. They are both irritating

Last time I regulary watch “Today” was when Jane Pauly was on, b/c it is now to “Liberal” for me to view. This also goes for GMA and Early show on CBS. I now watch the Today. GMA, and CBS Early Show about everyother year if lucky on average. I watch Fox & Friends as often as I can.

ratings dropped when savannah was added to show a anchor and filled in for ann. savannah is the reason for the drop

  • carol

my post did not say what i wanted to. The ratings started falling when Savannah was hired for the 3rd hour and started filling in more and more in the 1st 2 hours instead of Amy.

@carol: The reason for the “Today” drop is Matt Lauer. He got his $25 million annual contract and actually started taking control of the show after Meredith Vierra left (some say after Katie Couric left for CBS).

Matt wanted Ann out and has been reportedly micromanaging the show. Now that he has Savannah, she’s not allowed to wear high-heels because she towers over him. Lauer still gets his $25 million even though Jay Leno had his salary cut in half by NBC in order to save some staffers’ jobs. Leno is not exactly my cup of tea, but he’s been loyal to NBC since Johnny Carson left in 1992. That’s 20 years after being Johnny’s prime substitute since a few years before Leno was signed as Carson’s replacement.

Letterman has become a political hack for the Democrats. He’s actually come out and told viewers NOT to vote Romney. He can’t understand why Romney nor Sarah Palin won’t guest on “Late Show,” because Dave only wants them for comedy fodder. Dave needs to retire and let Craig Ferguson take over 11:35.

I don’t watch anything with NBC anymore. They don’t treat people right and The Ann Curry firing was it for me. No NBC at this house. I love Good Morning America. I started watching when Jillian on Fox got fired. GMA is really good. My favorite new morning show! Go ABC!!!

Congratulations to GMA! #1 morning show! The anchors truly blend; not one
solo star = an A-Class teamwork! Gotta luv it! Today’s problem: devious, no
honesty, back biting, Lauer’s arrogance, haughtiness, his flighty & immature
cheerleaders; unrighteous pride; & all who refuse to communicate to their viewers
an apology for humiliating one of its loyal/honest & professional staff, & a
network who won’t make the wrong right! Karma is theirs & w/b w/them until
    they make the wrong right! They are in denial w/an aim for power. $$$$, & fame;
& they will fail at ALL! Shame on them! So be it or Amen to them!
