Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 14, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Gossip Girl final season 0.46
90210 :| :| :| 0.46
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.68
Supernatural      1.03
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 1.37
Arrow :) :) :) :) 1.48
Vampire Diaries      1.82

With its woeful premiere ratings, 90210 would be headed for certain cancellation anywhere else but the CW. However, the CW has shown a fondness for short final seasons of their veteran shows (One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl) once they are past their sell by dates, and that's what I'd expect for 90210. However, I reserve the right to keep the prediction a "toss up" for at least a while until we can see more results for other CW shows over the next few weeks.

Hart  Of Dixie's second episode ratings cooled noticeably, and it's now no better than a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation at the end of this season. It could become another one of the cancellation bear's sophomore snacks.

The rest of the CW shows likely have the folks at CW HQ giddy with their initial results.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think 90210 is best at 50/50, however CW is notorious for giving its veterans a final season so I expect that in May. I expect Nikita to certainly be renewed in May for a fourth season because as long as there is syndication, 3rd year shows will be safe.

“Giddy” just about sums it up. They’ll be holding their collective breaths to see what kind of a drop the shows have this week, but the good news is that so far nothing was DOA.
Supernatural is right where it shoud be — the best rated ‘veteran’ show after TVD. I hope for the CW’s sake that at least two of the newbies stay between SPN & TVD.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Emily Owens, MD tonight. I don’t have very high expectaions for it – Mamie Gumner notwithstanding.

  • Cody

I was able to watch the Arrow pilot on Hulu last night and I’m not into it. It just seemed kinda bland. With that being said I hope it holds steady just in hopes of SPN getting new viewers.

  • RG-X

CW needs to cancel 90210 – if the CW is too gain viewers in the demo – then they need to drop the teen craze stuff – b/c teens are not the demo.

They need to build on new shows. – better shows.

Arrow and B&B – look like a step in the right direction.

For the first time, I can’t believe I am doing it, but I am NOT supporting Supernatural’s renewal. I wouldn’t say the show has to be cancelled. But, I am not gonna feel sorry if the show is cancelled. I am already missing the show, BTW. But the first five seasons will remain my all time favorite at least for a few more years.

I haven’t watched the 8th season yet, but based on a few reviews and recaps I can say that “Show was dead during season 6 and 7 but now it has become a zombie”.

  • Tessa

I’m with Bill re 90210. None of these old shows will get cancelled. They will all get a “final season.” Gossip Girl and its terrible ratings are proof of that. So 90210 will live to see another season, either its shortened last or a full one depending on its ratings.

Supernatural will be renewed no matter what. I think Pedowitz is eying 10 seasons to break the record for the longest running American SciFi show.

Nikita too should go on to complete its syndication required numbers.

  • Tessa

You’re basing your judgment of season 8 on “a few” reviews? Man, glad you’re not a Nielsen Box owner.

  • KS

And as far as CW is concerned, I hope they slowly replace all their teenage shows with genre dramas. I mean, they can order proper Sci-Fi or Fantasy shows like Fringe, Sanctuary or Supernatural, not necessarily romantic Sci-fi stories.

I can pretty well see the network becoming completely online, once the contract ends.

  • Lynn

I do not watch 90210 but it is probably still cheaper then the CW shows with special effects and action, however its ratings are very worrisome. I could see 90210 getting canceled at the end of the year but what would the CW replace it with next year? I guess 90210’s fate will depend on how well the Carrie Diaries does, because I just do not see the CW canceling all there teen soaps in one year.

  • Tessa

Yeah, Arrow is pretty much a Dark Knight rehash but with an island instead of the Himalayas. I’m rooting for it too though, just so it provides the good lead-in for SPN.

  • KS

I forgot to add, also from a few reliable fans with whom I share interests about the show.

Am sorry, if my previous comment was too offensive.

But I haven’t given up on the show yet, I will certainly watch it during mid-season hiatus. I hate exams. And yeah, good chance I may be completely wrong in judging the show based on reviews of just 2 episodes.

  • JJA

I think it’s time for the CW to moves 90210 to Friday @ 9. The show could probably get a full season 6 in that timeslot.

I think the CW was expecting Gossip Girl to have a big “final season” bounce. Too bad :(

Emily Owens will be dead on arrival. The pilot was terrible. Then again, people said Beauty & The Beast was terrible.

I also think the CW should push-back the Nikita premier ’till November, AND move it to Monday or Tuesday (depending on whether 90210 moves to Friday, or if Emily Owens gets canceled). In the spring, Nikita could be paired with new show Cult.

  • Michael

Arrow is definitely a poor man’s version of Batman. With that being said, the show is still entertaining.

  • Arrow

Arrow perform solid for The CW; hope this can continue!

All fingers crossed CW gives us a better partner next Season than Supernatural-YUCK!

    Hopefully Deadman or Amazon.

  • Brian

Last 2 seasons of SPN were meh but the 2 eps this year have been great

  • Bonnie

The CW really needs to draw a line with giving veteran shows a final season. Even for CW standards, 90210 is performing terrible. The network now finally has a chance to reinvent itself by focussing more on developing quality shows like for excample “Arrow” and get rid the shows that give the CW a bad name in the first place. 90210 does not need a final season… it’s needs to be put out of it’s misery this May.

  • Wright

Glad to see TVD, SPN and Arrow doing so well.

  • Ricky

Glad to see Arrow staring well. Hope it gets the five green smileys soon!

If you wanna play, come and play today, the Elimination Game, yeah…

  • Jared

The CW LOVES a final season..but it doesn’t seem to be building buzz around GG at all. Those ratings are worse than ever.

  • Spence

The CW has been way too kind to their shows. If they’re smart, they’ll toughen up and don’t show any mercy for 90210 or any other low performing show on it’s schedule. With Gossip Girl ending and 90210 hopefully on it’s way out… things might be looking up afer all
