Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 14, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Gossip Girl final season 0.46
90210 :| :| :| 0.46
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.68
Supernatural      1.03
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 1.37
Arrow :) :) :) :) 1.48
Vampire Diaries      1.82

With its woeful premiere ratings, 90210 would be headed for certain cancellation anywhere else but the CW. However, the CW has shown a fondness for short final seasons of their veteran shows (One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl) once they are past their sell by dates, and that's what I'd expect for 90210. However, I reserve the right to keep the prediction a "toss up" for at least a while until we can see more results for other CW shows over the next few weeks.

Hart  Of Dixie's second episode ratings cooled noticeably, and it's now no better than a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation at the end of this season. It could become another one of the cancellation bear's sophomore snacks.

The rest of the CW shows likely have the folks at CW HQ giddy with their initial results.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Mark Wood,

    4. I thought it was awful (but hell tv is full of shows that I think are awful, so thats the one thats the least important in my opinion).

  • JAY S

If Arrow keeps it audience till the end of the season, the CW should try another superhero show and use arrow as lead in. Then they can move back Supernatural to fridays, cause it can survive there, OR they could try another night.

  • Riff Rafferty

    Beauty And The Beast 1.37

I used to watch the old “Beauty and the Beast” with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. But then I had to stop watching because it got too confusing to follow. I could never figure out which one was playing the beast.

  • PV

B&TB got a .7 this week. It took some weeks for The Secret Circle start falling last season, right? I know it’s not correct to compare to previous seasons numbers but, I think B&TB has less chance to survive than the other two shows at this point. It would get a .5 or less without TVD.

  • PV

CW should not give Emily Owens and B&TB a full season. They should replace them with Carrie Diaries and Cult as soon as they can.

  • John

@Jay S: I completely agree. Arrow was *much* better than I was expecting it to be, even with the good reviews. Given that its second-week numbers held steady (I love that on the CW, numbers that would only be acceptable on basic cable is good enough for a renewal–I really haven’t watched a CW show since its WB days with Buffy the Vampire Slayer), I think it’s heading for a renewal. And I think the CW is on to something with the superhero premise (though it certainly helps that the writing and acting are solid). I would love to know how Arrow is doing with male viewers, as it seems that most of the CW’s shows are more likely to be popular with women than men. I would guess that Arrow is probably doing better with young men than any of the other CW shows, Vampire Diaries included. If I was them, I’d start looking for other obscure but interesting superheroes.

  • AlexD

Glad Arrow is doing well. It’s a very promising show. I was only able to stomach Smallville for a couple of seasons before I called it quits.

  • thesnowleopard

Blahblahblah and the bottom line is that, with nary a single rating for Nikita’s *third* season out yet, you know no such thing about a fourth.

As for 90210, again, it’s not doing badly enough at the moment for the CW *not* to renew it. And it has proven relatively steady over the course of a season before. No need to bring in any alchemical nonsense about making extra episodes for Netflix when the hard logic of needing semi-solid shows to fill time slots is sufficient. If B&B stays above a 0.5, I bet it will get renewed, too. While I’m sure the CW is pleased that TVD, SPN and Arrow are holding up, three shows do not a week’s schedule make.

  • PV

If B&B stays above .8 it will get renewed. No way .5, TSC got .5 in its finale and it’s gone now. They have higher expectations for that timeslot.

  • thesnowleopard

Not if enough of their shows tank and they can’t get in enough new shows to replace them. Right now, anything on the CW that gets above a 0.6 is doing pretty well.

  • PV

@thesnowleopard but B&B got a .7 in its SECOND episode. Don’t you think it will surely fall a lot more? I mean, it’s only a tent ahead of Hart Of Dixie and 90210, and it has TVD’s lead in while others don’t. Also it’s in the beggining of the first season, while others are not rookies. I think it’s a safe bet to renew others non-rookies that are stable (but low) than B&B which barely started and is already doing poorly.

  • Peter Mazz

@PV Well… Next episode of B&TB Seems reeeeally goood…. I think that it will get an .8 or .9 in demo and a 2.06 of rating ;) Besides… every other show that it was on ”The Tuesdays 9PM Death Slot” is cancelled (Hellcats, Melrose Place 2.0, Ringer, Privileged… and this 2012 – 2013 season… Emily Owens) It’s already doomed! :D The Carrie Diaries will surely be a flop, and Gossip Girl is ending.. probably, 90210 will get cancelled this season too… So.. the CW will only have almost half of its schedule renewed if they cancell B&TB!

  • Peter Mazz

Oh… and NIKITA WON’T BE lucky enough for get renewed just for syndication porpuses:D I hope that The CW reduces the episode order to 13… and put TSC on mid season (A BOY CAN DREAM) But… i mean, 0.3 in a season premiere??!! COME ON! I bet it’s gonna have a .2 – .4 on the demo next episode :S I think that The CW will renew Hart of dixie, B&TB, 90210, TVD, SPN, Arrow & Cult :D

  • PV

@Peter Mazz You’re forgetting about Cult, it can be doomed as well, but it can also perform better than B&B. And I don’t think 90210 will get canceled. It had a TERRIBLE premiere, but the second episode got back to normal in demo.. and is only a tent less than B&B. Ok, B&B has a chance, but I think it may not be renewed after all. I think in the next update, Bill is going to change it for a “Toss up” already.

  • PV

Also I think Nikita may stay around until it completes 88 episodes. I mean… If they cancel it, they have nothing to put on fridays. The only show that can do good on friday is Supernatural… and it’s not going back to friday, it’s not friday material.
If they cancel Nikita and move B&B, or Dixie, or 90210 to fridays, the move would kill these shows and they would get about the same ratings that Nikita is getting now. (Also, moving TVD or Arrow to fridays is silly) So why would they cancel Nikita this season because it’s low rated and try another show in the same timeslot next season and end up killing it too? They better leave Nikita there cause it’s the show that is closer to syndication.

  • Clare

Cult is going to premiere on friday with Nikita, becuase none of the new shows are doing that bad. ANTM is being moved to the summer, even though the CW should rethink that if Nikita gets 0.3’s and 0.4’s all throughout the season. Since the CW does not have any replacement shows this season. Carries Diaries will premiere in January on Mondays and Cult on Friday’s since Top Model next season will be in the summer. The CW can’t afford to cancel any of their shows because they don’t have anything to replace it with except Flop Complex. They might have to bring back a show from the dead if it gets worse.

  • Bizarro

Ringer has a better chance of coming back to the CW than TSC. Most of the actors have moved on and while the Ringer cast has kept quiet and some have tried to move on, one cast member and Warner Bros I think even said there was no chance of TSC coming back. Mark was heartbroken over cancelling Ringer since he thought the show was very good and even said that if they reconsidered bringing the show back they would give it 13 eps and less breaks in the season (which is a midseason replacement). He hasn’t said anything about TSC and he really didn’t care for it probably. Ringer was picked up in more contries internatioanlly and was nominated and won more awards than TSC and after it was cancelled got picked up by a few more countries and became for a while the CW’s 3rd highest selling show on iTunes. But the network won’t be bringing either show back unless their shows were doing really really bad!

  • PV

I can’t see Ringer coming back. The ratings would be terrible (Everybody forgot about it) also, wasn’t SMG pregnant or something?

  • Brandy

Neither Ringer or Secret Circle are coming back!

  • Alan

I wish they would consider on bringing TSC back. It was the best new show of the 2011-2012 season, a lot of fans still want it back (the petitions are still moving), and I wouldn’t mind if some actors decide not to come back. If they bring back Britt Robertson, Shelley Henning, Phoebe Tonkin, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Chris Zylka, i’m fine.
If it was between Ringer and TSC, I think TSC would be the one. SMG’s pay check was big and the ratings were bad. I think that TSC’s actors are not as demanding as her. Please!
