Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 14, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) final season 0.47
The Mob Doctor  0.54
Ben And Kate :| :| :| 0.80
Raising Hope      0.80
The Mindy Project :) :) :) :) 0.95
Bones      1.00
The Cleveland Show :) :) :) :) 1.01
Bob's Burgers      (renewed 10/16) 1.13

New Girl      1.27
Family Guy already renewed 1.54
The Simpsons already renewed 1.58

10/16 PM update: No surprise that Bob's Burgers has been renewed for a fourth season.
With another in my series of "third season shows produced by their network are guaranteed a fourth season" prediction moves, Raising Hope is now predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season.

The fact that Ben And Kate received a full season order shouldn't give too much comfort to its fans. Assuming Fox wants to keep 2 hours of comedies on Tuesday, and that New Girl and Raising Hope will return next season, at a minimum, the lower rated of Ben And Kate and The Mindy Project is currently in danger of cancellation.

Fox's The Mob Doctor is still certain to be canceled no matter how many new actors they sign up for episodes that may never air.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Ben and Kate in my opinion is the most under rated new sitcom on tv. It’s in a tough spot on the schedule. The only reason The Mindy Project is doing better is that it follows the New Girl. By the way I think the Mindy Project is one of the worst sitcoms to come out in quite sometime. 15-20 years ago in the height of the sitcoms, that show would have been laughed off tv by the end of its second episode

  • Rebecca

Yay for Raising Hope! And I’m enjoying B&K, Mindy, NG and Bob’s Burgers, too. But of all of those, if Mindy had to only have one season that’s alright with me. The other shows are better IMO.

  • Dean-W

    I didn’t Know Bob’s Burgers was renewed great !

  • Bill Gorman

“Why would anybody want to even buy syndication rights to raising hope anyway? If it isn’t bringing in viewers the first time around, what makes anyone think it will be a worthy investment to bring it around in reruns”

At the right price, any syndicated show can make money for the syndicatee.

As for your question. ‘Til Death is syndicated. Nuff said.

  • eridapo

So basically at the end of this season, Fox will probably have only 2 1-hour scripted shows (Bones and Glee). I know Touch is coming, but it is going to Friday.. Not much a future there.

What else do they have in mind for Spring?

  • The End

Why would anyone buy syndication rights to Raising Hope you say? That’s simple, this is a harmless family type show that any network can air during the afternoon/evening.

There’s an audience for these kinds of shows, that fall into the same area as The Middle, Malcolm in the Middle, and other family orietated type programs.

  • jT

Raising hope gets better ratings than community, 30 rock, and parks and recreation…..there’s your market right there.

New girl just needs a boost……it will be fine before it’s 2014 post superbowl spot.

  • Nick

I don’t get why people think Touch is going to fail so terribly. If Fox actually does what they say they’re going to do, Touch will be paired with Hell’s Kitchen in midseason. If it gets that as a lead-in, it will have a lead-in of 2.0-2.5. It would probably get 1.3-1.6, which would be fantastic for Fridays.

  • Dan

@Nick – Touch will fail because Fox is waiting until January to premiere it. They should give it a fair shot at a 22 episode season and air it after Bones when The Mob Doctor gets pulled in November. (Lets hope that Fox makes that decision because Mob Doctor has no chance)

And as for Raising Hope, it would make a good show in syndication so it should be a good sell. My guess is that if anything is renewed for 2013-2013 it will be The Mindy Project and Fox will have that New Girl and Raising Hope along with a new comedy on their 2 hour Tuesday block next fall.

  • Dan

Another difference between Hope and Til Death besides Sony owning the latter (and slashing the licensing fee) is that Til Death had over 37 episodes for its fourths season after being pulled into its 7 episode third season. If Raising Hope got pulled after 7 episodes this season than it may be like Til Death but Hope is in good shape and will maintain its timeslot until May (Unlike Til Death which was set to move to fridays during its 2008-2009 season. Raising Hope like CW’s Nikita will likely remain in its current timeslot until May 2014, then if ratings are still garbage, FOX can dump it and by then hopefully Fox will have found better performing comedies. I cant see Raising Hope being pulled into the summer like Til Death.

I love “Raising Hope” and believe it will get a 4th season but 3 seasons did kill off some great sitcoms like “Just the Ten of Us,” “8 Simple Rules,” “Hope & Faith,” “My 2 Dads,” “Roc,” & “Herman’s Head.” Although “Just the Ten of Us” should NEVER have been cancelled since ratings were still high.

  • Ultima

What else do they have in mind for Spring?

The Following. They’re already running promotions for it (although they haven’t gone full-TBS or anything).

  • omabin

I am still not conviced following will premiere on mondays opposite to the voice and 2 broke girls, but well, it remains to be seen.

It’s funny how each network seems to have a really cursed day that they really just give up on…
    Fox: Mondays
    NBC: Thursdays
    CBS: Sundays
    CW: Mondays
ABC: Tuesdays (it’s less obvious, but still)

  • Riff Rafferty

If Raising Hope doesn’t get renewed and reach syndication numbers after FOX letting Til Death reach syndication numbers, I’ll be pissed

Yeah, you’re forgetting one crucial piece of the puzzle here. Sony aren’t GREEDY $CUM-$UCKING LEECHES whose entire attitude about the backend is MORE MORE MORE MONEY MONEY MONEY GIMME GIMME GIMME MORE MORE MORE.

Let’s count up all the struggling shows 20th tried to save the past few years. There was, um… and that, uh… or you know the, what was it now…

  • Riff Rafferty

By the way I think the Mindy Project is one of the worst sitcoms to come out in quite sometime.

The tech credits on that pilot were so embarrassingly incompetent I thought I got a badly-mastered video file when I first saw it this summer. But, nope, that’s exactly what it looked like on TV. Apparently, the series at least seems to have gotten a DP who isn’t blind, but I still have a question here. While the cridiotics are all pushing each other out of the way to see who can shove their head up Mindy’s muff the furthest, perhaps some of them can think about maybe, I don’t know, taking up a collection to buy her some acting lessons or something? If the show is so SMART!, imagine how much more so it would be if the lead could actually carry the extras’ jockstraps?

  • Jon

I just hope Greg Garcia is smart this time and wraps up Raising Hope in Season 4. No cliffhanger

  • Ian

Sony aren’t GREEDY $CUM-$UCKING LEECHES? Really? In what universe?

  • Emy

Remember the days when Fringe got shipped to fridays after hitting a couple of 1.9

And now Ben and Kate gets the full season treatment with 1.2 and Mob doctor is still breathing after hitting a 1.0

    Strange times

  • Ultima

It’s funny how each network seems to have a really cursed day that they really just give up on…
    Fox: Mondays

FOX Mondays are cursed? In the previous 8 seasons, five of them had 24 airing on Mondays and four had House airing on Mondays.

When did you start watching TV? Last year?
