10/18 Update: Animal Practice has been canceled.
-
Rookie sitcom Guys With Kids certain drew its share of predictions of doom from our commenters, but its first two weeks of ratings were at 80% and 89% of NBC's overall scripted average. Shows with those relative ratings would be renewed were the season to end today. It's third week rating was only 78% of NBC's scripted show average that week, right on the edge of the "toss up" range. Any more relative ratings declines and the show is more likely to be #bearchow than not.

Up All Night and Animal Practice are each certain to be canceled by the end of the season.

Where's the bear? He's not just in the NBC post this season, he's moving around!

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Look I am Happy For The New Normal. I don’t want it to drop. I want another renewal! :P

  • BL

Grimm should be certain renewal. It always wins its time-slot every Friday so far this season.

  • Jeremy

They might have something with Guys With Kids but they need to put it behind something else to get better ratings!

  • Glue

I heard this was a good show. I Might try it (GWK) But i don’t wanna watch it and then they cancel it. :/

I really think Grimm should be a 5 at this point. It’s incredibly stable, and high-rated enough to outrate a lot of NBC’s Monday-Thursday shows at this point. It’s the least of NBC’s issues right now.

  • Jeff (Canada)

Even though I hate Whitney, I think it’s a good idea to pair it up with Guys With Kids on Wednesday nights.

  • Jimmy

Revolution is a hit and miss type of show. Blah. Relieved for The New Normal!!! And it just sucks that Christina Applegate can’t get a series that lasts. I’d love to see her doing well in TV again. That hopefull thinking didn’t work well in her SNL hosting gigg this past Saturday. Hope Up All Night stays put.

  • @ramirescl

I think Chicafo Fire will fall hard soon

NBC Revolution – Is it for real or is it another Event, or Smash, or V?

    “yeah

The Event ratings numbers were good when it started. A LOT of shows go to hell by Feb.

Guys With Kids is going to be given a second chance. For a show on the half hour (:30) to increase out of its (:00), especially on NBC, NBC has to consider the effects of Animal Practice. Animal Practice gets yanked and Guys With Kids gets a second look somewhere else. Don’t forget it, their boy Jimmy Fallon is associated with Guys With Kids. Still don’t see it surviving for a second season, though.

  • senor chang

Guys With Kids might also benefit if Whitney needs a partner. Multicams at 8 on Wednesday wouldn’t be a bad idea with the right shows.

  • kill00

Yes Go On must be renewd. That is my favorite new sitcom this year.

  • Tommy Mickens

I agree that Grimm should be certain renewal looking at its stability when moved around the schedule early on this summer/season and also that it tops Fridays. It’s on the syndication path and almost guaranteed four seasons now.

  • Honey Badger

    Animal Practice
    Up All Night
    30 Rock final season
    Guys With Kids
    Grimm (F)
    Parks & Recreation
    all cancelled by NBC

I’m a little confused with the numbers, for instance: why is Parenthood all 5 green smiles and has a smaller margin (0.92) than The New Normal 1.1), but TNN has only 4 yellow smiles? Puzzled. Maybe it depends on time slot or day of the week perhaps.

  • Lynn

    bring back Community!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Syndication potential.

I already put the syndication gods in the Fox headline, and wanted to get GWK in NBC’s, but unless something wacky happens this week, likely Parenthood will be in NBC’s headline next week for that reason.

    Animal Practice
    Up All Night
    30 Rock final season
    Guys With Kids
    Grimm (F)
    Parks & Recreation
    all cancelled by NBC

What? Almost no chance Grimm is cancelled. Also Parks & Rec stands a pretty good chance of getting at least one more season being as The Office and 30 Rock are ending, and Up All Night, Animal Practice, and Guys with Kids are doing poorly. If they cancel Parks, they will go into next season with Go On (and MAYBE New Normal depending on how it holds up).

  • Dan

I expect in a couple of weeks NBC will move Up All Night and Animal Practice to be moved to fridays at 8 and 8:30. That will free up a scpace at 8 Wednesdays for the return of Whitney pairing with Guys With Kids and Community to return to Thursdays at 8:30. That way GWK has a chance (and so does Whitney and a full year) and Community can begin its season.

    NBC please do this

    Wed
    8:00 Whitney
    8:30 Guys With Kids
    9:00 SVU
    10:00 Chicago Fire

    Thur
    8:00 30 Rock
    8:30 Community
    9:00 The Office
    9:30 Parks and Rec
    10:00 Rock Center

    Fri
    8:00 Animal Practice
    8:30 Up All Night
    9:00 Grimm
    10:00 Dateline

i think grimm should be certain renewal…it’s getting the same ratings as last year when it got renewed early…

chicago fire should be on the bubble…it’s premiere numbers weren’t very good…it will be getting a 1.5 in a week or two…
