ABC has opted not to pick up the back nine episodes of Private Practice. Episode 613 will be the series finale. Star Kate Walsh announced last spring that she would be leaving the show after this season's thirteenth episode. According to Deadline, ABC and showrunner Shonda Rhimes came to a mutual decision to end this show. The show has struggled in the ratings since moving to Tuesday at 10PM. The most recent episode on October 9 garnered a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating and ranked last in the time period. Rhimes tweeted a note to fans that reads in part, "I’m sad to say that Private Practice’s run will end after episode 613 this season. There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line." You can read the rest here.

    Is anybody surprised? The show has been struggling for a while now. Besides, Kate announcing she was leaving the show was pretty much a dead giveaway that the show was ending after she left. The entire reason Private Practice even exists is because Shonda wanted to give Kate’s character her own spin-off. With Kate, the show wouldn’t exist. Why continue a show when the main character is leaving?

    If the show drew good ratings, they could have pulled an “Andy Griffith Show” scenario and gotten maybe another 3 years out of it, like they did for “Mayberry R.F.D.

    Unfortunately, the ratings weren’t good and none of the other characters developed enough of a following.

    YES!

    I despise “Medical Dramas” so much!

    Oh I am quite sad but I don’t see how this show could have gone on without Kate Walsh. She was the show in many ways, it was built around her character.

    @Bill looks like you don’t need the one frown face for PP now that its officially canceled I knew ABC would make the official announcement. I never actually thought ABC would order the back 9 but at least the show will get a proper finale and heavy promotion. The real question is will the renew cancel index be about PPs cancellation or 666 and Last Resorts additional scripts.

  • THE OLD MAN

    Another feast for the bear! Maybe some Rhine Whine with Shonda & company.

  • Valerie

    I read it was a mutual agreement to end the show, so isn’t it final season then? Why say it is cancelled when it is final season?

  • Brian

    I feel bad for some of the cast..not Kate Walsh) who i think the public is sick of!Never liked the show.

  • Dan

    My guess is that with Privaye Practice finishing by February, Body of Proof will return around late February early March and if it can perform better than PP than it can get a fourth year maybe next fall. Scandal will likely get additional episodes and I think Last Resort and 666 may get more too.

    I don’t think ABC will pull any dramas this fall. They will likely let the low rated ones air out its episodes and then prepare for midseason accordingly. I also don’t think Those two new comedies (scheduled for 8 and 8:30 on Tuesdays) will air there. One will likely replace Malibu County in January and the other will replace The Neighbors by March or April.

    Great decision to end it after thirteen episodes. Why continue the show when Kate Walsh is exiting the series? I do hope Kate will come back to Grey’s in the future. I hope they end it well.

  • Andoni

    But it’s not technically canceled, right? I mean, not renewing a TV show is not the same as canceling it.

  • Dan

    @Andoni – Its safe to say now that the show is in its “Final Season” like Gossip Girl, The Office and 30 Rock. This was something that should have been said back in May but why they waited this long is beyond me and why they wanted not to approach this as the final year is also odd.

    Now a proper finale can be created for the series.

    Don’t kid yourselves.

    It has been canceled.

    @S
    Whoever you are, I assure I am no PR person. I am a fan. Back when PPP premiered I watched the first episode and did not like it. Didn’t like the dynamics of the cast and I absolutely disliked Cooper with a vengeance. But when I heard that Derek’s sister was in PPP I checked it out and she quickly became my favorite. And in the process I came to love Charlotte and Cooper. Those 3 characters are the reasons I now watch PPP. I know CharCoop would not fit into the Grey’s dynamic but Amelia has a brother and just like when Lexie showed up, having Derek’s sister with whom he’s had a troubled relationship and who has just lost the love of her life, lost a baby and is recovering from a drug addiction would bring a sharp, dark edge to SGMW which is what Shonda is going for this year. And about Twitter, please! Twitter does not determine the status of a show. I see shows trending all the time that are ratings stinkers. I don’t even follow Caterina Scorcone who plays Amelia. Because there is a difference between life and fiction. As much as I may like a character, that doesn’t mean I have an interest in what the actor has to say. I used to follow some actors and got tired of the pics of the food they would eat or stuff that I was not interested in and would crowd up my feed.

    @a p garcia
    Agreed! Personally, I think that too many celebrities are getting involved in things that they know nothing about and it makes them look foolish. That’s the reason I don’t follow celebrities on Twitter.

    @ Nick,
    It would be a mistake for ABC to try to make Tuesday a male-focused night. That is CBS’ biggest night of the week with NCIS and NCIS-LA and ABC has not been able to produce strong male-focused shows thus far that can compete. Last Resort included. Besides, Tuesday has cable competition and people catching up with their DVR recordings from the previous two sports nights.

  • reality check

    Grey’s Anatomy is the only reason this show stayed afloat

  • KJ Styles

    The cancellation bear reminds me of Ryback from the WWE….FEED ME MORE!!

  • Tyson

    “Mutual decision” is PR spin/save face talk for “canceled.”

    “Final season” is when the show ends despite network wishes.

  • Dan

    With this news I still expect Grey’s Anatomy, Castle, Modern Family, The Middle, Revenge, and Once Upon a Time to definitely be around for 2013-2014.

  • Nick

    @omabin

    I like your schedule, except for two things:

    1) ABC has already announced that Primetime Nightline will be on Fri@9 in March. Do you want LMS and MC to move to 8 pm after Shark Tank airs all its (22) episodes? That’s entirely possible, because it started earlier and there’s no debate or awards interruputions on Friday.
    2) What’s going to be on while DWTS: Results is between cycles?
