Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 21, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) final season 0.48
The Mob Doctor  0.55
Ben And Kate   0.75
Raising Hope      0.81
The Mindy Project :) :) :) :) 0.97
Bones      1.02
The Cleveland Show :) :) :) :) 1.03
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.15
American Dad already renewed 1.19
Glee      1.23
New Girl      1.30
Family Guy already renewed 1.57
The Simpsons already renewed 1.61

The fact that Ben And Kate received a full season order shouldn't give any comfort to its fans about its renewal prospects. With last week's terrible 1.2 adults 18-49 rating, it's now fallen into the "likely to be canceled" range. If you want to look at it from an either/or perspective, assuming Fox wants to keep its 2 hours of sitcoms on Tuesday, and New Girl and Raising Hope are a given for next season, they're going to want to introduce at least one new sitcom, so the lower rated of Ben And Kate and The Mindy Project is on it's way out. The higher rated of the two might be as well, but we'll have plenty of time to talk about that for the rest of the season.

Fox's The Mob Doctor is still certain to be canceled even if it airs through the month of November, and beyond!

Raising Hope is now predicted as "certain to be renewed" even with its somewhat weak early ratings. While the syndication gods ruling Fox aren't quite as predictable as those ruling CBS, it would take nothing short of a cataclysm to prevent the show from getting a fourth season.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@madbengalsfan85 Fair enough. I guess I was simply stating that if FOX decided to not air all the ordered episodes of 2 of its 30 mins comedies, Glee could fill that spot and break the comedic theme. I suppose that’s unlikely though with B&K having a full-season order.

  • Brian J

Might this be a good comedy for either NBC or ABC to pick up? It seems to be pretty well reviewed, which is a plus, and it could pair well with either “Happy Endings,” “Go On,” or some other show in development.

Or maybe even the CW, if it’s interested in doing comedy.

  • JP

That would be a shame about Ben & Kate. It’s my favorite new comedy this year.

  • Bill Gorman

“Or maybe even the CW, if it’s interested in doing comedy.”

The CW doesn’t air scripted shows that aren’t produced by CBS or Warner Brothers.

    Fox produces B&K

  • Casey

I love being a fan of animated series that air on Fox. Never do I have to wait until May for a renewal announcement. I don’t think I’ll be waiting until May for news on the Cleveland Show for next year but I do believe there is an episode backlog that might allow Fox to air new episodes next year without producing any more.

Besides, out of all those shows The Cleveland Show is the one I wouldn’t have any issue with losing.

  • ann

Not surprising as Ben&Kate is not funny.

  • River

Just the kind of show Reilly will stick with, despite performance.

  • Precious

The Simpsons is the highest rated scripted show on CBS? WOW! Have not seen that in a long time. I guess that means it could go beyond its 25th season?

  • Nick

Sadly, I agree that B&K won’t make it through the season. :'(

In which alternate Fringe universe is the Simpsons on CBS?

  • Ryan

So sad because it’s really good. Surprises me this show gets bad ratings yet a crap fest (IMO) like Mindy gets good ratings.

  • senor chang

And yet Family Guy has made it this far…

  • BxGuy

has there ever been a successful sitcom where a “white” group is paired off with a “fish out of water” black friend?

  • Shocker

I recorded the first episode and thought it was stupid, nothing surprising.

  • Phil

I wish Mob Doctor is cancelled so we can have back Touch!!!

  • Dan

My guess is that even with terrible numbers Mindy Project will be renewed in May while B&K will be axed, Here’s my January schedule

    8:00 Bones
    9:00 Touch (Jan-March) / The Following (March-May)

    8:00 Raising Hope
    8:30 Ben & Kate (Jan-March) / Goodwin Games (March-May)
    9:00 New Girl
    9:30 Mindy Project

    8:00 American Idol

    8:00 American Idol
    9:00 The Following (Jan-March) / Glee (March-May)

    8:00 Kitchen Nightmares
    9:00 Fringe (Jan-Feb) / Touch (Mar-May)

My guess is while Glee is on hiatus, FOX will give the Thursday 9:00 slot to The Following as their only hope for a drama renewal. And also in January they will air Touch on Mondays replacing the Mob Doctor. When Fringe ends in February Touch will likely move to its slot so The Following can move to Mondays at 9 so in March Idol can expand to 2 hours on Thursdays and then in late March Glee will return to Thursdays at 9.
Mob Doctor will likely air all 13 episodes through December so FOX wont have to air repeats. Kitchen Nightmares should air in its current slot all season. With Raising Hope, New Girl, and Mindy all getting 24 episodes, its safe to assume all 3 will remain in their current slots while Ben & Kate will likely get replaced by The Goodwin Games. Its possible Goodwin or Mindy may get a special post Idol episode but its too early to tell.

This is the most realistic schedule given on how FOX may want to handle their series.

  • OliveGinger

I love the Mindy Project — its so much better/funnier/more appealing than Girls, and I even prefer it to New Girl. I like B&K as well though and am sorry it likely won’t be renewed.

  • River

Dan wasted his time with that schedule only an hour before Fox announced theirs.

As for B&K, it depends on development. Networks have left struggling shows on for years because the newer crop is no better. Heck, we don’t even know that the Goodwin Games will do better.

  • KJ Styles

Typical of FOX to give a full season order to a show with terrible ratings. That move makes absolutely no sense given that they still have to air The Goodwin Games (the only sitcom they have that looks remotely interesting).

  • Cameron

    I like Ben and Kate.
