NEW SERIES — “VEGAS” AND “Elementary

Freshman Dramas Win Their Time Periods in Viewers and Key Demographics

CBS has given full season “back nine” orders to television's top two freshman series — VEGAS and Elementary.

“VEGAS and Elementary have opened strong, delivering big audiences and winning performances in important time periods,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment.  “Each of the shows has rich characters, big stars and a unique visual style that have stood out in the crowd, helping make two of our strongest nights even stronger.”

VEGAS, the #1 new series of the season and ranked sixth overall, wins its Tuesday (10:00-11:00 PM) time period in viewers and key demographics, averaging 14.94 million viewers, 2.7/08 in adults 18-49 and 3.8/09 in adults 25-54.  VEGAS has improved the year-ago time period by +8% in viewers.

Elementary, the #2 new series of the season and ranked ninth overall, also wins its Thursday (10:00-11:00 PM) time period in the key ratings measures, averaging 14.30 million viewers, 3.5/10 in adults 18-49 and 4.6/11 in adults 25-54. Compared to the time period last year, ELEMENTARY is up +17% in adults 18-49 and +10% in adults 25-54.

VEGAS stars Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jason O'Mara, Taylor Handley and Sarah Jones.  Greg Walker, Nicholas Pileggi, Cathy Konrad, Arthur Sarkissian and James Mangold are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, Aidan Quinn and Jon Michael Hill.  Rob Doherty, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

I’m 20 and most of the shows I watch are CBS, just saying.

  • Gublin

i laugh when people criticize CBS for tailoring their shows for ‘old’ people.
….’cause that’s who still watch tv.

  • Observer

    I don’t watch CBS and I’m old.

  • Rob R

Katie— I respect that you enjoy CBS, but there is no universe in which “Hawaii Five O” is either “smart” or “mature.”

  • THE OLD MAN

No brainers for either back nine

  • Shawn1

As already mentioned, no suprises there. CBS can’t cancel too many new shows without proper alternatives, and both Elementary and Vegas are doing too good at the moment to constitute a problem.

That said, Vegas is down to a hardly impressive 2.0 in only its third week. There’s no room for much more bleeding, and even a 2.0 could already be enough to cause its cancellation. Plus, that show’s not going to skew any younger.

Elementary might be save only because its CBS’ highest-rated new drama and the network might want to save face by not cancelling all their new shows. Then again, Elementary is already doing worse than TM ever did among viewers and adults 18-49. It should keep its 2.3 to remain save.

@Shabbir, Patrick Jane IS Red John, he just doesn’t realize it (split personality).

He killed his own wife and daughter. That’s why all of Red John’s disciples find it so amusing when they get investigated by Mr. Jane. They can’t believe their boss is so clueless.

I’m gonna be evil and selfish and say this is good solely for the reason they might drop further in the ratings and become “The Mentalist”:s saving grace come May.

  • CP

I think people are missing out on Vegas. I love it and Blue Bloods and I’m only 31. But I’m also a bit of an old soul, so….

  • ABC hater

    Didn’t Vegas just score a 1.5? :O

  • Bill

Its called acting, enjoy it. Then you can return to snookie.

  • alexjones

I bet they’re regretting giving vegas a full season now, heaven knows what ratings it’ll be getting by may.

  • Miss Kiki

Never watched Vegas and never will, Jason O’Mara is the kiss of death
Elementary is by the numbers, Lucy Liu could phone it in but I love Jonny Lee Miller so I watch every week

  • Pako

I kind of like Vegas. Didn’t expect much at first. I don’t like casinos and don’t sympatize organized crime.
But it does give an insight of how the police worked when they didn’t have nationwide internet databases, DNA and other forensic stuff, but long rifles instead.

  • JJF

Vegas last pulled a 10-11ish mil/1.5. That’s the No. 1 series? Looks like this season is a wash.

  • Riff Rafferty

CBS has given full season “back nine” orders to … ELEMENTARY.

Jolly good show. Finally, Aiden Quinn gets the Thursday 10:00pm hit he deserved last season.

  • slw989

Elementary should be cancelled. Its a complete rip off of a BRILLANT BBC show that CBS asked if they could adapt and Moffat/Gattis told them no. So they go “Oh, well well just change John Watson to a girl and set it in America with a British dude who got to Study the guy who plays Holmes in the British version that we want to copy all summer when they switched roles in “Frankenstien”… yeah thats totally original…

and seriously? Joan Watson? How in the HELL is that a good idea? So they can have sex and sexual tension?

    Good job CBS… good job…
