Lina Kaufman was a married mother of two when one morning her husband found her in the bathroom, slumped over a magazine rack. Adam Kaufman hysterically called 911 and unsuccessfully tried to revive her.

“I just remember being in a frantic mode to save her,” Kaufman tells correspondent Erin Moriarty in 48 HOURS: “Lina’s Heart,” airing Saturday, Oct. 27 on the CBS Television Network (10:00 PM, ET/PT).

It was a story that gripped Aventura, Fla., because Lina Kaufman was just 33 years old when she died in 2007, and the circumstances around her death were so strange.

Lina’s death stunned loved ones. Lina’s friend, Melissa Fedowitz, says she “could not comprehend” how a healthy woman “just dies.” Police had trouble buying that a seemingly healthy woman died, too.

Adam says that he went to bed and that the next time he saw his wife, she was in the bathroom.  “I remember going over to her and seeing all this red stuff all over,” he tells Moriarty. “Pink, almost frothy, whatever it was. And I remember grabbing her from the back and she felt cold.”

For 18 months, Adam says he badgered the Dade County, Fla., medical examiner’s office seeking a conclusive explanation for his wife’s death. At one point, they thought she may have had an allergic reaction to a spray tan. Then, in April 2009, he got an answer neither he nor his family expected, when he was charged with killing his wife by “mechanical asphyxiation.”

“Eighteen months later, it was like a second death in the family,” Seth Kaufman, Adam’s twin brother, tells Moriarty.

Moriarty and the 48 HOURS team piece together Lina’s life and the police investigation into her death through interviews with Adam and Seth, in addition to Lina’s friends and family, who don’t believe Adam could have killed his wife, as well as the prosecution on the case.

48 HOURS: “Lina’s Heart” is produced by Lisa Freed and Tamara Weitzman. Elena DiFiore is the field producer. Doreen Schechter is the producer/editor. Joan Adelman, David Franklin and Marcus Balsam are the editors. Judy Tygard is the senior producer. Al Briganti is the executive editor. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

“Lina’s Heart” is part of 48 HOURS’ 25th full season. It’s the third-longest-running primetime series and has been the #1 non-sports program on Saturday nights for six consecutive seasons.
