Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    3 questions:

    1. Where can you read about all of the demos (ie. high-income, kids, teens, etc.)? I know it’s not relevant to cancellation/renewal, but I’m interested to see them.

    2. How do you customize comments on this website to be italic, bold, linked, etc.?

    3. Is anyone who comments on this website actually a Nielsen household member?

  • Max Vrany

    @Melissa,

    1: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/09/02/whats-a-tv-rating-and-who-is-it-dating-2012-13-edition/147028/

2: “b” in “” gives you bold. Remember to use “/b” in “” to end bold. Same deal with italic, just replace the “b” with an “i”. URLs should link automatically like above. There’s a way to have a link display different text, but I’m pressed for time right now so I can’t figure it out.

3: I don’t know, as Nielsen families aren’t supposed to say they’re Nielsen families, especially in a forum like this.

  • eridapo

    @ Melissa,

    1. You have to pay for that info.

    2. use greater than or less than

    3. if they are, they are laughing their behinds when they read most of the comments.

  • r0ckmypants

@Jeff – I agree that it’s certainly helped by its new slot, but it’s been up and down within one tenth for weeks. It’s not bleeding viewers despite the increasing complexity, AND it’s doing better than it was at this point last season.

  • Max Vrany

For some reason the disappeared from my comment. One commenting feature this site lacks* is plain-text/ignore formatting. The characters you need are the ones you get when you hold shift and type the comma and period keys.

    *as far as I’m aware

  • Max Vrany

Greater than or less than characters. That’s what they are.

  • Melissa

I think I got it. Thanks.

  • Richard Steven Hack

I agree with Jeff that Revenge needs to watch out against becoming TOO complicated. The last couple of episodes have been all over the place. They need to get past Emily’s mother and get on with The Initiative conspiracy and also return to the goal of trashing the Graysons.

The one-tenth point slide this week was irrelevant – they were dealing with the World Series. Half of San Francisco was down town celebrating, I can tell you that much.

Once Upon a Time was pretty good – any time they deal mostly with Parilla and Carlyle, it’s a good show.

  • 9a3

Amazing Race is great. I’m glad I was part of the nine million plus watching this exciting and educational reality competition instead of watching some boring sports programming. I tried to watch a few minutes of 666 Park Avenue and it seemed like a real snooze-fest.

  • JR

Once Upon a Time is must-see viewing. Should be even higher than 3.4. :)

  • Ray

Yay for Once Upon a Time!

Revenge was down because it was on the same time as the world series. The ratings should be up next week.

666 is dead. I really wished I would get into it but, they focus it way too much on the writer and the blonde next door. Plus, AHS does the horror thing so much better.

Who is this Max guy? I visit this site occasionally, and each time Max is the first to comment. I find it very suspicious that Max is the first to comment, and despite his rude and obnoxious comments, he isn’t blocked. Most sites would remove people like that, but I guess this site doesn’t have the same commenting rules and standards that most good website have.
And it seems as if the creators of this site may be commenting under the name “Max” to try to increase comments and traffic to the site.

  • Holly

    @Jay,

Max’s posts may be silly, but the ones I recall haven’t been rude or offensive. If Bill and Robert were going to start banning people for stupid posts, there would be very few comments left.

There’s plenty of crazy people who’ll comment without us bothering to “fake” it.

And plenty of crazy people who’ll dream up conspiracy theories about it too.

We don’t block people for being idiots, only if they’re sock puppets.

Is that number accurate 27.99 million viewers for The 7:00 PM Fox Sunday Football that is unreal it crushed The Sunday Night game and that’s usually the highest rated of the night.

    Yes.

that is unreal it crushed The Sunday Night game and that’s usually the highest rated of the night.

No; the FOX or CBS national doubleheader almost always does better than Sunday Night Football.
