Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 28, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.34
Emily Owens, M.D.  0.54
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.77
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.12
Supernatural      1.18
Arrow      1.66
Vampire Diaries      1.88

Ratings for freshman drama Emily Owens, M.D. started low, and went even lower in its second week. It's now likely to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @herpderp that is true.

Emily Owens will not last the season. I think Cult will replace it and Cult looks interesting and has the guy who played Alaric. It might make sense to air Cult after TVD, as Alaric fans might watch just for him.

The answer for CW may be to diversify, but that does not mean it should suddenly start making all superhero shows and not make any shows that appeal to young women. Young women have been their core audience, and it makes sense to try to keep them AND get other viewers. Why give up the viewers they have already? But Emily misses the mark, not interesting enough to even try watching. CW should try a variety of shows like TVD but also shows like Gossip Girl, that approach makes sense long term.

It is amazing that Nikita lives on with such awful ratings. I tried to watch it, but it was not very interesting, all surface gorgeous women and action set pieces without interesting characters to care about. The original French movie was great, the American remake was good, even the first series was OK, but this is diluted.

Another problem the CW has is bad casting, poor casting choices doomed the Secret Circle. TVD has a great cast of charismatic people, but for some reason TSC cast pretty people who may look good in still shots, but who had little or no charisma or chemistry with each other, except Phoebe Tonkin.

They need to bring back The LA Complex!!

The only reason why it did bad is because it premiered mid-season. Mid-season shows tend to do bad because they’re competing with shows already in progress.

And yes, you can add this to my bingo sheet!

@Reward You have to look at the population sizes, so if Nikita is popular in China, the chances of renewal is greater.

  • Kelly

    Isn’t baseball over now?

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

“SERIOUS stop the dump not funny jokes!! and Nikita is a GOOD show its just dont get good promoted by the CW like they do with TVD and Arrow.. ITS NOT FAIR!!”

When have TV broadcast TV decisions ever been made on what one small national fan base considered fair?

BTW, Word on the street is that Nikita’s ratings are so poor Dr. Zoe Hart and Dr. Emily Owens have been called in to perform resuscitation ;-)

  • John A

Any proof that Nikita is popular in China?

  • CBSviewer

Bye Bye Nikita, Emily Owens and Beauty and the beast. Supernatural should be already renewed for two more seasons (if it got 11 seasons it will be on the air as long as the CW itself) :)

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

    @John A
“Any proof that Nikita is popular in China?”

Good point John!!! As ever when I do an internet search I can find no data on this assertion although that does not necessarily mean it is not true. When I type in “Nikita ratings China” I get information about dish ware. This question will not stop someone from typing “all my Chinese friends watch it!!!!!!” failing to realize that our friends often tend to watch the same shows we do.

  • Tony

Nikita will not a cancelled because CW will renewed it for syndication..88 episodes..the show is a very popular is worldwide and this is the reason which Nikita will survive …

  • Mickey

    I meant basketball.

  • Sid

Here’s one proof I have that Nikita has a prime comfy slot:

In WarnerTvAsia(which is covered in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore). Nikita airs Mondays at 10p.

    Here’s the page:

  • Sid

Oh it’s also covered in Sri Lanka and Taiwan. Now I don’t have the actual numerical ratings, but I’d assume that they must be descent since Nikita aired Seasons 1 and 2 already on Mondays at 10p.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

“Here’s one proof I have that Nikita has a prime comfy slot”

That is hardly any kind of proof of good ratings in Asia. Being broadcast does not mean high ratings. Also that WBTV airs the show is hardly surprising since it is a company show. It is worth noting that they are still airing the long since cancelled shows Memphis Beat and V.

  • Eric_Philly

    Most excellent!

  • KS

I don’t know about other Asian countries, but as far as India is concerned, I can say that none of my friends watch Nikita or they at least know about the show. I don’t really remember it being aired on any major Engslih network. But according to a quick Google search, it is gonna be aired from 15th November, 2012 at 0410AM. :D Who the hell is going to watch the show then! :D

  • John A

Kind of does proof Nikita is popular somewhere. When a US show flops internationaly it normally isnt aired again or is moved to like 2am.

  • Joseph

Emily Flopwens is definitely going to be canceled. I hope Flopkita, i mean Nikita survives, it’s a great show!

  • Bizarro

Please CW move Nikita to tuesdays so Nikita fans can shut up, I’m getting tired of them bashing Supernatural and Hart when they rate higher than them!

  • Sarah moss

The new CW show Emily Owens and Beauty and the beast are ugly and boring with bad actors. Should be deleted!
