Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 28, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.34
Emily Owens, M.D.  0.54
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.77
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.12
Supernatural      1.18
Arrow      1.66
Vampire Diaries      1.88

Ratings for freshman drama Emily Owens, M.D. started low, and went even lower in its second week. It's now likely to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

So what happens if Nikita hits a 0.1? Is it really still safe then?

It won’t the hardcode fan base is whats left.
What i dont get is repeats were getting same as new ratings.
we need to see if DVr numbers increase alot.

For those who are intertested in Nikita’s popularity in China, according to Baidu it’s currently the seventh most popular US show in China.

    The top ten shows are:

    1. The Vampire Diaries
    2. The Walking Dead
    3. The Big Bang Theory
    4. Supernatural
    5. Gossip Girl
    6. Arrow
    7. Nikita
    8. Grey’s Anatomy
    9. Friends
    10. 2 Broke Girls

(The ranking will be constantly changing based on popolarity)

  • Kavyn

Despite being a Nikita fan, I think it would be ridiculous to renew an American show based on it’s popularity in China.

  • PV

@Arrow I can’t see why CW would renew B&B and not HoD, HoD is closer to syndication and they’re both low rated (And HoD seems more consistent, B&B lost half of its audience in only 3 episodes) Also 90210 is doing worse than both so far. I don’t see why B&B would get a second season and move to die on fridays.

    The Carrie Diaries / Cult

    Hart Of Dixie

    The Vampire Diaries

Americans Next Top Model/90210 (final season)
    Nikita (final season)

Except for TVD,Arrow and Supernatural:The rest of the shows should end at the end of the current season.

    My guess:

Cancellation: Emily Owens M.D., Gossip Girl and Nikita. Renewal: Beauty and the Beast, Arrow, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie and 90210

  • Scott

Emily Owens needs to be replaced with another show STAT! Smug Justin Hartley needs the night off to catch up on Arrow reruns

Gustavo, that’s ridiculous. No networks cancel all but three shows, certainlly no small, young, struggling CW who couldn’t put more than 5 new shows for this season.
Del, I agree with you and thank you for saying cw will/should continue with a few young woman demographic shows & that they can’t alienate thier audience that watch the girly shows-like me,I’m a in the target demo of W18-34& watch ANTM,GG,HoD,90210,VD & B&B.I also think the superhero, supernatrual popularity will fade quickly now.
    Right now I see this:
Bubble:HoD,Nikita,B&B,(I’m not sure syndication & China popularity can save Nikita again).
    Cancelled:Emily Owens(it’s a ok show)

  • KT

I’ve watched the EOMD pilot and a half of another episode, and that show is painful to watch. I used to watch Grey’s when it first premiered (before everyone and their mother got into it), and EOMD has way too many similarities to Grey’s, except it’s not even half as good.

  • KT

Meanwhile, I LOVE Hart of Dixie and will be pissed if it’s cancelled come May.

  • Julio

Emily Owens is a pretty good show! I do not understand why CW does this to their pilot year after year. I think they need to nice Hod and EOMD to Monday and stupid GG 90210 to Tuesday!! I know its a long shot but I will watch what ever is left of EOMD!

  • Nikki

That JC speaks a lot of truth.. i disagree with a bit but whoever that is has some really good points. i guess they come across better, since yas dont attack him. But anyways.. im not suprised it is going to be cancelled, so should Beauty, and Nikita but it seems thats may not happen even though it deserves it. The only show that should get another shot is Arrow. It seems to do okay with ratings.. people seem to like it not a lot of people i know but. And i still think its very dry, and has terrible writing and acting. But thats just me. We will see i guess. Im more concerned with Parenthood.. i really hope that gets another season. Love that show.

  • Mike

Since I could care less about Nikita I’ll ask about another show:

Why is Beast predicted “toss up” when its neck-and-neck with Supernatural? I know Supernatural has that nice TNT syndication deal that Beast doesn’t have to tip things in its favor, but even ignoring that, both show’s ratings would normally put them at “Certain Renewal” wouldn’t they?

  • Bill Gorman

“Why is Beast predicted “toss up” when its neck-and-neck with Supernatural?”

While the Index shows the average, I do take the most recent ratings into account when predicting. Latest BATB rating 0.6, latest SN rating 0.7.

A tenth of a point for CBS shows is minor, for CW shows, it’s huge.

  • Sid

I wonder if The CW would ever consider giving Fridays back to the affiliates? Granted Monday isn’t doing so hot with 9O21O and Gossip Girl either but that can easily change with a crop of new shows.

I really enjoyed 9O21O during S1-3 but the show has completely collapsed(story-wise). It’s easily the worst written scripted drama on air IMHO. I’m still watching but I honestly wouldn’t miss it if CW decides to end it after this season.
