Ratings for freshman drama Emily Owens, M.D. started low, and went even lower in its second week. It's now likely to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Carmen,the reason they’re not saying Nikita will be cancelled is because it’s close to syndication & they predicted wrong last year,saying it would be cancelled but it was renewed.

  • Tessa

    I wonder if the CW people realize why the slot after TVD is a death-slot and why no show can retain TVD’s numbers. The idea of retention is that the people who watch the earlier show stay to watch the later show. What the CW fails to understand is that the VD fans most likely run off to go online and connect/chat with each other once an episode finishes airing. They are probably “full of feels!!!111″ and want to express themselves to each other. If you’re a huge fan of a show and have been waiting all week to watch an episode it’s very unlikely that after that episode airs you’d want to mix up your feelings with an episode of a lesser show. Fandoms don’t operate like that.

    However I wonder what would happen if the CW took the rout they took with Supernatural to strengthen a new show. Meaning put the newer show before TVD instead of after. Chances are those fans waiting for their vampires will catch a few minutes of the new show and if it’s interesting enough they might show up early to watch both shows. This way they still can go off and chat to their heart’s desire after TVD ends and the new show can get some backwards retention off of them.

    @agnes
    They should cancel a show in the middle of the pack and replace it with the one that is dead last on the network and already dying on Fridays? This is your idea of cutting out “dead weight?” Up the dosage.

    @PHIL
    Actually, shows become more expensive as they age, not less, largely due to the legally mandated increases in cast salaries.

    @cam
    ‘i’m still upset that they canceled The Secret Circle when the ratings were considered good for the CW, now they have a string of flops.’

    I’m no expert but I’m guessing that CW execs may have considered the terrible retention rate and the huge drop in ratings throughout the season.

    kinda shocked ‘SID’ was a sockpuppet. Well all Nikita fans do it here i guess.

    Wow, I am shocked about Sid as well.

    Anyways, Tessa, that is a very good point: putting a show on BEFORE a hit show like TVD might work. I mean, I think with a show like Supernatural, you don’t have to worry, it already has it’s own established fanbase that are going to be sticking around. But yea, for new shows, it would make more sense in a way for them to lead into the older show, because you are right: a show like TVD is going to have fans that want to hit Tumblr and gif making and fanboards right after, rather than stick around for a new show they haven’t invested in yet.

    Just not sure how much of that Nielson base is made up of those kinds of fans, but I think that’s a really good point.

  • Zach

    I would be willing to bet that when Emily Owens finishes its 13 episodes it is replaced by Oh Sit or Breaking Pointe. Probably the former. Everyone is talking about Cult being on Tuesdays but it would be so incompatible with Hart of Dixie. At least Oh Sit has a lighter tone. Also Pedowitz wants more hours of original programming and putting cult on Tuesdays would mean repeats of something on Fridays. I predict BATB gets a pity pick up for a full season and moves to Fridays while Cult airs after the Vampire Diaries.

  • scifi

    Beauty and the beast already nearly 0.5. Secret Circle was canceled because hitting 0.5 only 2 times and it happened in may. So BATB will be canceled for sure.

  • scifi

    Supernatural will not be canceled without finale season.

  • Vance

    @Tessa, I think the major problem with Thursdays at 9 for the CW is actually Grey’s Anatomy, which would be a death star for the CW’s most heavily female skewing shows. I have seen comments that suggest an overlap between TVD and GA’s audience too, and wouldn’t be surprised if TVD dropped to under 1.0 if it had to go up against GA.

  • Morgan Wick

    If Nikita gets renewed, does your search box say “Nikita Ratings” next season?

  • Aaliyah

    It was just a waste of time. Emily Owens, Hart of Dixie, & another show are getting canceled. They should’ve renewed The Secret Circle!!!

  • DougF

    So does the CW pulling a new episode for a behind the scenes episode of Top Model during sweeps mean the Cancellation Bear has caught Nikita’s scent?

  • Brandy

    Nikita 2.5 Swords edge has been postponed in favor of a behind the scenes Top Model episode on Nov. 16 according to Spoilertv.Preempting during sweeps,not a good sign for Nikita.
    Aaliiyah, SC was cancelled several months ago, please move on!Also, SC was underperforming in its timeslots and wasn’t doing well enough internationally or online to justify renwal, it didn’t have good ratings(especially considering its leadin),had bad retention from VD,lost a lot of viewers from pilot to finale & it didn’t make enough money for CW to renew it.Hart of Dixie got renewed with same ratings last year,so it may get renewed again.But, if Arrows stays a hit,they may not be kind to the low or middling rated shows this year.Youre right,Emily Owens will be cancelled as well as maybe Nikita ,90210-but both might return next season-& maybe Hart,Beauty& Beast(unless it stays at 0.6-0.7 for the rest of the season but it’s unlikely).Last year, ended/cancelled 5 shows, they’ll Likley cancel that many again.You don’t know for sure whatll get cancelled til upfronts-example :last year everyone said Hart would fall to 0.4 in spring or would be cancelled but guess what?It was the third highest rated show for last weeks of the season, stayed stable at 0.5-0.6 & was renewed.Also ,last season99% of people (myself included) said Nikita would be cancelled but guess what?it was renewed.

  • Ariadne

    CW has to realise that the only show that can survive after TVD ia a show that is either TVD after-episode-focuse or a TVD spin-off! Anything else will die after TVD due to the passinate TVD fanbase and they obsession with their show and they need to discuss every new episode!

    @Vance i think TVD would hold steady while competing with GA because let’s admit it
    1.GA right now is complete train-wreck
    2.It will for sure loose some audience due to its dropping quality
    3.Shonha Rhimes(Or whatever)exits the show
    4.Many fan favorite characters will also exit
    5.And you can already see how much audience GA lost.

    Plus,sp far TVD is off to a better start than any other tv show and season 4 seems to be absolutely amazing!

  • Brandy

    Bill or Robert,has a network preemted a episode during sweeps before?Preempted an episode and not cancelled that show?What do make of Nikita being Preempted on Nov 16 for Top Model?

  • Restless

    @Tessa
    Interesting idea, but didn’t work all that well with Nikita/Supernatural combo. And there’s double the viewers for Arrow than Supernatural. We can’t tell how many Supernatural viewers also watch Arrow, but obviously a lot of Arrow viewers don’t watch Supernatural. Not saying Supernatural doesn’t help, but Arrow seems to be standing on it’s own too. So I’m not sure there’s really any solid facts to back up the idea that a show on before TVD would do any better than the shows after. CW can show promos for the show coming on after to try to entice viewers to stick around; I imagine showing promos for the show on before would be less effective.
    I’m also doubtful there’s that many fans that have to rush off to talk about episodes online, even on the CW, that it’s killing new shows. Online fandom is a very small percentage of viewers.

    I agree more with Vance, though I don’t watch any of these shows, I think it’s safer to assume they’re not counter programming enough. Beauty and the Beast are up against Grey’s and Person of Interest; I imagine Grey’s and Beauty’s relationship drama lovers overlap and any detective mystery watchers might choose POI over the Beast. The two selling points of the show are covered by older, bigger shows. Vampire Diaries and Arrow, on the other hand, are mostly up against comedies.
    Then again, with cable they’re all up against a lot more. :P So I dunno how much that affects things either. But it seems more likely to me than fans rushing off to chat online, honestly.

    Don’t know x3.

  • John A

    Hopefully its cut to 13 episodes. Nikita is the most overrated trash on tv.
