Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-October 28, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.34
Emily Owens, M.D.  0.54
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.77
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.12
Supernatural      1.18
Arrow      1.66
Vampire Diaries      1.88

Ratings for freshman drama Emily Owens, M.D. started low, and went even lower in its second week. It's now likely to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

First off, my idea didn’t work for Nikita because Nikita was already in its second season when it was paired with Supernatural. Nikita is a highly serialized show so I doubt anyone was able to pick it up in season 2.

Secondly, I wasn’t implying that Arrow was relying on Supernatural for its ratings. Still it probably didn’t hurt. Since everything failed after TVD I thought maybe the networks should look at the “before” factor. You have a point about the promos. But I don’t think you’re right in dismissing the online presence of the fans, especially not the generation that watched TVD. Heck a lot of them watch the show online and even if they don’t belong to the fandom, they might go online (or on their cellphones/pads) just to chat with their bffs about their heartthrobs.

I think the one thing we all can agree on is the competition. 9 pm is a tough slot because a lot of the networks air their top rated dramas there. That alone should give the CW incentive to shove the steady TVD there and put the more vulnerable new show before it.

    @John A

You’re actually quite a decent poster when you’re not making comments like that, some of the points you make on the cable topics are quite intelligent.

Anyway pity about Emily Owens, not a fan personally but did think after watching House that they should of done a Chase M.D spinoff show on Fox, or another network willing to take a chance. It probably would of done alright.

  • John A

@The End sometimes it gets annoying seeing so many comments about a show that pulls a 0.2 for new episode. And Nikita fans bash every other show on CW. Crap show with an annoying fanbase.

  • Charlie

    Don’t care about anything else

  • Vance

Next week, Beauty And The Beast will not pull better than 0.5.

  • The End

    @John A

Best not to care what the average CW fan thinks. Unless they’re being constructive, you’re best just skimming their comments. That said I made a mistake responding to someone attacking my post recently on here, so I guess I was being a little hypocritical there, it was my first such error though lol.

I think CW will do like last year and cancel& end five shows.Gossip Girl is ending, as much as I like Beauty& Beast and though I do like Emily Owens,Im pretty sure they’ll be cancelled. That leaves Hart of Dixie,Nikita,Cult and Carrie Diaries to battle it out for last two cancellations. aright now VD,SPN,arrow are certain renewals.Nikita and 90210 are hard to guess, ii could see both coming back for final seasons(90210 a short one,Nikita full to get syndication numbers) but could also see them wrapping up/ending this season as there’s plenty of time to write a proper finale and ratings are terrible.

  • John A

@The End I know that but sometimes its fun to stear it with them. It makes for a good laugh. Still not as fun as last year though Bondoel must not have come back.

  • Bizarro

I think Carrie Diaries will probably be cancelled because its moving in a tough night for the CW and has a horrible lead in. Cult will we have to see and Nikita will probably moved in the summer since ANTM is doing well and the CW will not air Nikita the next season because the CW knows that the show is making them look cheap and like a joke. We will have to wait till January for B&tB, I think it might be moved in Fridays because of Cult, since its not doing to well with TVD. So the CW will shove it to friday and see how it does for a few episodes. I like M.D. too but I’m 99.9% sure that it will be cancelled.

  • KS

I don’t really know how successful CW is this season, but all I can say as of now is, moving Supernatural to Wednesday is a good idea.

  • Bizarro

Since ANTM did well in the summer for the CW and airing the 4th season for Nikita only during the summer.

  • Dude

But it skews older males and would probably perform well on a network catering that demographic. It also performs extremely well internationally.

  • KS

Also, of the five shows only Arrow and Cult shows some promise and I believe only they would be successful.

  • Frank

Supernatural’s ratings have always been higher than Nikita’s…

  • Jack

Does the CW do a two year renewal?? (For Supernatural)

  • Mrc8310

Is Arrow going to be coming back for season 2 next fall

  • mike

They should try comedy again. Aliens in America was hilarious. Wasn’t Reba one of their highest rated shows?

  • Moe

I’m still kind of bummed out that Supernatural adjusted down this week. I know, Chicago game plus east coast issues. But still, I was really happy with that .9!

Does anyone think that Supernatural is in any danger? I know pretty much every show the CW has is worse off than Supernatural (minus TVD and Arrow, of course!) but I know Bill (or is it Robert) touts the whole “age of a show” being a factor in renewal, and I worry that the CW might think Supernatural isn’t worth it even though it’s their #3 show and dump it for next season.

  • Lucas

I don’t really care if Nikita is going bad and isn’t earning the CW anything. I am a HUGE fan of Nikita, in my opinion, it’s one of the best shows airing now, so I want more and more! If they want to renew it, they have their reasons and I’m pretty ok with it. :)

  • RS

SPN just invested in a new show-runner, and both leads have signed on for another two years. That may not alleviate all “it’s getting old” economic problems, but I think we can rely on the ratings in this case.
