A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the NHL has cancelled the 2013 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.

Might as well just cancel the whole season now, since nothing else is going to matter to fans.

  • Chris

Why couldn’t the NHL wait until it cancels that day’s games before axing the Winter Classic? Odds are, that day’s games would probably be canceled if the lockout continues into late November/early December, so why now and not then?

  • Joseph

If the entire NHL season is canceled, I suspect that the league will go out of business, since if the owners make a final offer, it may be with an ultimatum: Accept Our Offer Or We’ll Shut Down The LeagueForever.

And the acrimonious NHL talks are a preview of what will happen in Washington over the “fiscal cliff”: When Congress reconvenes on November 13th, they may decide to immediately adjourn until January and stay away until January.

“One day before the NHL would be required to pay the University $250,000 per the payment schedule agreed upon between the University and the NHL, the NHL canceled the event, according to the Associated Press. Because of the date of the cancellation, the University will be owed $100,000.”

Any word what NBC is going to do to fill for the local affiliates during that time period? Going head to head with the bowl games.

This is terrible for the NHL. The league lost a lot of media and fans after the last lockout. It’s the end of hockey as we know it. Contraction will come and less people will care. Hockey is on its way to becoming irrelevant.

  • Steve

I think the Winter Classic was their highest rated game (even more than Stanley Cup) and thus, their biggest money maker. It will be hard to bounce back from losing their season’s cash cow.

CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada … will it feature junior teams? I wouldn’t mind seeing Ottawa 67s @ Sudbury Wolves and in the late game Prince George Cougars @ Kelowna Rockets tomorrow night. How about it CBC? Most of the junior teams don’t get regular tv coverage and would probably love to fill the schedule gap the NHL has created.

O yeah, Gary Bettman still needs to be fired. Soon. Very, very soon.

Yawn – who cares about hockey?
