Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

VD hit a 2.1 in season 4′s premier. VD is insanely good this year. More people need to start watching this show.
@Vcoolwater
I disagree..Hart of Dixie is one of the steadiest series on the CW. Does it pull huge numbers? No..but atleast the CW knows what it’s going to get ratings wise with each episode. Plus the fact its most likely one of the least expensive shows on the network. I can easily see the CW sticking with this show for atleast another season or 2.
@Percysowner
It either means less people are watching later (more watching live,) or less people are watching period
.
FOX has nothing in the top 25. Funny, proves that their audience watches live and probably don’t own DVR’s (middle America).
@Devin: “I would love to see season to date Live+7DVR numbers for the new shows. That is such a better indicator than live TV numbers. You can’t look at only live TV anymore. Few people watch it live anymore. Technology has changed that.”
Well, when advertisers start paying for a full week of DVR viewing instead of the 3 days they do now, TVBTN might start using L+7 for their predictions. Until then, they will continue using L+SD since they’ve been shown to be a pretty close match to C+3 in terms of shows’ relative standing for that network. Even then, I’d imagine the L+SD would still be pretty good for comparison purposes. Doing a quick comparison of NBC’s L+SD and L+7 figures for the shows that made it to this list*, the only major changes were that Grimm looks better and SVU looks a bit worse. The others all had L+7 index numbers pretty much in line with their L+SD ones.
*not ideal, but the best I could do, and the shows on here pretty much cover the entire NBC ratings spectrum
“FOX has nothing in the top 25. Funny, proves that their audience watches live”
Which for Fox is a good thing, because advertisers don’t pay for any commercial viewing beyond day 3.
“and probably don’t own DVR’s (middle America).”
Please don’t bring nonsense claims around here without the data to back it up, or you’ll be mocked. Like now.
Probably this mean that Fox has nothing good right now!
@Tessa I know. I just remember that the first 3 episodes did really well in the demographic and then Bitten dropped and Blood Brothers went back up some. So these numbers are from when a fair amount of people were watching live. I have mixed feelings on this season. I’m one of the people who is very unhappy with the trajectory of the Sam storyline and I am seeing complaints about it in several places. OTOH, I want the series to run a long time. I hope the ratings go back up and we hold on for the next 2 seasons. I’m pretty sure we will, I just hope there is some course correction after mid-season.
Again the only “reality” show on these lists was The Voice…perhaps as its on during football and the dreaded DWTS. The networks need to figure out how to make the DVR’s work for them so good shows don’t get canned!!!
terrible bad for 90210, arrow, supernatural none in the list
very good for Scandal, Nashville, Elementary
For the most part, even if DVR viewers counted as much as live viewers, the cancellations would be very similar.
I mean, look at the T5: Modern Family, Revolution, BBT, Grey, Once are all superstars for their networks.
That said, yay for Revenge. Which is very likely for renewal already anyway.
This is the week that Fox had baseball every night.
I’m disappointed that Supernatural isn’t on here so we could know their numbers, but their live numbers were so high for episodes 2 and 3, that it makes sense that their percentage increase from their original rating (1.0) to their final rating (say their average 1.4), wouldn’t put them on the list. Look at Nikita: it’s on the list even though it only went up .2 points (.3 to .5), because the percentage increase was actually 67%.
I still wish we knew what they went up to. But the one that really counts is the 1.0 rating for the same day score.
Interesting that Nikita is performing at the same level as last season at this time with the DVR ratings now. Wow! a 1.9 for TVD is great. I agree i would say Heart of Dixie is staying around for now.
Yeah, but it doesn’t matter, does it? No one that matters cares about these numbers. Although, it does my heart good to see “Last Resort” in Last Place. That show is just something that makes me disgusted as someone who loves this country.
