4.7 Million People Tune in to Part of NGC’s First Original Broadcast of a Feature Film Inspired by Real-Life Events

(WASHINGTON, D.C. — November 5, 2012) National Geographic Channel’s Sunday night premiere of the true-to-life full-length action thriller SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden became a must-see blockbuster hit, with stellar ratings that averaged a whopping 1.4 P25–54 on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The special now ranks as the network’s #1 show of 2012, and sixth highest rated broadcast of all time for NGC. It encores on Friday, November 9, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden scored a 2.2 HH rating, 1.4 in the P25–54 demo and 1.9 for M25–54. The P25–54 is more than four times NGC’s Sunday 8–10 p.m. ET/PT average for the 2012 television season (.3 P 25–54).

SEAL Team Six averaged 2.7 million persons 2+ over the entire two-hour premiere, with more than 4.7 million total viewers 2+, including 2.2 million viewers in the key P25–54 demo, tuning in to at least six minutes of the film.

This ranks as the highest rated telecast on NGC since the premiere of George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview in August 2011, which had a 1.7 P 25–54, and eclipses the previous two-hour special record for 2012 of Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron, which had a .9 P 25–54 rating in April.

The film, hailed by critics as “gripping” and “an exciting drone-and-dagger film that generates a ridiculous amount of suspense,” was executive produced by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, and directed by John Stockwell (“Into the Blue,” “crazy/beautiful”).

“We are overwhelmed that viewers across the country responded en masse to this socially relevant, factually based and entertaining film that highlighted the real inside story behind the manhunt for bin Laden and the heroes in our military and intelligence agencies,” said David Lyle, CEO National Geographic Channels. “It proved that no matter who Americans are planning to vote for, a good film is a good film, and we are happy to have had such success with our first original broadcast of a feature film inspired by real-life events.”

“What National Geographic Channel, CEO David Lyle and President Howard Owens did was offer a captivating film of recent American history to as many homes as possible,” said Weinstein. “We expect SEAL Team Six to be a perennial for the National Geographic Channel and hope more people watch it this Friday.”

“If this film had been in theaters this weekend, it very likely could have been the #1 movie in America,” added NGC President Howard Owens. “The success of this premiere would not have been possible without Harvey’s driving force and support for this film and our network.”

SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden is the story behind the manhunt and raid that took down al-Qaeda’s notorious leader, told through the eyes of the military and intelligence teams involved. The blockbuster stitches together a taut, no-holds-barred account that builds from an intense interrogation of an al-Qaeda functionary to a dangerous on-the-ground surveillance of a mysterious 6'5" bearded figure in a strangely fortified compound to the heroic culmination of the mission code-named “Project Neptune’s Spear.” The film envisions the behind-the-scenes wrangling that went into that decision, the work of the intelligence community and local nationals in Pakistan who aided the mission, as well as the Special Forces who demonstrated their skills in entering a chaotic, dangerous environment while seeking out America’s number-one target and enemy.

I’m pretty sure Rush Limbaugh’s head just exploded. Heh heh.

  • Wowzers

One of the most boring tv movies I have ever seen. All the hoopla NatGeo CEO, David Lyle, is spewing up top there is him trying to justify paying Weinstein a truckload of cash for a substandard propaganda film. Make no mistake, this IS a propaganda film. If it wasn’t, the director would not have shown bin Laden with a gun. Reports say he was unarmed when the seals shot him.

I wish I was one of the 2.2 million people who watched about 6 minutes then turned the channel. What a waste of time.

  • Derrick

ignorant republicans call everything they dont agree with as propaganda.

  • Wowzers

Not everyone on Earth is American. Why don’t you just comment on the film like a grown-up instead of trying to pick a fight.

  • wowser

Actually He had a gun on his hand, he JUST do not choose to fire..!! Unarmed?!! Really!!?

  • The Watcher

I’m just glad the SOB is GONE!
Never mind the details, dead is dead.

I have read that there are a whole lot of factual errors in this film. Things are portrayed that just plain did not take place.

NATGEO has lost prestige in my mind – stick to animals because you sure don’t get history correct.

I hope you’re not just repeating what you saw in the movie. If so, you are gravely misinformed. Please take a moment to google the following phrase:

    “Osama bin Laden unarmed”

You will see an ocean of articles on this subject. You can also read the book “No Easy Day” by Mark Owen which is “the only first hand account of the Navy Seal mission that killed Osama bin Laden.” Owen reveals that bin Laden had no weapon on him when the SEALs shot him. Now please google the following:

“Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949″

Open the first link and scroll down to Article 41: Safeguard of an enemy hors de combat. This is part of the addition to Protocol I of the Geneva Convention from 1977.

After that, please read this article written by Chibli Mallat of Harvard Law School wherein he explains “hors de combat” and how it applies to the cold blooded and completely illegal murder of bin Laden. Mallet concludes Barack Obama is guilty of breaching international law. That article is found by googling:

“The Geneva Conventions and the Death of Osama Bin Laden”

    Choose the first link.

Now, after reading all that, come back to this forum and tell me “SEAL Team Six” is not a propaganda film. I’ll be surprised if you do.

Anyway, nobody is commenting on the movie itself. How can this have been watched by so many people? Only 2 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and nothing at all on Metacritic (it’s not even listed). Looking at NatGeo article “Raid on Bin Laden” by Alison Walsh, all I see is a slew of angry comments made BEFORE it even aired and not a single one posted AFTER it aired. So what does all this tell you? Are the ratings numbers “massaged” perhaps?

Regardless, ST6 is the epitome of “failure.” Everyone involved should bury their heads in the sand and never resurface – especially David Lyle and Harvey Weinstein.

An Obama promotion conveniently aired 2 days before the election. How obvious can it be? Obama blames Bush for everything and gives him no credit for creating the systems that made this all possible. NatGeo is in the bag for the Dems. No surprise there!

  • Joon Yi

Some of you guys are saying Osama was unarmed…

Over 3000 people that died on those planes were unarmed, including women and children

I’m dead that SOB is dead. In my opinion we should have brought him back and tortured his ass until he died

As a Canadian I look at Romney and the republican party supporters as ignorant, flag waving, gun pointing moronic, bullies. Stupidity must be your party platform. Just look at the idiots that represent your ideals. Limbaugh, Henasey, Palin, O`Brien, Bachman, Beck, Rove, Paul OMG, I could go on and on. Is it any wonder why your country is so messed up. I can`t understand why the poorest states support these dummies. You need a 3rd party to address the needs of all Americans… to keep your political system honest. The rich and big US Corporate interests will be your down fall. Capitalism and Imperialism is going down… Take a lesson from the Roman empire…Your country is DOOMED.
