If the CW follows the pattern they’ve used the last several seasons, they’ll cancel 2 shows in addition to Gossip Girl’s announced exit, so they can premiere 3 new shows next Fall. Even with the Mark Pedowitz talk of more investment in programming, I don’t think they try and premiere 4 new shows in the Fall, and premiering just 2 new Fall shows is just as unlikely considering all his public chatter.

Emily Owens, M.D. is now certain to be canceled, but several scenarios could determine the second cancellation.

  • Does 90210 get a short final season? (currently, I assume it will)
  • Is Nikita on the Fall, 2013 schedule? (while I predict Nikita renewal for syndication purposes, I'm not certain it goes into the Fall, 2013 schedule)
  • If Cult or Carrie Diaries survives (who knows), each survival adds one to the number of Fall shows that would need to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

“I actually think Nikita, and not 90210, will be getting the final season treatment next year.”

Don’t get me wrong, Nikita’s fourth season may very well be pre-announced as its final one.

And it would not surprise me if 90210 doesn’t get a final season and instead is canceled this season. I’m just guessing at that based on recent CW practice.

  • Terry

Emily Owens is a fun, quirky show so its sad that it will get cancelled.

As for Supernatural, it should be moved to Tuesdays at 9pm,and would be counter-programming against CBS procedurals and the comedy blocks of other networks.

  • TVDude

While its ratings are on the lower end I think HoD is more likely to be renewed than canceled. The night its on is always one that struggles so whatever CW tosses there probably won’t do any better. The same can’t be said for B&TB, Nikita or even 90210 (likely to return).

  • Percysowner

@Tommy and CBSviewer Jared and Jensen have announced that they are signed through season 10, the next 2 seasons, so I expect Supernatural will go at least that long. The actors have joked that hey would like to beat Smallville which would mean they would have to go to season 11. They have also joked about doing season 36 of Supernatural, so if the ratings are good, Supernatural may well go on longer than we would expect. If the CW believes it will be shutting down shop in 2016, it may be financially beneficial to the CW or rather to Warner Brothers to pay for Supernatural to go out with the network. I predict SPN going to season 10 and would not be surprised to see it hit season 11.

  • vcoolwater

I don’t know. I think you should wait until the spring before we make a decision about Hart of Dixie. I think ratings will dip next year.

The writers are determine to torture viewers with the stupid love triangle and now going to make it into a love pentagon. They already casting a new love interest for Zoe next year. I have given up on the show.

  • John A

90210 renewed? Come on 0.4 by the end of the season it will be at 0.2.

  • DonnaT

Tommy, JA and JP re-upped through S10 and Jeremy Carver has said that he an “arc” planned through S10, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he can’t write “a new Chapter” IF The CW is still around in 2016/2017.

Vance, I tend to agree with you. The three shows that replaced SPN on Thursdays all dropped substantially from their premiere ratings though IIRC Nitika held on longer before plunging more permanently. TVD and SPN have some crossover audience, that’s true, but SPN has proven to a really stable fan base that will follow the show anywhere it’s put on The CW schedule and it’s gone toe to toe with GA in the past and there’s much less demo conflict.

Both shows have hard core fans that want to jump online to chat as soon as their show is over; that’s not a problem for SPN at the later hour but it’s a greater problem for whatever show that follows TVD. Fans evidently are checking out whatever new show premieres after TVD but the rate of the “TVD/CW” fans that lose interest in subsequent episodes of the “new” shows is accelerating; B&TB lost nearly half its premiere demo in the second week and exactly half in its the third (last week). I don’t have my data at hand but I don’t think TSC dropped off so precipitously in its third week. A show in its eighth season (SPN) has retaken third place for the second week in a row.

I agree next year – assuming Arrow is used to launch a new series, IF The CW does try to launch three new series during Fall 2013 I think they would be better off taking one day, maybe Monday or Tuesday to launch two new somewhat compatible shows back to back and moving SPN back to Thursdays so The CW has at least one night that they count on to bring in solid ratings for the night; may not be the highest ratings (8-10) but solid.

    MIDSEASON:

    Monday:
    90210
    The Carrie Diariea

    Tuesday:
    Hart of Dixie
    Beauty and the Beast

    Wednesday:
    Arrow
    Supernatural

    Thursday:
    The Vanpire Diaries
    Cult

    Friday:
    Emily Owens, M.D.
    Nikita

90210′s fist season was really really good. Then they brought Rebecca Sinclair onboard to run the show season 2 and that’s where it started to have a different feel. Season 3 was a bit better than 2. And then season 4 was pretty predictable. I never thought it would make it to a fifth season but I wouldn’t be too sad to see it go now since the quality has gone way down since season 1.

I really don’t think they’ll cancel BATB. It can easily get a boost as it gets more loyal viewers. And it’s doing pretty good already comparatively. Plus chatter for it has been getting stronger. Also, it’s not as difficult or as expensive to produce as Secret Circle was. Honestly, 90210 needs to go. They will have all of the second half of the season to give it closure. They should give new shows a chance, especially ones like BATB that gain cult like viewers. I really think this new CW president thinks differently. Also, Cult is only going to be a 12 episode show PER season. So he can easily cut down one of the series to also being 12 episodes. Personally, ANTM should only be a summer show at this point, which would open up a Friday night slot. Nikita ratings are horrible, but I guess he could still give it a final season. I think they will cancel Emily Owens and 90210. It’s hard to say about Cult at this point or even Carrie Diaries. But I don’t see what’s wrong with replacing some of these older shows that don’t perform as well with shows that perform better. Give them time to end and move on. There’s plenty of time to end 90210, Nikita, Hart of Dixie, etc…

  • hammard

    @Mark
I was thinking the same schedule

  • Nikki

Knowing the CW and the way they make decisions..im guessing its gunna go like this.. Emily will get cancelled, the awful Heart of dixie will be renewed, so will VD and Supernatural. And Beauty will be cancelled as it should be its terrible no disagreement there. They will probably keep 90210 for a few extra episodes and call it quits and renew the god awful Nikita.. even though it should be cancelled. But thats the way the CW works…

  • melbye

I predict Nikita will not return on Friday on the Spring 2013 schedule

  • Bob

I really enjoy 90210. I normally wait to watch the season when the DVD’s come out. However, I had to watch the first episode on Amazon to find out what happened with the car crash from season 4…now I am good until Season 5 DVD’s arrive.

  • Randy

They should probably only keep the last 3 shows on the list (starting with Supernatural), and than for the other days, do more cbs & Disney Channel programming. You will see the ratings go up. On Sunday night, should have Warner Brother movie night.

  • CrimTV

    @CBSViewer

No way CW will premiere Cult on Monday following 90210!

  • PV

I will be pissed if Supernatural gets a 13 ep order for last season. The show deserves a 22 episode last season. It’s a good performer.

  • M

Personally, I think the CW should move TVD to 9pm (8pm CT) and put a new show before it (like Arrow before Supernatural). People want to talk about TVD nearly immediately afterwards and that’s why no one really wants to pay attention to a new show. Instead, why not have TVD be a lead-out, instead of a lead-in? A fan of the show might tune in early and catch this new show which in turn could ignite enough interest to watch the entire hour previous to TVD.

    Midseason 2013:

    Monday:
    90210
    The Carrie Diaries

    Tuesday:
    Hart of Dixie
    Beauty and the Beast

    Wednesday:
    Arrow
    Supernatural

    Thursday:
    The Vampire Diaries
    Cult

    Friday:
    Arrow (repeats)
    Nikita

    Fall 2013:

    Monday:
    90210 (final season)
    Hart of Dixie

    Tuesday:
    OPEN
    Supernatural

    Wednesday:
    Arrow
    OPEN

    Thursday:
    OPEN
    The Vampire Diaries

    Friday:
    OPEN
    OPEN

Returning: Arrow, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie, 90210 (final season); Nikita will either come back in the fall or be held for midseason/summer but it will get a S4. [I could see Nikita staying on Fridays IF they move Supernatural back to Fridays.] All the open spaces will be filled with new shows or returning bubble shows (like Cult/The Carrie Diaries/reality/repeats). The CW might be better off running at least one encore on Friday instead of worrying about trying to debut new programming.

  • dantas

No word on LA Complex yet?

  • Jon

Too bad for Emily Owens it’s actually starting to get good. It’s pilot was not that great, but it wasn’t a disaster. I’ve watched all 3 episodes, and I have to say the show is actually starting to interest me.
