Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 4, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.36
Emily Owens, M.D. :oops: 0.49
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.78
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.05
Supernatural :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 1.16
Arrow :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 1.59
Vampire Diaries :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 1.92

If the CW follows the pattern they’ve used the last several seasons, they’ll cancel 2 shows in addition to Gossip Girl’s announced exit, so they can premiere 3 new shows next Fall. Even with the Mark Pedowitz talk of more investment in programming, I don’t think they try and premiere 4 new shows in the Fall, and premiering just 2 new Fall shows is just as unlikely considering all his public chatter.

Emily Owens, M.D. is now certain to be canceled, but several scenarios could determine the second cancellation.

  • Does 90210 get a short final season? (currently, I assume it will)
  • Is Nikita on the Fall, 2013 schedule? (while I predict Nikita renewal for syndication purposes, I'm not certain it goes into the Fall, 2013 schedule)
  • If Cult or Carrie Diaries survives (who knows), each survival adds one to the number of Fall shows that would need to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Hoping most Cw shows get axed.

  • Bobby C

    Hoping for a miracle for Emily Owens. One can hope! I love her!

    At the end of this season, for me:

    NIKITA = renewed for summer or mid-season
    HART OF DIXIE = renewed
    GOSSIP GIRL = final season
    90210 = cancelled
    BEAUTY AND THE BEAST = cancelled
    EMILY OWEN MD = cancelled
    ARROW = renewed
    SUPERNATURAL = renewed
    TVD = renewed

    I find it odd when I read hate towards the Hart of Dixie. I must admit I was one of the first people to start watching it among my circle of family and friends. I’ve turned quite a few people onto it, and so far not one has told me they don’t like it, or that they have quit watching it.

    CW will never move TVD from 8pm.
    1- why fix something that isn’t broken. TVD already does well in its time slot and who knows if changing it won’t hurt it.

    2- CW needs to counter program at 9. if TVD moved to 9 it would have to compete with female skewing shows like glee and greys anatomy. CW needs a male skewing show at 9. preferably SPN or cult.

    i think if the beauty and the beast ratings gets worst the cw is gonna have to choose between beauty&best or emily owens for cancellation , i think if they’d cancelled beauty after it’s 12 episodes air they can replace it with cult in january. but if they canceled emily owens they’d have nothing to pair hart of dixe with on tuesdays there for i think b&theB will get canceled in late dec & emily owens will get a full season even with bad ratings and then be axed in may .

    It’s safe to say that Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and Arrow will be renewed. Hart of Dixie will likely too.
    Emily Owens, M.D. will be cancelled after it’s thirteenth episode run.
    If The Carrie Diaries and Cult bomb, Beauty and the Beast might have a chance on receiving a spot on the fall 2013 schedule.
    I’m hoping they’ll renew Nikita and give 90210 the boot.
    Maybe it would be a good thing if The CW premiered four new shows next fall instead of the usual three.

  • Nikki

    at M i said that last year about VD being a lead out instead of a lead in. I think if TSC aired before VD last year wed be watching it again this year.

  • Joseph

    Cancel Emily Flopwens already! it’s not working, period!

  • rob60990

    Please cancel Nikita. :D

  • Melanie

    Hart of Dixie is in an interesting position. Is the syndication factor so strong that we’re really talking about it being renewed for two seasons? Three and four? Because surely if Nikita was considered likely to be renewed for that reason, HOD with (marginally) better ratings will be too? (I know it won’t receive a 2 season pick-up but its the studio making that committment to try for 88 or cut its losses.)
    If Beauty & the Beast stabilizes where it is, it will probably get a second season.
    I think the CW will leave its Wed schedule alone – its working. They don’t need Arrow to launch new shows. They need new shows for Mon & Tues that can stand on their own like Arrow has. (so far)

    I think they should move BATB to Friday nights at 7 or 8 OR on Tuesday nights after Hart of Dixie. I think they will do relatively well Friday because a show like that usually gets the viewers to move with them. Moonlight, an urban fantasy show very similar to it, did fantastic there. That way if it does moderately well it will get a second season (CBS I’m sure will never hear the end of canceling Moonlight). It’s a cult type show and since Arrow was the big show this year, BATB would have a good chance this way. BATB is up against total beasts in its time slot now.

    Personally I think the schedule in the spring should look like:

    The Carrie Diaries
    90210 (final season; wrap it up by season’s end; the announcement coming before the new eps start in January)

    Hart of Dixie
    Emily Owens (unless they find a show to replace it mid-season); maybe they can even put BATB in this slot and run repeats of a show they’re trying to promote like Arrow, Cult, BATB or Carrie Diaries)

    The Vampire Diaries

    BATB OR a repeat of another show for promotion)

  • Bill Gorman

    @ Melanie, yep, a 3rd season renewal for HoD would almost demand a 4th.

  • Anon

    And that double-down factor for HoD makes me think it might be more susceptible to the axe than usual.

  • Matt

    Bring back Comedies like a Full House remake,One with maybe Barry Williams,Alan Thick and so on.

  • SPM

    Why did Pedowitz even think Emily Owens would be a hit? he is an imbecile of the highest order.

  • JJA

    Beauty & The Beast will be canceled.

    HOD will likely get its 3rd and 4th season. It’s this year’s Nikita, but it also does very well on iTunes each week.

    Given how GG season 6 is tanking, maybe the CW will get smart and end 90210 this year. Better to make the decision NOW and give the show closure.

    Mark Pedowitz should have bought the rights to “Girl Meets World”

    Boy Meets Word sequel!
