Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 4, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.36
Emily Owens, M.D. 0.49
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.78
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.05
Supernatural      1.16
Arrow      1.59
Vampire Diaries      1.92

If the CW follows the pattern they’ve used the last several seasons, they’ll cancel 2 shows in addition to Gossip Girl’s announced exit, so they can premiere 3 new shows next Fall. Even with the Mark Pedowitz talk of more investment in programming, I don’t think they try and premiere 4 new shows in the Fall, and premiering just 2 new Fall shows is just as unlikely considering all his public chatter.

Emily Owens, M.D. is now certain to be canceled, but several scenarios could determine the second cancellation.

  • Does 90210 get a short final season? (currently, I assume it will)
  • Is Nikita on the Fall, 2013 schedule? (while I predict Nikita renewal for syndication purposes, I'm not certain it goes into the Fall, 2013 schedule)
  • If Cult or Carrie Diaries survives (who knows), each survival adds one to the number of Fall shows that would need to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’ve never seen Nikita I can’t comment as far as the quality of the series..but what network is going to pick up syndication rights for the lowest rated drama in primetime? Nikita doesn’t seem like a series networks will be fighting over.

  • Mi

The CW will not give up on the TVD lead in, that and Arrow’s lead in are the best they have and they are going to debut new shows after them.

The smartest move would be to move SPN to Tuesdays at 9PM, it’s the only show that could do good in that timeslot and it’d have less competition than on Wednesdays at 9PM.

I think this is the strongest and most cohesive schedule for The CW next season IMO.

Really doubt Nikita will be canceled it was getting awful ratings last year and its still here so why would it be canned now when they only need one more season to syndication…..

Who knows though I mean this whole network besides a handful of shows are getting terrible ratings….

  • MarcJames87

Arrow is our biggest import from The CW. Numbers hit 1.8 million on our cable channel Sky 1 – Week Ending 28th Oct.

  • John A

Hope Cult and Carrie Diaries do well so Nikita will canceled.

  • Ben

CW needs to go with all superhero/scifi/supernatural type shows. They are the only ones that do really well for them.

  • Martine

Arrow is doing worse every week. It started high, but doesn’t that make any difference? Oh..I forgot, the CW doesn’t care if no one watches their shows. Eventually someone should just buy them out. That air time could go to something decent.

  • Brandy

GG ending,EOMD and Beauty & Beast are sure to be cancelled along up to two more shows-I think CW will cancel 4-5 shows,I think 4 as Arrows a hit and the rest of thier new shows so far aren’t doing great, last year they ended oth& cancelledRinger,SC,Framed,Remodeled,h8tr.I think Nikita might get renewed for syndication but Veronica Mars had three seasons, less than 88 episodes and is syndicated on SoapNet and Community I don’t think will have 88 episodes at season fours end but is gonna be syndicated on ComedyCentral so maybe Nikita gets cancelled this season while getting a minimal syndication deal. 90210i wouldn’t be surprised if it wraps up this season but also wouldn’t be shocked if it got a shortened 10-13episode final season.Hart of Dixie maybe renewed as long as it stays stable in ratings and continues doing well online and if Cult & Carrie Diaries bomb.

  • Kavyn

90210 does not even need a final season announcement. They can end the season however they want and it’ll be satisfying enough, unless if they decide to end the series with the entire cast on a boat party in which the boat begins to sink or something else just as ridiculous.

I’m hoping the final season of Nikita has to do with rebelling against the CIA, forcing Nikita, Alex, etc (including Amanda) to work together and fight off the CIA’s attempts at killing them off. The procedural thing really isn’t my cup of tea this season, but the episodes have gotten better since the season 3 premiere.

  • Kavyn

@Jared You’d be surprised. Anything can be sold for syndication. There are thousands of networks, and shows get sold internationally too. Just because Nikita isn’t a hit doesn’t mean it won’t do well in reruns. I’m sure the CW will use international popularity and good reviews for the first couple of seasons as selling points, and honestly the show speaks for itself. Networks akin to USA I’m sure would find an interest in Nikita :)

  • Nick

    CW 2013-2014 schedule:

    8: The Carrie Diaries
    9: 90210 (10 episode final season)

    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    8: Arrow
    9: Amazon (new)

    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Selection (new)

    8: Hart of Dixie
    9: Nikita (full final season)

    Beauty & The Beast
    Emily Owens, MD

Due to the fact that ANTM was removed from the schedule, only 3 out of EOMD, BATB, 90210, Cult, and TCD have to be cancelled.

  • Edward

I think that Beauty & The Beast will not be cancelled. They’re doing better than TSC did last year so far. For me, Hart of Dixie and Emily Owens will be cancelled.

  • Kavyn

What? TSC started dropping in the Spring. BTB is doing WAAAAY worse than TSC was last year lol.

  • Brandy

Karyn, why would they give oth,& Gg final shortened seasons but 90210?Yes it’s ratings are bad, but so were GG and Nikita’s yet they were renewed.Mark Pedowitz said last May about GG final season”I believe in giving long running shows a proper farewell”.Also, Bill and Robert believe 90210 will get a short final season, see cw renwal/cancel index 2012 number2 90210 would be cancelled elsewhere but expect a final short season on CW.Also, yes 90210 will have more than 100 episodes needed for syndication but more episodes is better and more money from Netflix. Also, CW can’t afford to cancell more than 5 shows and GG ending ,EO& Beauty will be cancelled that leaves little room for Hart of Dixie,Cult,Carrie Diaries to fight for last cancellations.Plus,90210has done well in DVr,w18-34,internationaly, DVD/merchandise sales and will be the only second CW series to get 100 episodes & it’s very Likley to be the second CW original show syndicated(I expect it to get a deal)& it’s had the third highest premiere on CW only beaten or come close by VD and Arrow. Also, usually when it’s final season for a show ithey announce it before the season starts not halfway through-Weeds,House,DH,GG,OTH,Sparticus,Treme’,Big C,to name a few examples of this.

  • Adrian

I remember last year the CW’s renew/cancel index would get like 20 pages of comments every week… good times.

Anyway, it is funny to see Nikita likely to be renewed with those ratings but there’s no way it won’t get a fourth season. Those episodes will be produced and aired even if it is during the summer at 2 AM.

90210 will get a final season, there’s no reason for it not to, especially since the new shows are doing horrible too.

As for HOD, the ratings are not good but if the CW was ok with renewing Nikita with 0.4s to get it to 88 episodes, they will surely do the same with HOD.

  • Richard Steven Hack

I predict BATB will continue to drop and be axed by the end of its run. It’s just not good enough to maintain its ratings. Arrow is better done and if they don’t screw up should maintain ratings north of the usual .5-.8 CW ratings.

I also predict Cult will “die very badly” based on the premise and the cast.

There’s your two shows besides Owens.

Nikita might or might not be moved to a summer show. That will probably depend on what kind of pilots they see this season. It won’t be a short summer season, though, because they need the syndication episodes. So you’re looking at 22 or 23 episodes (like last season) this season and probably a split season totaling 20-22 episodes in season four, giving a total of 88-89 episodes.

They might even go for a shortened 13-episode summer season five! Why? For the same reason Fringe got another season: more episodes enhances the syndication revenue, up to a point presumably where it doesn’t.

I agree with Kavyn that Nikita will probably do very well in international syndication, especially in Asia. I can’t think of any other reason why the CW would renew it last season other than that.

  • Tom

One of the underlying problems with any scheduling changes is that the CW has developed such a a bad reputation for programming that potential viewers aren’t going to stick around long to see if a show improves. Right now, Arrow is the only new show on the CW with any chance of success. However, in typical CW fashion, the last several episodes have not been nearly as focused as the first three and, accordingly, the ratings have already dropped a bit. Moreover, by continuing to run low rated shows like Hart, Beauty, Nikita and The LA Complex, the CW has pretty much indicated that it’s content with failure. Face it, keeping a show like Nikita on for two additional seasons purely for syndication purposes is just plain embarrassing. So, I’m finally coming to the conclusion that the CW simply isn’t committed enough to creating quality programming to survive longer than two or three more broadcasting seasons.

  • Nick

House’s final season was announced 2-4 months before the last episode aired. You can’t use that example.

  • Kavyn

90210 might not get it’s final season if Cult and TCD do well. If one (or both) flop then 90210 will get it’s final season. But it doesn’t *need* one based on how the show is written. Gossip Girl didn’t need one either but got it because The CW was hoping it would get ratings similar to OTH, which it doesn’t.

Thus 90210 doesn’t *need* to have a final season, and it won’t help it’s ratings as noted by Gossip Girl. I also highly doubt HOD is going anywhere considering it’s the most stable show on the CW right now and doing better than half the cw line up.
