Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 4, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.36
Emily Owens, M.D. 0.49
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.78
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.05
Supernatural      1.16
Arrow      1.59
Vampire Diaries      1.92

If the CW follows the pattern they’ve used the last several seasons, they’ll cancel 2 shows in addition to Gossip Girl’s announced exit, so they can premiere 3 new shows next Fall. Even with the Mark Pedowitz talk of more investment in programming, I don’t think they try and premiere 4 new shows in the Fall, and premiering just 2 new Fall shows is just as unlikely considering all his public chatter.

Emily Owens, M.D. is now certain to be canceled, but several scenarios could determine the second cancellation.

  • Does 90210 get a short final season? (currently, I assume it will)
  • Is Nikita on the Fall, 2013 schedule? (while I predict Nikita renewal for syndication purposes, I'm not certain it goes into the Fall, 2013 schedule)
  • If Cult or Carrie Diaries survives (who knows), each survival adds one to the number of Fall shows that would need to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Why does everyone seem to want to move Supernatural to Tuesdays at 9pm?

  • omabin

Emily Owens is dead and frankly, so is Beauty. I do not believe that both midseason entries suceed either (if one suceeds, it’s already a win for the CW). So this means they will have three open spots next fall. So they will gain nothing from canceling Nikita. And 90210 might just get a final season after all since they won’t want to premiere 3 new shows in the fall… they will likely premiere the forth after its final run, a la gossp girl/carrie diaries this year

  • Adrian

to open up the slots after Arrow and TVD to launch new shows. A new show after Arrow might succeed, but not after TVD.

I expect Cult to go the same way as BATB: premiere high then drop dramatically in the following weeks. I’ve read nothing but bad reviews about it. Carrie, I have no idea but if it can stay north of 0.7 or even 0.6 it is golden.

  • Chris

Cult should be paired up with Supernatural!

  • Anthony C.

Your schedule has a few small issues imo. For Instance, 90210 would not be put back on mondays for it’s final season it will be moved to Fridays to finish off it’s final run. The CW will reserve Mondays for a solid or steady female skewing performer or new series. Hart of Dixie will be moved back to mondays then The Carrie Diaries hopefully will follow it.

Your Tuesdays are dead on with The Hundred and Supernatural. A stong male skewing tuesday night is crucial to leading into another strong male skewing Wednesdays action packed night. Amazon would not work with male audiences after Arrow. It would tank badly. In fact I don’t think Amazon will be make it past development stage.

The Selection is not a good companion show for TVD and won’t get the cushy timeslot in the fall after The Vampire Diaries. It will be waiting in the wings as midseason replacement on fridays after 90210 has finished its final run. It’s taken so long to get the selection off the ground with it’s retooling it only makes sense to wait to premiere it midseason.

Hart of Dixie won’t be moving to fridays it’s not doing that bad. Nikita is done. The CW would be dumb to renew Nikita just to loose money on a show no one is watching for another year. It’s gonna be wrapped up at the end of this season. Just sell the shows 3 seasons overseas and be done with it.

I think the demise of Emily comes from scorned Ringer fans. Why get invested in a CW show only for it to get canceled while other shows do worse in the ratings?

  • Ryann

    January schedule

new show (The selection?) or repeats of most likely Arrow

    Vampire Diaries

    Beauty and the Beast

What happened to the selection? Will it be brought into the schedule as of january onwards or will it be a summer show instead?

  • Hadesa

Always find it funny when folks criticise an actor/actresses looks.

Emily Owen’s may be low rated and scrap heap bound but I’ll wager she’s a hell of a lot prettier inside and out than anyone calling her ugly.

  • Kay

When they do end 90210 they at least better put Annie and Liam back together for all the fans….

  • Elga

Why ” Emily Owens” has such bad ratings and it’s going to be canceled?

And what about is that show anyway?
If it’s another comedy it have to be really boring…

I’m ready to make my first early predictions:

    “The Vampire Diaries” Renewed
“Arrow” Renewed (though if it drops and stays below a 1.0 I reserve the right to change my mind)
    “Supernatural” Renewed
“America’s Next Top Model” All ready Renewed, but moved to summer)

Those are really the easy ones the rest are not so easy (well one of the following is still easy (“Emily Owens, M.D.”), but the rest not so much), but right now I think “Hart of Dixie” will be renewed. So…

    “Hart of Dixie” Renewed
“90210” Short final season (I know they have time to call it now, but “90210” is the only somewhat successful (for the CW) show that CBS owns outright, so I see a bit of kindness in the future for it based on that alone.)
“Nikita” Renewed for at least twenty one episodes, but at a 0.3 (or less) I firmly believe it will be moved to summer.

“Beauty and the Beast” Canceled, though I do believe it will get the back nine for the current season and merely canceled by the end of the season.
“Emily Owens, M.D.” Canceled (thirteen and done, meaning I can’t even see it getting a back nine)

So, looking at it now I’m thinking four full season shows for sure renewed and airing in the 2013/14 broadcast season. One short final season (“90210″) that could then be followed by “Cult” again or if “Cult” fails a new mid-season show, but that basically brings us to five of ten broadcast season slots filled. And another big IF, but possible “The Carrie Diaries” could hit (it does, based on reports from folks who like that sort of show, have potential), and if it did then that might translate to a full second season for it. So if that happened then there’s six 2013/14 broadcast season slots filled. Another again perhaps a big IF (but probably not) the CW does for the 2013/14 broadcast season what they did for the 2012/13 broadcast season then they’ll pick up at least three potentially full season shows, which then brings the CW up to eight (potentially nine) slots filled, which does mean that maybe “Nikita” would air its final season during the broadcast season, but I rather doubt it, because to be fair the CW would probably rather put a new show or two in season with hopes that it could hit rather than sticking with “Nikita” which they know isn’t gonna suddenly rate better. So, they could pick up four potential full season shows with only one mid-season pick up next time.

One more in-season prediction (for me) is that I don’t believe the CW will leave “Beauty and the Beast” behind “The Vampire Diaries” come mid-season, but will move “B&tB” to either Tuesday or Friday (and sorry “Nikita” fans, but Tuesday is much more likely) and therefore give “Cult” the big “The Vampire Diaries” lead-in since “B&tB” really isn’t doing anything with said lead-in other than wasting it. Yes, “Cult” will probably also waste said lead-in, but that’s not a known fact yet where it is a known fact that “B&tB” is wasting it.

  • Jon

@Nick….where do you get these new shows for next year from? Don’t those announcements usually happen in May?

  • dryr

Beuty… A truly terrible show. As was Emily Owens.

HoD is safe and Nikita is pre-paid for syndication at this point regardless of ratings.

  • s0303

i really like emily owens, but it’s a goner…they might as well cancel 90210 since it has reached syndication numbers…hod should be renewed over it since it will be going into season 3 and possible syndication…batb should be tested on another night at mid season and see if it can hold a 0.6 without tvd big lead in…

  • Gus

If cancelled then too bad about Emily Owens MD. It is well written, it has a decent pace in its’ storytelling and it is a good show. It is just on a bad network. Brandy had it right when she says that there is no need to keep Nikita around for the so called 88 episodes for syndication. Brandy cited Veronica Mars as an example of a show with less than 88 episodes that is already in syndication so no one at the CW has to move this show and that show around for the sake of low rated Nikita. You can get rid of Nikita, Hart Of Dixie, and Beauty and The Beast and you are all set.

::sigh:: I just find it comical they cancelled TSC, acted as if the show never happened, and now two of the shows they put on which I guess were supposed to be so much better are now on the chopping block before December…

  • Nick

They are all just ideas at this point, maybe with a star or two attached to the project. Nothing has been picked up yet. But, fantasy schedules are much easier if you have an idea of the new shows.
