Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 4, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.36
Emily Owens, M.D. 0.49
Gossip Girl final season 0.54
90210 :| :| :| 0.63
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.78
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.05
Supernatural      1.16
Arrow      1.59
Vampire Diaries      1.92

If the CW follows the pattern they’ve used the last several seasons, they’ll cancel 2 shows in addition to Gossip Girl’s announced exit, so they can premiere 3 new shows next Fall. Even with the Mark Pedowitz talk of more investment in programming, I don’t think they try and premiere 4 new shows in the Fall, and premiering just 2 new Fall shows is just as unlikely considering all his public chatter.

Emily Owens, M.D. is now certain to be canceled, but several scenarios could determine the second cancellation.

  • Does 90210 get a short final season? (currently, I assume it will)
  • Is Nikita on the Fall, 2013 schedule? (while I predict Nikita renewal for syndication purposes, I'm not certain it goes into the Fall, 2013 schedule)
  • If Cult or Carrie Diaries survives (who knows), each survival adds one to the number of Fall shows that would need to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

considering CWs track recorded they will air all episodes. its not a question of when will it be canceled its a question of will it be canceled or picked up.

  • Mee

CANCEL Beauty and the Beast and Emily Owens!!
Yeahh!! – ARROW WILL BE RENEWED, I think ;)

  • Mace

People are putting too much pressure on Arrow, the show is just doing OK. Yeah Im a Green Arrow fan, Im an Arrow fan and want it to do well more than anything. Its a freshman show, has only 5 episodes so far, it needs time to prove itself, if any show deserve to be a lead in its TVD and Supernatural. Supernatural is an 8th season show, its holding its own, TVD well we all know ho well it did last week -1.5.

No I dont want to see Arrow being used as a launching pad for anything just yet, they should keep the Arrow & Supernatural combo for next season. People think this is a one way street, with SPN benefiting from Arrow but its not, Arrow too benefit from Supernatural, a show with a loyal fanbase and consistent ratings. Arrow can be used as a lead in for something, maybe in its 3/4th season.

  • Mace

Also its a shame for Emily Owens MD, it just was never given a chance.
The cast is really awesome, hope they find something else.

I wish by some luck the show could be saved, its ironic its repeat got 0.4 this week, maybe there is still some hope.

  • Kaio

Why does everyone seem to want at 9pm? Can’t this show be used as lead in?

  • Kaio

    I was talking about Supernatural.

  • Melody

@Michael – I like that idea so much more than the current plan to put it on Disney Channel. I’m loving the idea of the sequel, but I’m so afraid that DC is going to ruin it. Give it a good place to experiment and thrive.

  • Melody

@Mace, I agree, I love my Wednesday night combo of Arrow and Supernatural. I find they fit really well together. I love these back to back.

  • glover

I hope the new midseason shows gets at least decent ratings (a 0.6 as season low) and I wish B&B works on Fridays (a 0.5 as season low). These would be 3 new shows renewed for next season, than CW could cancel all that poorly rated shows (90210, Hart of Dixie, Emily Owens and Nikita – maybe Nikita gets another renewal for syndicated purposes). CW will only need 3 new shows for Fall 2013 and could pick up another 2 or 3 new shows as midseason replacements for safety. That would be a much better scenario than current. But I know it’s only a dream from a CW fan…

  • Lauren90

@Kellar Gossip Girl is finishing it has not been cancelled.

  • CrystallBall

Here in France it’s more like :

TVD : 450000 viewers (an ok rating)
Nikita : 230000 viewers (which is relatively low)
Gossip Girl : 180000 viewers (GG has failed on a main channel)

On the same channel Falling skies and Haven does approximatively the same as Nikita.

    On a different channel :

Supernatural : Has failed and has erratic schedule after midnight
    90210 : don’t know

It doesn’t mean anything for US renewal, but it tells you they’re performing in the same way here.

  • Adam Decker

It’s sad. Every time a good new medical drama is created, it gets cancelled! Do I have to watch Grey’s Anatomy where the characters aren’t likable or humourous like Emily Owens? Poor CW. Maybe I should give up on watching medical dramas on TV.

  • glover

Failed US shows are sold very cheap to international networks, so I doubt a good international performance can save a show who fails on US like Nikita.

Here in my country the #2 broadcast network just premiered I Hate My Teenage Daughter, so…

  • tscchope

On the index 90210 is in greatest danger of being the 3rd show cancelled/finished.Hart of Dixie has syndication “helping” its renewal prospects. Although I think the network will fold, it’ll probable limp along until supernatural finishes its 10 season run.

  • PV

Supernatural improved a lot in quality from S6 to S7. S6 was very bad, and S7 was actually really good. But it fell again. S8 is even worse than S6. What a shame. I hope it can recover until the end of the season or get a 13 episode final season (and a great finale!) – but it has great ratings, so it won’t happen. I am a fan of the show, I really wanted like this season, but it’s been annoying and poor written. It looks like the story is going nowhere and the writers are repeating some storylines that were already used in previous seasons ):

  • Mi

SPN would be best at Tuesday at 9PM because it appeals to a different crowd than all comedies, and it’s a show that has a loyal fandom that would follow it. Also, SPNs fans also tend to tune to CW before SPN starts, and could help the show airs before it too, like with Arrow.

  • Charmed

It’s amazing that after all these years, Supernatural is still going strong with no end in sight! I can really see it going past it’s current 10 season plan (fingers crossed)!

  • Peter Mazz

I think that the CW will pick up 5 to 6 shows for next fall.

    Monday (Drama Night)
    8:00 – 90210 (Final Season)/Cult
    9:00 – Blink

    Tuesday (The Procedural magical night)
    8:00 – The Beauty & The Beast
    9:00 – Abbadon’s Journal/Wunderland

    Wednesday (Action – Packed Night)
    8:00 – Arrow
    9:00 – Supernatural

    Thursday: (Scary Night)
    8:00 – The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 – Copeland Prep

    Friday: (Horror Night)
    8:00 – The Secret Circle S3
    9:00 – Sleepy Hollow

    Hart of Dixie
    Gossip Girl
    The Carrie Diaries
    Emily Owens M.D

  • OliveGinger

I do not see the appeal of Arrow. Its practically a remake of Smallville. We’ve already seen it! I wish Emily Owens had been given mor eof a chance — its characters are more interesting and seem like they’re not sterotypes (well maybe a little) but they all have potential to grow and change. Very human and genuine show.
