Since its premiere, the ratings for freshman sitcom The New Normal have bobbed right around the NBC scripted show average each week, and because networks almost always renew their average rated shows, it's been likely to be renewed all along. Interestingly, the show has generated more than its share of anti-fan wailing in our comments and on Twitter. As to why, your guess is as good as mine.

My guess is that at current ratings levels NBC makes no decision on Chicago Fire until the end of the season, where, highly dependent on spring ratings for all NBC dramas, it could still go either way. Read more about that here.

Up All Night and Guys With Kids are both "likely canceled". Recent ratings moves have put both shows in a similar ratings range, and likely a similar fate. The seemingly desperate move by NBC to add five multi-cam episodes of Up All Night to the season order doesn't change it's prognosis, only a multi-cam ratings miracle would do that.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Greg
What are you on Parks has been great this season. Halloween surprise was unforgettable.

Someone said it’s atrociously bad? Really? How ridiculous… it’s well written and refreshingly different – but I have to give kudos to Ellen Barkin who I think really adds to make the show what it is… the little girl is a little too over the top for my taste.. but whatever.. to say this show is “atrociously bad” is “atrociously stupid”.

I think TNN is to crass. All the characters are so unlikeable. I like Partners MUCh better but of course that stinks in the ratings….just my luck. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Guys with Kids…Thank God I am purchasing the episodes from Amazon so I can watch over and over again once it is sadly cancelled. I really hope that Whitney can save this wonderful show.

  • Amy

Just because I’m a Christian and don’t agree with some of the views on the show, doesn’t mean I don’t laugh quite a bit and enjoy all of the characters. It can be a little preachy at times, but it’s a show that I always makes me laugh out loud . Some groups shouldn’t quite take things so seriously; it’s just a show after all.

  • BigBrotherFan

THE NEW NORMAL is great when ELLEN BARKIN is on it

    otherwise its blah.

I think the problem falls with the EVERSOANNOYING Partner thats constantly trying to make everything look “pretty” and talk emotions etc etc. WAY TO STEREOTYPE GAY PEOPLE! What a horrible example for the gay community. I dont even remember the characters name RYAN BRIAN dunno..I just know hes a real bad stereotype.

Thanks NeNe Leaks for taking back black women with you ABW stereotype! agh!

The show is just one big huge stereotype and bad writing!

BARKIN IS THE BEST THING ABOUT IT- WOMAN SHOULD GET A SPIN OFF SHOW FOLLOWING HER! HAHA

I’ll agree Justin121 I think Guys with Kids and Chicago Fire have a great chance of coming back. I think both shows are going to grow the rest of the season now that the 8:00pm slot has been fixed with Whitney. NBC should definitely open a two-hour comedy block on Wednesdays next fall.

Revolution will definitely be coming back but the problem is it might be too lead-in dependent.

NBC in no way possible should be bringing back New Normal, there’s nothing special about the show, its way too lead-in dependent. They should bring back Go On but it needs to be tested on another night but TNN is dead. It’s pretty much this season’s Up All Night except NBC has protected better than UAN.

the Hate for The New Normal is because it SUCKS

  • James

LOL – so now people are bigots if they don’t like a show about homosexuals…hilarious!

Its a bad show, but people have tastes that are easily satisfied, just look at the popularity of reality tv.

I like the new normal, while people want to compare it to Modern Family it really is a much different show. The New Normal is willing to touch on the hot button topics, and of course with the bigoted grandma providing much of the tension between the characters. Modern Family is a hilarious show, but is pretty much runs a safe format. I find the characters in the New Normal to be very endearing, and I like how they aren’t afraid of allowing the main characters to openly show affection to each other. I am looking forward to when the baby is born, and the family dynamics between goldie her daughter and the fathers of the baby.

I liked The New Normal. I would be happy to have it back. But I am more concerned about Go On and Revolution. Those are my two favorite NBC shows and my two new favorite series. I hope they both continue to do well because I want them to stick around.

  • Justin121

Its name alone, “The New Normal”, is pretensious, preachy, and, yes, even somewht degratory.

Needless to say those qualities are applied to the show itself as well.

It’s like a half-hour version of season 2 Glee (it’s even taped the same way).

Add to all that the little girl who’s their own rip-off of Modern Family’s Luke/Manny, the Amy Pohelr look-a-like who isn’t nearly half as funny, and the rest of the one-dimensional, one-liner-spouting cast, and you’ve got a stincker.

  • Marketry

The whole bigotry thing is just an excuse to hide that fact that people simply just don’t like this show. Partners is a gay comedy too and its ratings are higher and Will & Grace was a huge hit for so many years so that bigotry thing is stupid.

New Normal’s ratings have also been sad so if NBC brings it back its just because they like it but they really shouldn’t be bringing it back because its just a waste of space on the schedule.

  • CeeKay

LOVE The New Normal! I get that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but I find it to be a good balance since Ellen Barkin’s right-wing grandmama character gets LOTS of time to air her point of view. I’m about as far left as you can get, and even I’ve learned a thing or two from her. This is the only NBC show I even bother to watch, by the way. They generally just air utter garbage.

  • Rebecca

I think “A New Normal” would have been a better title…I enjoy the show when it’s not being too preachy. It’s entertaining and has grown on me. I see it online when I have time. Ellen Barkin is the best on the show IMO, and it figures that the most unlikeable character is the best one, lol. Like with Sue Sylvester on “Glee” (which I no longer watch, but I always sort of enjoyed Sue). I think the godparent-selecting episode was well done. Anyway, it’s not my favorite comedy (that’s Parks & Rec) but it’s enjoyable. Also enjoying Guys With Kids, 30R, Office, UAN, Grimm and Go On. Enjoyed what aired of Animal Practice, too. The Office seems better this final season than last season…but I do hope they bring Michael Scott back for just one episode (or even one or two brief scenes) before they leave the air.

  • DaxJackson

I think they’ll cancel Chicago Fire, if they don’t where are they going to put it mid-season.

  • Jay

Chicago Fire will not be canceled. Show is fantastic and ratings will grow. Ratings for next two episodes are key. Following two hour “The Voice” tomorrow night which will increase ratings obviously followed by the following week where we will see how many remained.

  • JAY

Just heard insider info. GWK get the season PU

  • Mickey

I’m rooting for Chicago Fire. I didn’t expect to like it but it’s quickly becoming my favorite new show. What sold me were the great characters and the fact there’s plenty of humor and action thrown in with the drama.

I think it’s got a fair shot at renewal. The piltot didn’t do it justice and it doesn’t have a good lead-in, but with those problems past I think it’ll grow.

  • Jay

Must be some other Jay. GWK has zero chance. Dead in the water.
