Scripted Cable Show Renew/Cancel Status List

We frequently get questions about why we don't have a Renew/Cancel Index for cable shows. The short answer is because we couldn't do it and be as accurate as we are with the broadcast shows. For more detail on that, check out this post.  Maybe someday we'll throw accuracy to the wind and do a "for entertainment purposes only" index for scripted cable shows, but in the meantime it occurred to me that we could at least maintain a renew status list for cable scripted shows. The table below is a first crack at that.

My goal (and I don't expect I have achieved that in this first crack at it) is to include all scripted cable shows excluding kids' shows and Adult Swim's shows. I don't have anything against kids shows or Adult Swim (or, for that matter, unscripted shows) but was looking to create something that could fairly easily be maintained/managed/updated.

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

If you find errors or omissions (excluding unscripted shows, kids shows or shows that have not aired yet) please note them in the comments and I'll update the table.

Notes:

  • Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
  • I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
  • Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network).
  • Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

    Forgot “Being Human” on Syfy, it’s their flagship series. Or at least I think so.

  • DeeAgeaux

    @The End

    The cast says they have not heard about Alpha’s Season 3. SyFy has until Thanksgiving to renew. If it was 0% chance of renewal they would have already passed on the show and passed on the actors options for another year. Another site I read says 50/50.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

    Craig…yep, thanks. I’ll add that in too sometime within the next 24 hours!

  • DeeAgeaux

    @Craig

    I think Being Human is Syfy’s flagship until Defiance arrives in April.

  • The End

    @DeeAgeaux

    To be fair, the fact the show hasn’t been picked up, nor have the cast been offered extended contracts, nor to be the best of my knowledge this show being financed by Universal Cable Productions yet. I would say it was dead personally. It’s quite common for a wall of silence to be thrown up until deadline day/near abouts. Occured with Sanctuary too. Stargate Universe was cancelled because it was required at that time to give an answer either way by that date to MGM. Cast opinions are entirely worthless.

    @Craig

    Warehouse 13 is the networks flagship series, and the highest rated scripted show currently on the air. It went from Stargate to Eureka to Warehouse 13.

  • Lizzie

    Any news on Beavis and Butthead regarding renewal?

  • DeeAgeaux

    @ The End

    I did not cite cast opionions. Simply that they have not heard about season 3.
    I think it was deadline that said 50/50 but not sure if I remember correctly. I guess we shall see how common a wall of silence is before cancellation.

    Since Being Human is strong enough to run in winter/spring vs network shows as opposed to shows that run primarily in the Summer I call BH the networks flagship show.

  • Bruce

    You might want to add Camelot and its one season in 2011 and then cancellation on Starz

  • Brandojames

    @bruce: I don’t think Camelot needs to be added. It has been over a year. No need.

    Great list so far. The League does need to be added though to FX.

    Comedy Central:

    @DeeAgeaux, first of all, the smart money is on not abusing the English language by putting an apostrophe in “Alphas” where on doesn’t belong. ;P

    Unfortunately, the ratings are bad and I would bet against the show being renewed. I love the show and I’d love to see another season. I’d even abuse some apostrophes for another season, if that would help somehow. But it doesn’t look promising to me.

  • The End

    @DeeAgeaux

    For 99 percent of Syfy shows, the cast find out about announcements at roughly the same time as the public. I’ve never bothered to find out if the cast are still under contract, I can’t imagine they will be for long, at this point they are free to do whatever show they wish to do.

    But in general the term flagship is used too loosely. Being Human doesn’t warrant the same attention and prestige that Warehouse 13, or say shows like Stargate, or Eureka, or Battlestar Galactica received in the past. The show is beloved purely because it has a strong female following on the network. But you are welcome to call it a flagship show lol.

    Anyway, I think we should put this conversation on hold till news of the shows future is made public either way. :)

  • Ryan

    Forgot Treme

  • TBFL

    South Park?

  • Bob

    Downton Abbey???? I know it is coming back for Season 3 in January but will be keeping track of this decent show also?

  • Bob

    White Collar is only starting it’s fifth season? It seems like it has been on forever. Like the show but dang, I would have thought it would be in season 8 by now at least. lol.

  • Max

    AMC Comic Book Men

  • Jeff

    What about Beavis and Butthead?

  • Spun

    Bomb Girls on Reelz (renewed 2nd 12 ep season)
