TV Ratings Wednesday: 'The Voice' Takes a Wednesday Hit, 'X Factor' Dips, + 'Chicago Fire', 'Survivor', 'Suburgatory', 'Modern Family' & 'Arrow' Up

NBC was the number one network in adults 18-49 while CBS was on top with total viewers.

On NBC, The Voice, with a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating was way down from last Tuesday's 4.6 rating.  But, it was airing out of pattern on a new night--it doesn't usually air Wednesdays, but due to the election it did. Despite the new day dip, it boosted Chicago Fire by 27% to a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating versus last week's 1.6 adults 18-49 rating. The Voice also propelled NBC to its first in-season Wednesday win in 18-49 with non-sports programming since Christmas Eve 2008.

On FOX, X Factor earned a 2.6, down a tenth from last week's 2.7 adults 18-49 rating.

On ABC, The Middle scored a 2.8, up two tenths  from its last original's 2.6 adults 18-4 rating.  The Neighbors earned a 2.1, also up two tenths  from last week's 1.9 adults 18-49 rating. Modern Family notched a 4.7, way up from last week's 4.2 adults 18-49 rating. Suburgatory earned a 2.9, half a full ratings point up from last week's 2.4 adults 18-49 rating. Nashville garnered a 2.0, up two tenths from last week's series low 1.8 18-49 rating.

On CBS, Survivor: Philippines scored a  2.7, up two tenths from last week's 2.5 adults 18-49 rating. Criminal Minds garnered a 3.0, up a tenth from last week's 2.9 adults 18-49 rating. CSI earned 2.3, down a tenth from last week's 2.4 adults 18-49 rating.

On the CW, Arrow scored a 1.3, up three tenths from last week's 1.0 adults 18-49 rating and it's best-since-premiere rating. Supernatural earned an 1.0, up two tenths from last week's 0.8 adults 18-49 rating.

*	In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The
Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 3.0/8; CBS's "Late Show with David
Letterman," 2.9/8; and ABC's combo of "Nightline," 2.9/7; and "Jimmy
Kimmel Live," 1.6/5.  

*	In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results
were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 1.1/5; "Late Show," 0.8/4;
"Nightline," 0.9/4; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.6/4.

*	At 12:35 a.m., "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.6/6 in
metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig
Ferguson" (1.5/5).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late
Night" (0.6/4 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.5/3).

*	At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 1.0/5 in
metered-market households and a 0.5/4 in adults 18-49 in the 25
markets with local people meters.

Definitions: Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    “They can’t launch anything new at 9pm because the Modern Family juggernaut will destroy it, hence they sacrificed a veteran there to at least provide a half-decent compatible lead-in for Chicago Fire. It’s a fine strategy.”

    I disagree. How’s it working out for NBC? Are they getting series highs? I didn’t think so.

    No, it won’t. Revolution gets a 0.4-0.8 higher lead-in and it doesn’t make a difference because Revolution has a good retention and its own fanbase apparently. If you compare first episodes, Revolution got 4.2 from the Voice lead-in and Chicago Fire’s first episode due to the Voice got just 2.2 (you can 0.5 to make up for the difference – 2.7 – that it got due a late stage boost, but its not as good because even this number will drop further), significantly dropping in half hour ratings as well.

    I had the opposite case. Hated Revolution for the first 3-4 episodes and was about to give up, but the show had to keep improving with every subsequent episode. Now I’m a fan. Its quite an ode to old adventure movies rather than being completely sci-fi and that’s where it gets its uniqueness from.

    Chicago Fire on the other hand, never rose up above boring. I saw 3 episodes and gave up.

    So pleased with The CW’s attention to its two best shows:

    Supernatural, at the top of the heap, continues to produce some of the finest acting (Ackles and Padalecki are phenomenal) in what is known by the fans as GR8 (Great Season 8), and for production values and writing on TV! Jeremy Carver is doing a fantastic job; SPN is his home, surely!

    Arrow, also doing well, is a perfect partner, and Amell does a great job; cast is fine. Good to see Katie Cassidy (the first demon Ruby on Supernatural) in such a good role. Long may she prosper!
