11/16 Update: Partners has been canceled.
-
CBS typically cancels its lowest rated sitcom each season, so rookie sitcom Partners has been certain to be canceled from the day its ratings stumbled out of the gate. It's likely still on the air because of the economic reality for stocking up on replacement shows I wrote about in the ABC post this week. Although CBS could have put Rules of Engagement in its slot quickly the same way they did for How To Be A Gentleman last season. Perhaps they have other plans for Rules, or perhaps there's some problem with mid-season sitcom Friend Me that we don't know about. CBS' future actions this season may shed light on why, or we may never know.

Rookie Vegas was off last week for Election Night coverage, so no more ratings news to factor into its prospects. It's still more likely to be canceled than renewed by May.

It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel two of the following dramas CSI:NY, The Good Wife, The Mentalist and Vegas so they can have room to premiere 3 new dramas next fall. Read more about that here.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

CBS get keep CSI:ny it do was last lot long then has keep up with good work . I am big fan of show and not only one it big fan fall it.

  • Battlejuice

Those were the most confusing two sentences, Court. Bravo!

  • Jeff (Canada)

I think if one of the CSIs was off the air it would increase the chances that the remaining CSI would get better ratings than it is right now, due to “it being the only CSI left to watch”. So if that’s the case then I think they should cancel the original and focus all their attention to New York, maybe even moving an original CSI show member over there.

Cancel CSI, Vegas, Partners, Elementary, and The Mentalist. Keep the rest.

  • Jeff (Canada)

^Or I could just as easily swap The Mentalist with The Good Wife. It’s 50/50.

  • CBSViewer

CSI: NY is safe because of its key role on Friday. The Mentalist will be Renewed too (CBS will give it a second season on Sunday like they did for CSI: Miami and The Good Wife). On he other hand The Good Wife, Partners, Vegas, Rules of Engagement, Golden Boy (after all no mid-season drama on CBS survived) and Friend Me will be canceled. Plus Made in Jersey is already dead so with all this cancelation CBS will not axe CSI: NY or The Mentalist (both are not bad in demo and always win their timeslot in viewers).

  • Dan S

It’s a mystery as to why CBS keeps Partners on the air. It received 1.8 sandwiched between 2 shows that got 3.0 & 3.2 respectively last night. People are going out of their way to avoid this show at all costs.

  • TVDude

I still think CBS was planning to expand their Thursday block, if Partners was a success. Since it’s not, they’re probably stuck trying to figure out what they should do. Technically, they could still do the extended Thursday block. I could see this:
    The Big Bang Theory
    TBBT repeat
    Two and a Half Men
    Friend Me

If there’s anything that we know, it’s that a TBBT repeat does incredibly well after an original episode. I could see them going for it. Rules would then get tossed back to 8:30pm Mondays, its old home.

What would that mean for POI or Elementary? Either show could move. With Elementary airing after the Super Bowl, it wouldn’t be hard to promote its new time period if they were to give it one.

While that could all happen, I think chances are, Friend Me will air in January and Rules will replace it in March (kind of like it did with Rob last year).

  • Ram510

Please, just bring back Rules of Engagement now!!!

  • Nope

THE MENTALIST/BLUE BLOODS/HAWAII FIVE-O are the only shows that matter on this list
    maybe THE GOOD WIFE

  • Greg

I wonder how CBS intend to air Rules of Engagement. The only option I can think of is burning off two episodes per week on Wednesday at 8 during Survivor hiatus. Unless they decide to give it the post HIMYM slot and burn off Friend Me or save it for the fall (with Kick Ass 2 coming up, it might be a good idea to do that, in case Christopher Mintz-Plasse turns out to be a star or close to that).

  • Tommy M.

While CBS usually cancels their lowest rated comedy it’s pretty rare for them to pull them before they air their ordered episodes.

  • Dan

@Bill – Heres My theory on why Partners hasn’t been pulled. For one every fall CBS always cancels 1 show and they did that with Made in Jersey. Last year was the first time in 10 years they pulled a fall comedy after a few episodes but in over 12 years CBS has Never pulled a new Monday night comedy in the fall. All comedies for CBS are considerably down year to year maybe due to the voice but maybe CBS feels they may as well do what Fox is doing with the Mob Doctor and stretch out All 13 eps until Jan/Feb. CBS keeping Partners doesn’t surprise me as much as Fox keeping Mob Doctor. I also feel that CBS may be reluctant to put Rules on the schedule because I think no matter what CBS won’t order anymore Rules eps and this may be the final Rules season.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“For one every fall CBS always cancels 1 show”

No. Two years ago, every single new show got a full season order.

That being the case, you’re basically saying the same thing as I am about why Partners is still on the air.

“While CBS usually cancels their lowest rated comedy it’s pretty rare for them to pull them before they air their ordered episodes.”

Except for last Fall, of course.

  • Dan

And CBS isn’t extending the Thursday comedy block, so I think Rules will replace Partners by March (like how Rules replaced Worst Week, Accidentaly on Purpose) and Friend Me may air after Big Bang for 8 weeks giving Two and a Half Men an 8 week hiatus. I really wouldn’t be surprised if CBS ordered a few more Partners eps like they did with A Gifted Man as weird as that sounds.

  • Dan

@Bill – Technically youre right but every other year 1 new show gets axed, I attribute All 5 new series in the Fall of 2010 getting full seasons because May 2010 CBS cancelled 7 series. The highest in years. And while Medium wasn’t a new show CBS did ax it around this time two years ago. I expect CBS to make an announcement on Partners within a couple if weeks and while the show will not get a second season It will probably get 3 more episodes.

  • Ricky

AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!! Come on Mentalist! Rise back to your former glory already!

Two more winners in two more days? It could be done! http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/10/09/play-the-elimination-game/152342/comment-page-43/#comments

Love seeing five green smiley faces by 2 Broke Girls. Its the only ComedeyCentral/sitcom I watch and only CBS show I watch. Its crass, crude, raunchy which normally isn’t my thing, but Kat & Beth have great friend chemistry and the show is funny.I like Jennifer Coolige as Spohie too.

  • RG-X

Friend Me? What’s Friend Me? Oh no – don’t tell me there will be a show about facebook friends – Nooooooooo!

  • Tracy

I love Partners but I’ve accepted it will be canceled. But what are the chances that CBS will let it run a full season like the William Shatner show from a couple of seasons ago?

  • glover

Partners started weak but now it’s really funny just as 2 Broke Girls.
