11/16 Update: Partners has been canceled.
-
CBS typically cancels its lowest rated sitcom each season, so rookie sitcom Partners has been certain to be canceled from the day its ratings stumbled out of the gate. It's likely still on the air because of the economic reality for stocking up on replacement shows I wrote about in the ABC post this week. Although CBS could have put Rules of Engagement in its slot quickly the same way they did for How To Be A Gentleman last season. Perhaps they have other plans for Rules, or perhaps there's some problem with mid-season sitcom Friend Me that we don't know about. CBS' future actions this season may shed light on why, or we may never know.

Rookie Vegas was off last week for Election Night coverage, so no more ratings news to factor into its prospects. It's still more likely to be canceled than renewed by May.

It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel two of the following dramas CSI:NY, The Good Wife, The Mentalist and Vegas so they can have room to premiere 3 new dramas next fall. Read more about that here.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It’s surprising to me, too, because CBS has to cram 13 episodes of Rules of Engagement and 13 episodes of Friend Me into that time slot by the end of the season. I don’t see them opening up any new comedy slots and all the other comedies have 24-episode orders. So what gives?

The only likely options are: 1) CBS cuts the episode order for Friend Me or 2) They let Rules run partially (or entirely) in the summer.

As for the drama situation, I still say Vegas and The Mentalist get cancelled, while CSI: NY and The Good Wife get renewed.

I know I am in the minority here but I like Partners. It gets better each week. The funny this is I go out of my way to watch it. How I Met Your Mother is boring to me and The 2 Broke Girls are annoying. I know it is going to be cancelled I just wish people would give a try.

  • Choco

I love Partners so much even though the beginning was a little boring. Now it’s really hilarious TOTALLY much better than The Big Bang Theory!!! The low rating is weird…

  • g

Partners = bad premise, bad cast, bad show.

Every week I watch HIMYM, then change the channel, then change it back for Broke Girls. I would stay with CBS at 8:30 for Rules or Friend Me.

  • LBV3

Does anyone know why PARTNERS isnt available at places like iTunes and Amazon? Even Made In Jersey was on itunes…

  • Michael

I think CBS will cancel CSI: NY and VEGAS. They will renew MENTALIST and probably bring back THE GOOD WIFE for a fifth and final season.

  • Casey

My question was why not do what CBS did with How to be a Gentleman which was not only pulled but had its episode order reduced from 13 to 9.

I don’t know what the deal is with Friend Me but I believe it only got a 7 episode order for this season which means it could share a timeslot with Rules after the beginning of the year.

Partners is such a sinkhole that it has actually made me less enthusiastic about the Monday comedies as a whole as weird as that may seem, the last 2 weeks I’ve skipped 2bg and Mike & Molly for American Pickers.

  • Mon

    @Michael
I don’t think CBS will cancel CSI: NY but renew The Mentalist. They cancelled CSI: Miami but renewed CSI: NY last season so NY must be very valuable to them.

  • Mon

Okay. I’m kind of getting why CBS would choose to renew The Mentalist over CSI: NY. It would be easier to just cancel NY move the original CSI to Fridays at 9pm and make the night stronger than to cancel The Mentalist and move CSI: NY there or premiere a new show there.

I think despite its disappointing ratings, Hawaii Five-0 would remain at Mondays. TNT is reported to pay a record breaking price per episode and CBS would want to milk the show for as long as possible by not to giving it an early death/difficult time slot by moving it around.

  • Andy

Partners is cringe-worthy. It’s absolutely awful, and the Monday night comedy lineup on CBS would be doing far better without it.

  • LucyFan

I LOVE PARTNERS!! It reminds me of I LOVE LUCY! (Especially Louis’ fit in the last ep was SO LUCY!) The Old Fashioned Humor and situations are entertaining!

  • Tre

Let’s see, in the last five years, the only new drama to be an international hit is The Mentalist. You’re a cash cow for the WB. CBS decides to move your show to the deathslot despite it being a strong show at 10pm. Then CBS replaces it with a virtual copy in the same timeslot it previously occupied, in order to try and get some of that international business since their shows are long in the tooth. How ticked would you be at WB? I think TM is still safe. NCIS3 seems a bit desperate.

  • KJ Styles

I’m convinced that The Good Wife is CBS’s Chuck. It will be renewed for a 5th and final (probably 13 episode) season.

I also think The Mentalist will be renewed and possibly moved to Fridays should they cancel CSI NY (which I think they will).

Vegas is dead, and that’s sad because I’m a Michael Chiklis fan but he hasn’t had a great show since The Shield.

Partners needs to be yanked. I’m thinking someone at CBS likes it otherwise it’d be gone already. Even How To Be A Gentleman got better ratings than Partners. I still wish CBS would have picked up Over & Out instead of that horrific show.

Overall though, CBS is my favorite of the four broadcast nets, as it has 7 shows I watch regularly.

  • TvAllDay

It amazes me how ppl can say that want shows canceled that they don’t even watch. Why would you want ppl to be out of a job.

I want Soph on my screen.

Luving the green next to Hawaii Five-0!!!

  • Holly

    @Tre,

in the last five years, the only new drama to be an international hit is The Mentalist.

Do you have any data to back up that claim?

  • KJ Styles

@TVAllDay- “It amazes me how ppl can say that want shows canceled that they don’t even watch. Why would you want ppl to be out of a job.”

I watched the first episode of Partners, I thought it sucked so I want it cancelled in favor of something better. As a fan of HIMYM and 2BG, I’d like to watch a good show sandwiched between them.

Sophia Bush is a hottie, without a doubt. But there are a plethora of hotties on TV that are on better shows. And actors/actresses get jobs a LOT easier than non-celebrities, so I don’t feel sad when one of their shows gets cancelled. I’m sure Sophia’s agent could get her work fairly easily once Partners gets the axe.

  • TvAllDay

You watched the first episode so that entitles you to say a show should get canceled. ok. a lot of shows first episode sucked & they go on for years.

& watch the next show gets axed too so what then.

So you think the only reasons ppl get jobs is b/c they’re hot. wow. doesn’t matter if they’re talented or not. as long as they’re hot they’ll find work fairly easily. Did i get that right.

  • Joseph

I watch HIMYM and then i stay for Partners. it makes me laugh a lot.

  • ToXiX

I’m a fan of Partners but am just waiting for Friend Me.

  • Jonas

I’d really like to see Vegas and Elementary swap spots on the ratings board.
