11/16 Update: Partners has been canceled.
CBS typically cancels its lowest rated sitcom each season, so rookie sitcom Partners has been certain to be canceled from the day its ratings stumbled out of the gate. It's likely still on the air because of the economic reality for stocking up on replacement shows I wrote about in the ABC post this week. Although CBS could have put Rules Of Engagement in its slot quickly the same way they did for How To Be A Gentleman last season. Perhaps they have other plans for Rules, or perhaps there's some problem with mid-season sitcom Friend Me that we don't know about. CBS' future actions this season may shed light on why, or we may never know.

Rookie Vegas was off last week for Election Night coverage, so no more ratings news to factor into its prospects. It's still more likely to be canceled than renewed by May.

It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel two of the following dramas CSI:NY, The Good Wife, The Mentalist and Vegas so they can have room to premiere 3 new dramas next fall. Read more about that here.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Paying more for less what a scam.

  • Nick

That’s the way most things are in any type of business. Get over it.

  • Justin121

“It’s a scam started by ABC back in the early ’70s. You can read about it in a book called Prime Time Propaganda by Ben Shapiro. ”

I read in Wikipedia one of the Big 3 (ABC?) had zero shows in the top 30 so they “invented” the demo(18-49) to be competitve.

  • DKD

“So logically when applied to tv broadcasting it would stand to reason that the more viewers would give the advertisers more exposure. ”

Advertisers consider the older viewers a bonus. If you buy based higher ratings for young demos, you know you are usually going to get the older demos in great numbers even without seeking them.

But, if you buy based on total viewers, you don’t necessarily get the number of younger viewers you need.

Older people watch so much TV, trying to reach them is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Just because the 18-49 demo is hard to get doesn’t mean its worth the effort. A long time ago ad agencies were sold on a few wobbly studies that this age demo had the most money was willing to spend it.

  • I like this show

Network TV is very depressing these days. I gave Vegas a shot it’s ok i have become discouraged in watching it anymore since it seems it’s going to be canceled. I LOVE Last Resort and it seems to be on the way out also. The only network shows I watch now are BBT POI and Revolution (haven’t gotten word its canceled yet lol) THATS IT… I mean do people that watch network TV just like stupid competition shows? reality shows?. Cable TV at this point is so much better its not even funny. TWD on AMC gets better ratings then pretty much anything on the entire NBC network except the Voice. SOA,Homeland, Dexter I watch those shows Network has basically nothing to offer anymore.

  • vanna85

  • martine

Can someone explain the index to the likelyhood of cancellation? I don’t see why the ones with the lowest index won’t simply be the ones cancelled. Or why the index number doesn’t correlate then why is that. Can someone give me a little bit of info on why they don’t match up please?

  • martine

@ DKD; Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Do you honestly believe there are any older viewers watching shows like “Supernatural” or “Grimm”?. Or even a show like “Once Upon a Time”. I doubt it. Most people don’t even retire until their late 60’s. So they don’t really have any more spare time, and their jobs tend to be more responsible. I am willing to bet that older people only watch the few shows they like just like anyone else over thirty. In fact I certainly notice that I dislike more shows as I get older. Most of the tv watching is done by twenty something year olds.

  • martine

Of course I have started to realize that the demo works well for me personally. Most the shows I like have a rather low amount of total viewers. Just a lot of them younger viewers…but that sort of proves my point.

  • Tom Mc

Any scripted program would be better than Rules Of Engagement.

  • Tom Mc

Martine, I’m 56 years old. I watch Supernatural, Grimm AND Once Upon A Time. Just sayin’…

  • Tabb

Agree with you Tom Mc. I’m 59 and watch Grimm, Fringe, Revenge, Dexter, Walking Dead. Can’t always go by the demographics.

  • The End

Incredible how everything you wrote there is entirely incorrect. The Nielsen numbers prove that there are lots of viewers in their 40s, 50s, 60s, watching the shows you’ve listed.

Infact, lots of older viewers are watching TV these days.

  • Carol

I really liked Partners and disappointed that it’s being cancelled. Couldn’t CBS find another time slot, give it a chance.

  • Monica S

I absolutely love Rules of Engagement and I am not a TV person.
The writing is fabulous and makes me literally Laugh out Loud! I giggle and chuckle throughout the program and it is a cast that makes those character come to life and believe what you are watching.
    WIn Win for everyone!!!
Anyone and Everyone should watchit at least twice…
Not to mention that Jeff is one sexy guy, from his voice to his chest to eyes! Yummmmm

  • M

CBS, please find a place for Michael Urie. Also, we can do without Two and a Half Men now.

  • crush

Glad to that partners is going to be canceled. It was worse than terrible, and for more than one reason. GOOD BYE
