Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 11, 2012):

CW rookie The Beauty & The Beast is currently a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Its ratings are too close to sophomore Hart Of Dixie's for me to make a call between them at this point (particularly if you factor out the BATB premiere). I hope there's some separation later in the season that will clear things up, but based on recent CW history that may be wishful thinking.

What is very clear is that a cadre of vocal fans of the 2011-12 casualty The Secret Circle hate The Beauty & The Beast with the fire of a thousand suns.

While the reasons for each fan's hate may be different, that doesn't stop me from asking what our readers think. Vote as many times as your fingers will allow!

Emily Owens, M.D. is certain to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Defo option c. Not “all their shows must fail” though but more like that one must, cause it has TSC old time slot.

  • Paleonut

Ah, those litttle green men sure know how to make me smile! Way to go Supernatural & Arrow!

Seeing this year’s Friday ratings really brings home how hard SPN fans worked the last 2 seasons!

  • Laurent

When I read “The CW screwed over TSC & its fans, so now all their shows must fail!” I just want to say… REALLY ?!?!?! In this case, let’s talk about Veronica Mars & Ringer ;)

  • hammard

I personally think the makers of B&TB need to be applauded. It takes a real effort to make a show even more dire than TSC *ducks from missiles*

  • Laura

Honestly, I only watched 3 episodes, that boredom, the two actors have no chemistry between them. Much ado about nothing! Clear!!!

  • Bill Gorman

“In this case, let’s talk about Veronica Mars & Ringer ”

One crazy fanbase at a time, please!

  • Laura

of course I was referring to the show, boring and ugly, Beauty and the Beast.

  • Dan

The slot behind TVD is cursed? Let’s talk about Tuesday at 9 haha. So many shows have failed there after one season…Melrose Place, Hellcats, Ringer…and now looks like Emily Owens will be joining them! I will never understand how they can’t get a show to stick in that time slot for more than one season!

  • CrystalBall

I really think Nikita is dead, unless they give it a summer run (but they would still have to replace it).

  • Jarrod

GG will be gone shortly. Emily Owens is on it’s way out. Carrie Dairies will soon be afterwards. My guess is that all of those shows will make way for 3 more. Nikita is defiantly get it’s 4th season (possibly followed by a short 11 episode 5th season JUST to get that 100 mark for syndication incase the 89 isn’t accepted). Arrow, Supernatural and TVD aren’t even going to be questioned, seeing as it’s obvious they’ll be back. Hart of Dixie will certainly be back, which will lock it in for a 4th season for syndication. 90210 will be open to a shortened final season, however, if it’s ratings did pick up (much like tonight) it could very well get a full season pick-up. Chances are that BATB will be canceled and that Cult will possibly follow. Nevertheless, I am positive that Arrow, Supernatural, TVD, 90210, Nikita and Hart of Dixie will be back next year.

  • EatMorePez

I went with the third option which basically translates to: Secret Circle fans are sore losers/immature morons. Full disclosure: I watched every episode of the Secret Circle.

  • Jarrod

TSC fans need to move on. The show plummeted and though I feel bad for the loyal viewers who stuck around to the end, it’s life and that happens on television. Honestly, it’s not the first show to be canceled and it certainly won’t be the last.

  • Brandy

I think it’s number 3, my friend keep saying how she won’t watch any show or at least any new shows on CW and dosent mind if cw loose ratings and hopes it fails,go under cause they cancelled SC.
I love both Hart of Dixie and Beauty and don’t want it to come down to a battle between them for the last renewal cause I can’t choose one to root for..I like Emily Owens and am sad it’s sure to be cancelled, but I’ll deal & live.I like 90210.Im happy VD is still doing well.

  • Moe

Love love LOVE seeing those green smiles next to Supernatural :)

  • Jason Lawson

Because The CW president was very rude and disgusting when he was asked about why the show was canceled! I MEAN REALLY?! There was no reason to cancel the show when it was the THIRD HIGHEST RATED SHOW on The CW!!!!

  • Dóchas

I’m not thrilled with BaTB but I wasn’t with TSC either. I think the lead in TSC was so severely miscast, I could never imagine rooting for her. PT was probably the best thing about that show and I did not care for Faye. To each their own. I don’t understand this “my show was cancelled so screw yours!” mentality. I’m still bitter over Jericho, Moonlight and Prison Break (talentless hack writers!) but I found other shows.

  • Brandy

I don’t know that Nikita will be renewed-I’ve read WB made a deal for third season shows to be syndicated and shows with less 88-100 episodes have been syndicated(Veronica Mars,Community,Summerland,SC)& I also heard that the show runner has a three season plan and it’s ratings are terrible-specially for a third season show-& I doubt CW expected under a million viewers and z0.2-0.3 this soon.

  • Amanda

love beauty and the beast and I love TSC.. I’m so mad that the Cw cancel that show.

  • Jarrod

To be honest, when a show (TSC) in it’s first year drops more than half it’s audience and demo ratings, you can’t really expect it to be renewed. Honestly, Gossip Girl and 90210 can pull better demos than that and they’re 6 and 5 years old, respectively.

  • Jarrod

With Nikita moving back go it’s previous time slot in late November, I’m positive that it’s ratings will go up and the demo will be acceptable enough at a 0.5-0.6 for a Friday night. Not the best, but that’s worthy enough to be renewed for a 4th season.
