Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 11, 2012):

CW rookie The Beauty & The Beast is currently a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Its ratings are too close to sophomore Hart Of Dixie's for me to make a call between them at this point (particularly if you factor out the BATB premiere). I hope there's some separation later in the season that will clear things up, but based on recent CW history that may be wishful thinking.

What is very clear is that a cadre of vocal fans of the 2011-12 casualty The Secret Circle hate The Beauty & The Beast with the fire of a thousand suns.

While the reasons for each fan's hate may be different, that doesn't stop me from asking what our readers think. Vote as many times as your fingers will allow!

Emily Owens, M.D. is certain to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I find that they’re trying to rip on one show so that the network will magically put the secret circle back on the air. The new show, beauty and the beast is perfect for that because it’s the same genre, so they’ll keep it up until they realize what they want just can’t happen. They’re seriously sick though as they keep posting spam EVERYWHERE and they don’t just attack BATB, they attack other shows as well. I think they need to do some growing up and just move on with their lives.

Poll makes absolutely no sense. Do bears run this site?

“I swear these young tv viewers are really brain dead. Arrow is decent with alot of potential with many flaws and these Young teens think its the best new show this fall, lol. Its getting better but comparing it To TVD is absurd. Arrow is HorseS##T compared to TVD. And i actually watch Arrow.”

TVD’s first season wasn’t good, and the 2nd season got better, but I started really loving the show only towards the end of the 2nd season when Jenna was killed.
SPN’s first season imo was also meh, but it became my favorite at the 1st season finale, when the truck hit them.

Arrow is still at the beginning and has a lot of potential, and it could become better than TVD in the future if they develop the story well.

“Second, the storyline for TSC seems more drawn out than it actually was because of the way the CW broadcast it. TSC went on hiatus for an entire month from mid-February to mid-March. ”
TSC returned from the hiatus with the same 18-49 ratings as before the hiatus. It fell two weeks after returning from the hiatus, so let’s not blame the hiatus again, shall we?..

^^ you know what we say about taste…….
TVD isn’t an amazing show either. It’s not even 1/4 of what buffy was. The probleme with CW is that their shows are average at best. The writing on their shows IS off really often the casting is off too. It’s like they are just looking for pretty face instead of good actors.

  • hmyers

I know that I am in a relatively small group, but I really like BATB. I also like TSC and was diappointed when it was cancelled. However, they are two totally different shows and people who are not even giving BATB a chance because of the time slot it took are a little over the edge.

  • dks

I know I am in the minority but I like Beauty and the Beast, but I also know it has very low ratings. I know I read that I full season was ordered but with the ratings that they have I’m not sure if that will be fulfilled. I just can not shake the feeling that it will be cancelled. Maybe the CW can change nights and that would possibly bring up the ratings.

  • Tom

@ Mi Let’s stop editing my remarks to fit your purposes shall we? The demo didn’t hit 0.6 for the first time until three weeks after the February – March hiatus. That’s a tribute to the patience of TSC’s viewers. The show then went on yet a third hiatus for another three weeks and hit 0.5 upon its return (Episode 19). Hence, my point about the episodes becoming increasingly dispersed. I’ve always felt that was because many fans just got tired of the continuous interruptions. The ratings didn’t recover after that. Playing hide and seek with a first year program that has a complicated plot isn’t a good idea, especially when it’s being broadcast on the CW. And, to repeat my earlier point, spreading out episodes in this manner made the show’s storyline hard to follow.

  • Shaz

@Millie “i mean how many other fanbases raised over 7 thousand dollars for make a witch save a witch foundation to get their show back”

That’s a pittance. Moonlight fans raised over $15,000. I don’t know the number for Firefly, but it’s in the tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands. When actor Nathan Fillion jokingly said that he’s like to buy the rights to Firefly and make more episodes, the fans actually thought that was a financially feasible goal they could raise money for.

So TSC is not that special. There are other shows with fanbases that are far larger and/or richer and/or crazier!

  • Mi

The show then went on yet a third hiatus for another three weeks and hit 0.5 upon its return (Episode 19).

Sorry dude, but the show fell at episode 18

It lost over 20% of its viewers then and they never returned, and it lost them because it SUCKED, not because of any hiatus.

And sorry dude, but when a show is actually GOOD, it can return even stronger after a hiatus, like Once Upon A Time that returned stronger after its hiatuses last season.

  • Sel

    HoD is certain renewal!
    Mark my words ;)

  • Tom

@ Mi You know, barring an upward correction, Beauty and the Beast just fell to a 0.6 rating in its sixth episode. So, you can keep nitpicking all you want, but the bottom line is clear – the CW blew it by scheduling a predictably bad show in TSC’s old time slot. And to further drive home this point, the dwindling numbers B&B fans now have the dubious privilege of viewing 16 more episodes of this farce. The CW decided to cut production costs and tried to sell the viewers a bill of goods. However, the viewers aren’t buying it. Cancelling The Secret Circle was a significant error in judgment.

  • Millie

@Shaz i meant for a cancelled show last year. should have clarified that a bit.

  • Lane

Considering that TSC was getting 0.5 in May, there’s no way that its ratings now (if it was still on) would be better than what BATB is getting at the moment. Now, BATB may very well end up getting canceled as well, but thinking that the CW regrets its decision to cancel TSC is completely delusional.

  • Ermac

TSC fans are so pathetic. Wanting other shows to fail just because their awful shows has been CANCELLED.

  • Shaz

BATB didn’t fall to a 0.6 rating. It’s ratings so far have been:

So basically after the premiere high, it stabilized VERY quickly in the 0.6-0.7 range.

  • Mike

I loved secret circle and now I lb&tb. I hope it winds up better that tsc and stays on the air.

  • martine

It will stay on the air. No doubt on that really. Its stabilized, and it might go up.

  • Ally

It’s because Beauty and the Beast is worse than Secret Circle, and the ratings are just as bad. So really, no point in canceling TSC when the show they replaced it with is just as bad, ratings and story-wise.

  • martine

@ Tom, what is the problem? The Secret Circle wasn’t cancelled so it could be replaced. It was cancelled because it had awful ratings. It never even got as high as .6 for most of its tenure it was worse then Nikita, and thats saying something. Obviously something had to eventually go into its time slot. But if you want to blame some show for the cancelation of TSC then the thing to blame would be the shows that existed when it was on. Like Nikita, Supernatural or whatever. You make no sense at all. If people had wanted to watch the Secret Circle it would be on now.

Honestly, I think the cw has finally understood the direction it should go, so i can see it doing a major overhaul next year and cleaning house. They will approach a sort of make it or break it mode. So even though this year they sort of had “mixed signs” by ordering both arrow and carrie diaries, i think next year they will all be from the first type, though they will probably still have a night per week for the later type of shows.

    Hart of Dixie
    90210 (Final Season)

New Drama (i remember reading about a show they were developing that would fit very nicely with supernatural)

New Drama (i am sure they have something in development that fits with arrow)

    The Vampire Diaries
New Drama (I would go for the selection)

Beauty and the Beast or Cult

I also think they will probably order a 4th show for midseason, like they did this year with Cult, which should allow them to cancel a failed drama come midseason. Moving Supernatural again and breaking its pairing with Arrow sucks, but the problem is that unless Cult is a massive hit and can take care of Tuesdays, the cw will need something established on that night, as they cannot give the night to two freshman shows just like that. The Vampire Diaries and Arrow already have a respective night each, so it has to be Supernatural!
