Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 11, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.37
Emily Owens, M.D. 0.49
Gossip Girl final season 0.50

Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.77
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 1.01

CW rookie The Beauty & The Beast is currently a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Its ratings are too close to sophomore Hart Of Dixie's for me to make a call between them at this point (particularly if you factor out the BATB premiere). I hope there's some separation later in the season that will clear things up, but based on recent CW history that may be wishful thinking.

What is very clear is that a cadre of vocal fans of the 2011-12 casualty The Secret Circle hate The Beauty & The Beast with the fire of a thousand suns.

While the reasons for each fan's hate may be different, that doesn't stop me from asking what our readers think. Vote as many times as your fingers will allow!

Emily Owens, M.D. is certain to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Tom Spam (used metaphorically this context) = mass posting similar comments without adding anything new. That’s what you and a lot of other TSC fans seem to be doing. Burn Notice is one of my favorite too and if it does better than BATB then *shrug* because it’s not in competition with BATB.

I think the only things that will save BATB is if Carrie Diaries and Cult are DOA and BATB maintains a 0.6 or higher rating. That’s a loooong shot, but there have been a lot of unpredictable renewals in recent years (Dollhouse, Chuck, Fringe, Nikita) so who knows? One thing’s for sure, if/when BATB is cancelled in the spring, I’m not going to boycott CW and go on and on message boards about how crappy all their new shows are. :P

@Adrian BATB won’t get a pity renewal. CW already has one successful freshman show this year — Arrow. They can cancel the rest of their freshman shows without worrying about saving face (if that is even a concern).

I wanted to like TSC, but did not care what happened to any of the characters. Don’t know if it was just to many of them to get attached to or just bad acting. I did not like the first 3 eps of BATB, but it has gotten much better and I like Vincent. Hoping the writing does not go back to being cheesy, really bad at the start.

  • Moe

@Bill, what do you mean by this?

“No question that Arrow has done very well for them, but counting the Supernatural ratings increase as “all plus” fails to take into account the ratings disaster on Friday since it was moved. The CW has extinction level ratings on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.”

Are you saying you think it was a mistake to move Supernatural, or that the ratings increase for that show shouldn’t be such a positive factor? Sorry, I have a cold so maybe I’m just not reading it right, but it sounds like you are saying that Supernatural’s increase in ratings really isn’t that great?

@Mickey. I still say you can’t really gauge how Supernatural will do without a Arrow lead in based merely on the premiere’s ratings, since it went up against the first presidential debates, which did HUGE ratings that night. I think we need another episode or two of Supernatural airing without a new Arrow as a lead in before we say that Supernatural won’t do a 1.0 without it.

  • KS

No I think Bill is saying that, moving Supernatural to Wednesday has of course made the Wednesday night better but that move ruined Friday nights for CW. Friday ratings have become disasters this season.

    CW 2013-2014 schedule:

    8: Hart of Dixie
    9: The Carrie Diaries

    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    8: Arrow
    9: Amazon (new)

    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Selection (new)

    8: 90210 (10 episode final season)
    9: Nikita (full final season)

Meridian Hills (new) and Electropolis (new) for midseason.

  • david

In the since of ratings the CW now has one and a half good ratings night. Arrow and Super Natural on Wednesday nights and TVD on Thursday nights. As Bill pointed out Monday, Tuesday and Fridays are terrible in the ratings. They really need to work on thoughs nights next year first. So far from the show scrips they have been looking at it does appear they are thinking more about scifi and action types of shows more. But as has been stated we have know idea out of all of the scrips are going to be sent to pilot or not. and we wond know for the next few months or so.

  • Moe

@KS got it, thanks, that makes sense. Like I said, have a cold so it’s a little fuzzy going on tonight, LOL!

  • Mika

I went with number 3 because honestly I will not throw my viewership to a network that has no intention on developing good shows and just throws stuff on tv and cancels it after 1 season. TSC was an awesome show I do not wish ill will on the CW I just will not watch the channel anymore. Neither will most of my family members in their respective home who were TSC and Ringer fans.

    Possible 2013-2014 CW Schedule

    The Carrie Diaries
    90210/Meridian Hills

    The Hundred

    The Vampire Diaries
    Tomorrow People or Embrace

    Hart of Dixie

Midseason: Electropolis, NIKITA, and The Selection.

  • Davis

    I seriously thought about that!!!!!!!!!!

  • Davis

    @ David

The Secret Circle never dropped to a .4. It did however slump to a .5 for 2 episodes.

  • Nick

The whole point of renewing Nikita is so it can get 22 more episodes for syndication. Putting it for midseason completely ruins that.

  • Chris

    Bring secret circle back!!!!

  • Justin121

    I wish you’d take out option # 2.

    a) Their show looks better for having failed, too!

    b) The CW screwed over TSC (even though it didn’t)!

    c) The voices in their heads keep telling them to!

I voted for a), and don’t b) is fair to the CW :(

  • Justin121

Question: is it possible for Emily Owens to recieve the back-9 or not?

As of now, CW has two open slots in second half of the season:

Tuesday at nine IF Emily Owens doesn’t recieve a back order

and Friday in place of America’s Next Top Model.

They only have one show to fill one of those slots: Cult.

So it is possible that all of: Carrie Diaries, Emily Owens, Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, and Cult to be airing in the new year.

CW could actually have half of its schedule consist of new shows airing in the Spring, with one new/one old show every night of the week.

    That could be fun :D

and then, they could decide what to do for next Fall. I think that’s the best outcome for the CW.

  • Allison

When Gossip Girl and 90210 end, I will stop watching the CW. Nothing good comes from watching this network anymore. It seems like they are cancelling all the new shows, and I will not get hooked on a new one, only to get tossed by the wayside. The CW shows I watched: Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill, Privileged, Melrose Place, Life Unexpected, Hellcats, Ringer, and The Secret Circle. Looking back, the only show I’m glad got cancelled is Privileged, because Lucy Hale is now on Pretty Little Liars (on ABC Family), which I watch religiously. I consider ABC Family my new go-to network. I’m still watching Gossip Girl and 90210 because I want to finish out the series, but I can’t wait until they’re over. They’ve gotten ridiculous. Both casts have gone through every possible guy/girl pairing. I draw the line at Serena/Chuck, Annie/Navid, Adrianna/Liam. And may I just mention Ivy/Rufus, yuck. There are some things you wish you could unsee.

  • Eric_Philly

Did you know the Chiller network picked up Secret Circle for syndication? Weird.

  • BrookeRobertson

SERIOUSLY? BATB IS FANTASTIC I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Emily

you left out because its just a terrible show, I think most people hate it, not just secret circle fans

  • Tom

C’mon Allison! Please reconsider. I can’t believe that you’d even consider passing up another round of The LA Complex next summer.
