Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-November 11, 2012):

CW rookie The Beauty & The Beast is currently a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Its ratings are too close to sophomore Hart Of Dixie's for me to make a call between them at this point (particularly if you factor out the BATB premiere). I hope there's some separation later in the season that will clear things up, but based on recent CW history that may be wishful thinking.

What is very clear is that a cadre of vocal fans of the 2011-12 casualty The Secret Circle hate The Beauty & The Beast with the fire of a thousand suns.

While the reasons for each fan's hate may be different, that doesn't stop me from asking what our readers think. Vote as many times as your fingers will allow!

Emily Owens, M.D. is certain to be canceled.

How can Nikita with absolutely "look away" bad ratings be "likely to be renewed"? The pull of a fourth season for syndication purposes is one of the strongest forces in the TV universe. Read more about it here.

Because the folks at the CW seem to like short final seasons for their veteran shows, 90210 could be renewed for a 13 episode final season next year, even with its terrible ratings, that's why it's just a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal. They could certainly re-ealuate their penchant for short final seasons if schedule time next season gets tight though. Read more about it here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think that the four top shows on the renew/cancel index should tell the CW something – they are all supernatural/superhero shows. I actually like B&B and love Arrow. As a fan of TSC I was mad that it was not renewed while HOD is – this made me hate HOD not B&B. I watched HOD last season sometimes but will never watch it again because it was renewed over TSC. I don’t see HOD getting great ratings. Also have never watched Emily Owens – the previews looked dumb. Carrie is just another NYC high schoolers show – too similar to Gossip Girl IMO. Cult looks interesing though. If I were the CW, I would cancel GG (already cancelled), 90210 (announce this as its final season and just wrap it up), Emily Owens, HOD, and ANTM. I’d give Nikita a different timeslot or pair it with a better show and I’d have 5 new shows next season.

  • deborah

I think the ONLY shows worth watching on CW now are “Supernatural” and “Arrow.”

  • Tabitha

@Mi I’m saying have alternate ending like the last 10-15 minutes of the show, you know a little “movie magic” When they shoot the final episode, have another shot they can replace over any cliffhanger, if the show is cancelled.

  • Tabitha

@Bill Yeah I know but for me, that has only happened on CW. I can’t say that has happened to me on any other network yet. The other shows I watched were all renewed.

  • Mi

@Tabitha filming a different ending is in the hands of the show runners, not the network’s hands, and they could’ve filmed two endings had they wanted to imo.

  • buttondiet

Seeing those green smilies next to Supernatural after 8 years is impressive!

  • TVDxItachi

Imagine if the CW put Arrow after TVD?! I believe the ratings would be even higher, maybe a consistent 1.5. As for the Time Slot, its just the quality of the show thats cursed. I watched the premire of TSC and Loved it with all expection low, it blew me out the water. But episode 2 died and lost all my interest and i never came back. Especially with the Opening TSC “la,la,la,la,la” or something like that was so gay that it drove me away being a male and all. The show just really sucked in th beginning, thats why it lost alot of views, first impressions count. CW Cult trailer looks insanely good, it looks so none CW that its scary. Hopefully Cult is good and does well ratings wise.

  • TVDxItachi

I swear these young tv viewers are really brain dead. Arrow is decent with alot of potential with many flaws and these Young teens think its the best new show this fall, lol. Its getting better but comparing it To TVD is absurd. Arrow is HorseS##T compared to TVD. And i actually watch Arrow.

  • Jason

Because they’re immature little babies who cling to a false hope that Secret Circle will somehow magically return if they just show enough bitterness. Sorry, kiddos, but your little show didn’t ramp up the action quick enough and lost all but a scant few viewers. It’s up to the audience to keep shows alive; Secret Circle was directed at YOU, little girls, and you failed your show and stars. So stop whining about it now.

  • Sam

Reasons The Secret Circle was canceled…

    YES, it was the 3rd highest rated show on the network BUT;

    1. Viewership decreased significantly over the course of it’s run, even with a solid lead-in.
    2. The show was special effects based. The cost of the show VS the viewership meant it HAD to be cancelled.
    3. Much like ‘Ringer’, the show started VERY slow, and only really picked up into a truly entertaining storyline in the last 6-ish episodes. By that time, people were bored, had tuned out, and the show was cancelled.

To TSC fans: DEAL WITH IT!

  • Jason50

@TVDxItachi- The Cult trailers did look good, I was excited for the show. Unfortunatly the pilot was horrible, worse than BATB pilot IMO. I caught the pilot at comic-con in July, maybe they fixed things up since then. Unless you need to watch all things CW, I would watch The Following instead. Similar show and probably was the best pilot I watched this season.

  • Tom

@Sam You make some interesting points about the reasons for the demise of The Secret Circle and I believe they are worth further discussion.

First of all, your retentionista argument has been discussed ad nauseum on this site in various contexts and has been generally dismissed.

Second, the storyline for TSC seems more drawn out than it actually was because of the way the CW broadcast it. TSC went on hiatus for an entire month from mid-February to mid-March. This was after having already been off from early November 2011 to early January 2012. It was then broadcast in increasingly dispersed blocks. For example, with three new shows in March, two in April and two in May. Unlike the Vampire Diaries, TSC was not an established show and I’m convinced that the frequent interruptions in the airing of new episodes made it difficult to follow the plot. In fact, the CW subsequently moved its season back a month to address this very problem.

Third, the ratings did not REQUIRE the CW to cancel anything. Hart of Dixie had already declined to its present dismal ratings by January 2012. Nikita was concluding a two year arc to equally poor ratings. In contrast, TSC was positioned to begin a second season story arc that had some potential to attract viewers. However, the CW made a very conscious decision to settle for continuing two low rated shows because they were cheap rather than to test the potential of TSC for growth. In other words, Pedowitz et al. made this decision for their own supposed financial benefitf but certainly didn’t HAVE to cancel anything.

Fourth, TSC has a dedicated and tenacious fan base which feels that Pedowitz et al. kicked them the curb. You may not like hearing about it, but I can’t feel bad about criticizing a network that most recently has graced the television medium with masterpieces such as the LA Complex, Emily Owen and B&B. So, please excuse me if I’m offending your sensibilities, but I’m not planning to drop this matter just yet.

  • Tiffany

I loved TSC but I love BATB too….

If they cancel it I will never watch another new CW show again. And 90210 better get a final season!

  • Nathan

Haven’t watched BATB yet. TSC should have been given a season 2. At least TVD, SN, and Arrow are staying strong. Nikita lost a viewer with Season 3. That getting renewed for 4 slaps all TSC fans in the face. But Person of Interest is the major contributor.

    2013-2014 schedule:

    8:00PM – Hart of Dixie
    9:00PM – NEW DRAMA

    8:00PM – America’s Next Top Model / NEW DRAMA
9:00PM – Beauty and the Beast

    8:00PM – The Vampire Diaries
    9:00PM – Supernatural

    8:00PM – Arrow
    9:00PM – NEW DRAMA

    8:00PM – Nikita
    9:00PM – 90210

I think it would be good for the CW to move The Vampire Diaries to Wednesday and pair it with Supernatural. This combo worked in the 2008-2009 season and it would permit to Supernatural to grow more.
If Arrow airs on Thursday it could be the perfect lead-in for a new Show (all the Shows that premiered after The Vampire Diaries died).

  • Justin121

I think The Vamp Diaries would work better as a lead-out than a lead-in.

That’d be the solution for CW Thursdays (down side: it’d have to compete with Grey’s Anatomy and Glee for a similar type of viewers, though if it can hoold its own agains X-Factor, who’s to say it can’t do the same vs. Glee, and Grey’s skews older).

Still, no Vamp Die fan can sit through an hour of television after Vamp Die. That’s the way it is.

  • Millie

i don’t know why i’m doing this, but i’m going to say this. i am a TSC fan and still hope one day we might get a TV movie to tie up loose end. i joined the fight to get it back and have done everything in my power. The Cw reason for canceling the make no sense.

    1. Rating it was the third highest rated show on the network. the DVR ratings gave it a boost and BTW it was a good seller on itunes. the night after the finale the last episode was like in the top 10 of most bought shows on itunes.

    2. money: okay it costed a lot of money, but i’m sure if the cw had talked to the producers of the show they could have brought a lot of the cost down. also they spent a lot more money tryingt o get these new pilots that had no chance up (come on Emily Owens.)

    3. this one really pisses me off. in an interview the president of the cw said the reason TSC was canclled was because there were no hot guys.

this show has showed a loyal fanbase and as mentioned here the huge time periods where the show didn’t air a new epsidoe then aired one or two episodes and then went back on break didn’t help. peopel jsut set their DVRs and went to watch somethign w/ a more predictable schedule. t

what really pisses me off about TSC cancellation was at first it was announced the show was renewed and five minutes later they said no wait ti was cancelled. i truthfully believe it deserved that second season or a tv movie just to give the fans closer. we worked hard for the show and i’m ind of mad we got no respond at all from betworks after all the hard wrok we did.

i mean how many other fanbases raised over 7 thousand dollars for make a witch save a witch foundation to get their show back or delivered over 300 thousand fake gold coins to networks. okay i’m done besides this one thing. i don’t watch beauty and the beast one mainly because i think it looks stupid.

  • herpderp

LOL @ all these disgruntled TSC fans with a butthurt grudge against the network. They’re almost as bad as Nikita fans.

  • Dave S.

B&B has really grown on me. I like TSC but did not tune in every week. I find I look forward to B&B after TVD. Nice combo. Hopefully they will give it a chance and the ratings will pick up.

  • Sandra

I don’t hate B&B for taking TSC timeslot, I HATE the assinine HOD for being renewed instead of TSC!! HOD is a stupid show with characters that don’t act like normal people act and it gets terrible ratings!
