The overriding theme of the Renew/Cancel Index posts this week is "Why are the ratings failures still on the air"? A bit more detail about that in the ABC post this week.

In NBC's case, while I'm predicting that both Up All Night and Guys With Kids are "likely canceled" I also expect both to air most or all their ordered episodes. That's 13 episodes for GwK and thirteen eleven plus a seemingly desperate addition of five multi-cam episodes for Up All Night.

At current ratings levels I'd guess that NBC makes no decision on Chicago Fire until the end of the season, where, highly dependent on spring ratings for all NBC dramas, it could still go either way. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

up all night is actually only 10 + 5 multicam episodes. they only ordered an additional 2 episodes to the 13-episode order (and 10 were single cam).

  • taylor

** 10 + 6. 3 additional episodes. why can’t we edit on this site haha

  • Ram510

Somebody save Guys With Kids!!!!! Whitney???

  • Dan S

UAN is out of my DVR cue on the news it’s going multi-cam. Unless a show is single cam I can’t watch it. Good to see RVN as the highest rated of NBC’s new fall shows & will definitely get a 2nd season despite the naysayers.

  • brandon

I actually really love Guys with Kids. It’d probably do well in a TGIF block with Last Man Standing and Malibu Country on ABC.

  • Brian

Glad to see RVN still at the top of the ratings :)

  • Jeff (Canada)

Sometime during my life I’d love to see a network just say “screw it we’re gonna cancel almost everything” and start over from scratch. I’m not saying NBC is going to do that this year, but all I’m saying is that this is one of the years they’ve come closest to doing it.

  • TVDude

I agree that they are right now, but I think it’ll come down to how they do in the spring vs the rest of NBC’s average. I mean, with The Voice falling, chances are that trend will continue tonight. What will happen to Go On and The New Normal? Those two shows have been hiding behind a powerhouse show. If they get poor ratings there, it makes you wonder how they would hold up Wednesday at 8pm and/or 8:30pm.

Looking at next season, I have a hard time believing that NBC will waste Tuesday’s post Voice timeslot on Go On and The New Normal. At most, one of the shows will stick, but not both. I agree they will get renewed, but surely NBC is looking at their long-term potential. I know we don’t look beyond this season, but does the network?

With that said, that doesn’t help Guys with Kids or Up All Night’s case. There’s still time for either of them to improve and I think UAN’s fate will be decided almost entirely on its spring return. Can a ratings miracle happen in the spring? I think it’s possible. Unlikely, but if NBC’s scripted average continues to fall for its other shows, I wouldn’t completely write it off; NBC hasn’t.

Poor NBC is in so much trouble next year. By the way lovin’ the idea of a 3 month mid season break for Revolution, let’s kill the momentum for our only returning show in 2013-2014.

  • smgpugfaw

First season of UAN was pretty decent. This year is horrible. Not surprised that the shakey ratings have fallen hard.

  • Potato

@JeffCanada– I mean, it hasn’t happened all at once, but if you think about a couple years ago, what does NBC have left besides a couple of the thursday night comedies.

  • Tommy M.

I love all the hate for hiatuses. Revolution is exactly the type of show that should take a hiatus vs airing repeats. If the hiatus hurts the show it has more to do with the show’s weakness than it does with how it’s scheduled.

  • joel

The whole point of the hiatus is to kill the downward momentum of Revolution and extend the life of the series. Nothing stupid about that.

  • The Yipster

Of all the new series I’ve been watching this season, I’ve been enjoying Chicago Fire the best!

  • BigBrotherFan

You know, I know GWK isnt the BEST series to air but it`s really not that bad, at all. Jesse Bratford is a good enough actor and really likable lead. I`m sure if it followed GOON it be a TNN levels.

NBC since you gave TNN a full season please change the creative direction of this show. Ellen Barkin character was absent last episode and it was very dull. If something isn`t done I will give up alltogether. This is the ONLY time its okay for NBC to do some retooling.

That goes for you, too GOON! The first few episodes where good but now its turning into more of the same and I dont know how long they can keep this .going. Matthew Perry is great in it and so is HAROLD from Harold and Kumar series

Enjoy Chicago Fire alot, real bored with Jesse Spencers dragged out plot. More focus on on Taylor and Lauras characters would be nice.

  • jimbo

If GWK was on after Voice, it could do well like ‘Go On’. Give it another chance!! Please cancel Whitney.

  • Ricky

Wow, still so optimistic about RVN. That’s fine, I guess, but who are we kidding, this poor show’s going down.

Two more winners in two more days? It could be done! http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/10/09/play-the-elimination-game/152342/comment-page-43/#comments

  • samfan

GWK is a very new good show, it is the new modern family, modern family did not start with such a huge success, if GWK was behind the voice, it would win just like go on and the new normal, which are very boring, but they have ratings because they are behind the voice. Let GWK go to 2 seasons NBC before you cancell it, a lot of family members likes it, maybe the most is to move it to Friday at 8pm since it is a family show, Whitney is such a bad lead in for GWK. Big fan of GWK

  • Oliver

Modern Family was a hit from the start.

  • Ram510

Guys With Kids should at least get a full season I think it can grow from here especially now that NBC is giving it actual promos. It’s a very likeable with great chemistry throughout the cast

NBC don’t let this one slip away!!!!
