Glad to see that General Hospital is finally getting the viewers it deserve! It has been the best soap on tv for the past couple of weeks by far! Now all I need is Lucy to make her return with the rest of GH alumni and watch ratings rise even higher!

  • MWF

Looks like the right balance has been struck and that there is indeed enough of an audience to sustain the four remaining soaps.

The GH turnaround is remarkable but completely justified – it’s a great brand, it has a rich history and appears to have a creative team in place who have been able to capitalize on this while taking the show and storytelling in daytime in a unique new direction with faster paced story arcs and significant twists on a weekly basis.

Long may it continue – I bet ABC can’t believe it but they made the right decision to keep GH. Who would have believed a year ago many on this board had written off GH and soaps in general. What a turnaround!

  • lampshade

GH and DOOL have been unmissable lately. DOOL is very well written, but needs to quicken the pace to match GH. I can’t sit through a whole episode of BB like I used to, which is a pity-not sure ratings will hold up after Stephanie departs. YR…. words fail me, a total mess.

  • James

FV/RC have their A game…they are mostly doing right imo. I love GH since they took over, but to be fair, I only started watching when James Franco came on in late 2009.

  • Jeff

Believe me James, this is the best GH has been since Wendy Riche was the EP in the 90′s. A few tweaks, and this show would be near perfect. I miss OLTL a lot, but happy that Frank and Ron are working their magic over at GH.

  • Nick

GH is a beast! In 18-34 ratings too. Good for it.

  • diana

This is good to see. I know I’M LOVING GH right now! Robert, Anna, Duke and Faison?! What’s not to love? :D

  • Matt

GH hit over 3MILLION an a 2.3 on Wednesday!! That’s the highest rated episode since last February of 2011! GH is only 400K viewers away from being #3 in viewers! And it is neck-n-neck with Y&R in both 18-49 categories!

  • Brooklyn

Y & R is awful. Not sure which team is worse. It reads like it is trying for a dramatic play. Less background music, long scenes. Problem is that it’s a soap and should act like one. I think this is the begining of the end. CBS won’t keep it when it drops into the 2.0′s.

  • BG

GH deserves the increase!! Guza destoryed GH, but RC has completely turned it around. It is great to see more storylines that don’t revolve completely around Sonny and the mob.

  • NBC is awesome

Am I they only one that doesn’t see any improvement quality wise? the whole fake Duke is so unbelievable. First off, I don’t care about some mobster from the 80s, and second I don’t care about this weird Faison guy.

  • NBC is awesome

Only interesting story lines on Gh right now are Sabrina and her crush, Lulu/dante wanting a baby, and SpinEllie triangle. The rest is blah

  • lll

    @NBC is awesome
    I agree.
The fake duke storyline is the only thing I don’t like about General Hospital right now. The rest is watchable.

  • Rodney

Love to hear the comments about Y&R, the best show on the airwaves right now…as the numbers reflect….but I just have to say, I would love to know what the watchers such as Brooklyn and lampshade are referring to as both made negative comments about the show.
As a writer myself, 2 book published and on the market for sale, 3 more waiting in the wings, I have taken a great deal of time over the years to watch the way soap operas were written and produced. The Young and the Restless is finally getting back to that style of storytelling after years of being a mere shadow of it’s former self. For anyone who is complaining right now about the way the show is written or produced, does the name William J. Bell mean ANYTHING to you? He was quite possibly, the best storyteller of our lifetime. His stories were not rushed and in some cases, took years to play out, only to weave themselves into several different sub-stories along the way. Why do you think that the show reached heights of 8′s and 9′s in the ratings back then….I will tell you why…because it was good. Brooklyn stated that the scenes are long. Hello…William J. Bell was known for writing scenes that when aired on TV sometimes, would run 7 or 8 minutes long…WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. Life doesn’t have a fast-forward button and at times, it takes a while to get the point across and a good scene will allow that. It is sad to me that the audiences of today want such a fast paced way of storytelling. Explain to me what the point of having something come to a climax over a 3 week period is, as opposed to say a 2 YEAR period. In my opinion, the pay-off was always much better after 2 YEARS for the simple fact that you have invested so much time in the characters by that point and you were really rooting for the ending. I guess today’s audience isn’t as loyal as they were in the 80′s and 90′s and that shows in their posts. They don’t want to take the time that is needed to become invested, they want everything to happen RIGHT NOW. In case you (the CURRENT soap opera viewer) has forgotten, these shows are not supposed to represent REALITY TV. They are serials….long and drawn out…showing step by step movements of a story line and making the viewers WAIT for the outcome after months and months of build-up. Think of it way, the slower a show moves, the less the writers need to be inventive as they can be more intimate with characters. If a show moves as such a fast pace, they need to come up with more ideas to keep the viewers interested and in the past several years, that clearly hasn’t been the case as the audiences have been leaving in droves. Does anyone out there remember how long the Luke and Laura story line went on….I do, I watched…every day. It went on for years. It wasn’t all wrapped up in a few months. That wasn’t Gloria Monty’s style just as it wasn’t William J. Bell’s style to ROB the audience of a good story by having it travel at warp speed just to get it told quickly. So, I will leave you with this….if you are still a soap opera viewer…..remember what it was like to look at the clock at ten minutes before the hour and know that you were going to have to TUNE IN TOMORROW simply because what you wanted to see happen wasn’t going to on that days show. Don’t take the last four remaining shows and try to make them something they are not. Just slow down and take the hour of your lives that you devote to these shows and let them do what they were originally intended to do for the housewives who watched then…..take you out of your hectic and busy lives and let you live someone else’s life for that time frame.

Don’t get me wrong I support General Hospital but, they still not in the number one top rating they are always #3 spot in total viewers.

  • Derrick

Y&R and B&B have been good lately!!!
Y&R did go up in household!!

  • JONNYSBRO

WOWSA RC/RV u go boys. They are going back to old school GH with vets galore, history respected. The Duke/Faison reveal was genius, AJ’s return fabulous, Edward’s death I will be sobbing and a great big Nurses Ball planned. All we need is Genie/Laura and GH will go through the roof. This was a show dead man walking to now kicking ass and taking names. Its a freaking miracle. They are doing everything ANTI-GUZA. Its so combo of the best of the Monty years with the Riche years. GH has been the most stellar show and I am hooked/riveted. GO GH GET IT. RC/FV U BOYS SHOW US HOW ITS DONE.

  • Greg

Here’s my list of who I want to see return to General Hospital in 2013:

    Laura played by Genie Francis
Laura Templeton played by Janine Turner
Jackie Templeton played by Demi Moore
(Why shouldn’t Janine and Demi return to GH…it is the show that made both of them famous, afterall)
Tiffany played by Sharon Wyatt (after her FULL recovery, of course! Godspeed!)
    Kin Shriner as Scotty Baldwin

And the return of THE ICE PRINCESS…that storyline was the best ever on GH…it catapulted GH into the ratings stratosphere that summer! I remember their set of that island. It was just classic soap opera storytelling…fantastical but believable! LOVED IT!!!

  • Brad

    @ Rodney

Your right. It was those complex stories that got Y&R 9.4 million viewers a day in 1994! It wasn’t fast paced storytelling. IMO I think the faster the writing is the sloppier it is because the writers make mistakes and sometimes it dosen’t make sense. Slower, complex storytelling is what viewers want. Also, there is a storyline coming up with Christine/Nina/Paul so I think Y&R it getting good again. GH has been fabulous! I have loved every minute of it. I think it will continue to rise.

  • Mike

Rodney, Sorry I don’t see the greatness that you refer to either. Y&R is just so unwatchable for me. Maria Bell had ruined so much and Josh Griffith just so far is doing nothing for me. I can hardly sit through an episode. I still DVR it every day but hardly ever watch much of any episode.

B&B is the only soap that is must see for me. It is just good classic drama for me now. As I said the other day in one of the press release threads I hope Susan Flannery gets one final Emmy for her mantle. She has been a class act.

Greg — Who knows you may get your wish now that it seems that the new crew realizes that focusing on GH’s characters is what will bring the ratings up. I am reading comments from people who were totally against GH a few months ago now praising them. And all the praise is always for the GH related stories.

I watch GH up until 2000 — quit both GH and DAys about that time. I tested GH back in February just to see Robin’s exit and tried watching about a month. It was awful.

My DVR is so full during the day now. I DVR The Price is Right, Y&R, B&B, The Chew, The Talk, & Let’s Make A Deal. I watch more stuff than I should be. I grew up watching daytime TV when there was a mix of talk, game and soaps. My balance right now is great. Kind of like reliving my childhood. LOL So no time to take on any other soaps or shows right now, but over the holidays I might try to catch a couple of eppys of GH just to check it out. I don’t expect too much though since I am not a fan of Ron C.’s writing style. I quit One Life To Live in 2009 (had watched since 1975) due to some of his stories and the campiness of his writing.
