@ Brad. Glad to see that I am not a misfit on this island that I seen to find myself on. Keep watching and I will too. Hopefully we can see the Grande Dame of daytime (Y&R)in the 4’s or even 5’s where the rating are concerned and even get the others back into the high 3’s and low 4’s also. Wouldn’t that be great!!! It will take time just as it has taken several years for them to slide to the dismal rating points they are now, but I still have faith in this genre. The daytime soap opera isn’t dead in my opinion…not by a long shot. As long as there are lives to live, there are stories to write about. Thanks for the POSITIVE feedback….sometimes it isn’t always out there.

  • Rodney

@ Mike…I couldn’t agree with you more where Maria Bell is concerned. I truly feel badly for Josh as he has been given the reins to a sled that has not only slid off of the nice snowy path, but one that has also flipped over and mostly been crushed by years of bad writing and producing. He and Jill have a HUGE task in front of them to re-build the show to even a fraction of what it was under the late Wm. J. Bell, but in time I think it will happen. Don’t give up on her yet…the true Y&R will return… Have a great day and thanks for the post in response to mine.

I am liking the ratings of GH as they rise but until we see 3 million and on a regular basis, I think GH is not safe yet…..

  • Brooklyn

I love y and r. The change bothers me out if concern. It’s pretentious now. I do not like it. The music less long scenes are awful. They need background music to hide flaws. As a long time viewer who is no longer watching I am sure my opinion represents a lit of people who might shut the tv. I will give it a try later and hope it transitions better. I somehow doubt it will. The style reminds me of the Procter and Gambel soups.

  • Brooklyn

P and g soaps not soups.

  • Rodney

I so see your concern Brooklyn, and I am right there with you on the background music. The episode where Sheila and Lauren fought in the farmhouse and the fire started (circa 1994) would not have been what it was without the background music…it can literally make or break a show and I will agree, right now, Y&R has moved away from the background music that made the show great since the beginning. It was one of the only shows on television that still used music that it had created nearly 30 years prior. Just to hear some of those scores takes me back to being home as a teenager with snow falling outside and a school cancellation. Ah….memories. Thanks for your great response!!! But don’t give up on her yet….and keep watching so you can see the improvements as they happen. Smiles!!!

  • Brooklyn

Thanks Rodney. Been watching since 81 and am 43 now and so it is like watching family. Always rooting for y and r.

  • Mike

Rich — I agree with you. I don’t think any show is safe either at this point unless they can sustain these ratings.

I know I will get a lot of stones and ugly words thrown at me for some of what I might say but who cares.

One thing that I think 2 of the 3 networks soaps have going for them is that the lineups as a whole are working. ABC’s lineup is doing better ratings wise as a whole than it has done in years. GMA is up. The View struggled a few weeks but now is back up. The Chew is hitting ratings highs. GH is up. Katie has been rising in the last few weeks (even though she isn’t on all ABC stations or affiliantes) but I include her because she is in a lot. The lineup just seems to work for now.

CBS’s press release last week showed that even with Y&R down on average it is still up from last year. And the whole daytime lineup on CBS is up. The Talk is getting it’s highest ratings ever.

To me NBC is the tossup. Days is up and then back down and then up again. But the Today show is struggling too. Can they afford to have 2 shows struggling? And those 2 shows are basically their network lineup.

The biggest thing that bothers me about the soaps futures is the fact that the replacement shows are building audiences. And they are so much cheaper.

I know that they keep cutting soaps to make them more profitable, but I am not a fan of cheap looking soaps. I love on B&B that the homes look like they belong to folks in the fashion industry. I hate limited sets and stuff like that.

To me in a world that is so caught up in HD and faster and better things — if you make a soap or show look cheap, you are just asking for people to disregard it.

@Brooklyn — I go back to day one in 1973 with Y&R. I’ve seen a lot of changes. I loved the show up until about the time that Gloria and her family drama came on. I love the character, but the show about that time started losing its way. I’ve continued watching until this year, but haven’t sat through a full episode in a long time.

  • Rodney

Been watching consistently since 2001 and off and of before that back to ’89. I am 42 myself. I had, and still do, hold the highest respect for William J. Bell and have honored him in the way that I write my own novels today. I have taken many of his styles and used them in my writing. My readers are always anticipating my next novel so I must be doing something right. I think he would be proud. Thanks again for the POSITIVE words. Smiles!!!

  • Rodney

Just curious: what are your opinions on having Y&R go back to having the final scene fade to black and then list the executive producer like it used to instead of the “next on…” format they have now? In my opinion, if you want to see what comes next…..WATCH IT. Just sayin’….

  • Brooklyn

Like Mike, sets are important. I like the total fantasy look. I like the cartoon and heavily produced look.

  • LynTX

    @Rodney, @Brad –
So appreciate your take(s) on Y&R and agree. I too miss the storytelling. Another thing that I feel takes away from the soaps are ‘spoilers’ that basically tells the stories weeks in advance. I’ve seen so many posts (on the various MBs) where viewers depend on spoilers to keep up with the shows instead of watching.

So many spoilers, spumors lessens the suspense that keep viewers on edge for ‘what comes next’. I’m guilty of it……..

  • Stephen Judson

General Hospital is one of ABC top daytime shows. I think it is safe to say that it will last through 2013 at least.

  • Pinevalleylover

@stephen i agree! GH is awesome!!

  • Greg

With DOOL bringing back Kristen, and having her and John reflect on their past (mentioning Marlena being possessed) and then ushering in Eric Brady who is NOW a priest…makes me wonder. Is DOOL going to do another demonic possession storyline? OH I HOPE SO!!! When DOOL had Marlena possessed by the devil way back when the ratings SKYROCKETED!!! It was MUST SEE CAMP TV!!!

I know there were haters of that storyline BUT there are a lot of people who love that kind of stuff. I loved the storyline where we thought Marlena was possessed again and was killing everyone off…only to find out she wasn’t killing them and these good folks had never died. Ratings went up then too. But then they dragged that storyline out (those on the “island”) and ratings started to dip quickly. If a soap is going to “go there” with the fantastical its best to wrap things up quickly…meaning, have the storyline be a good 3 to 4 month arc. Then move back to “reality”. But never have the characters act like “it never happened” when it did. DOOL is smart by having the show address Marlena’s demonic possession with characters bringing it up.

I could see either Kristen or Sami being the next to be possessed by the devil on DOOL. While I’d LOVE to see Sami possessed, I personally think Kristen would make the best choice. Also, I would like for DOOL to somehow make Kristen a true flesh and blood Dimera…somehow. Having her as Stefano’s adopted daughter just doesn’t really do it for me.

As far as Ron C’s campy writing, GH’s greatest time was during its campiest. Let’s face it. The left-handed boy and freezing the world are out there.

As far as it always being third among total viewers, as I said before, Y&R and B&B have been ahead of GH for quite a few years. It would be great if it changed, but the point is, in the 18-49 demographic, GH is only 1/10th of a point behind Y&R, placing it as number 2. That is what advertisers look at.

  • Glen

It’s really gratifying to see GH’s rising ratings. FV and RC have made the show more entertaining and compelling than its been in eons. And, I happen to love Ron’s tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. I’m also loving seeing the Qs and other iconic GH vets front-and-center again. Kudos!

  • RJ

To all the soap fans, you’re welcome.

    -The Chew and Katie Couric

  • Dimitrios

I’ve been watching GH since the mid ’90s. I absolutely love this show. Even at its worse I never gave up on it. The new regime is doing a phenomenal job. I am very proud of its ratings. People complaining about they dont like the new writing… WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?? It hasn’t been this good in years! Now, with this new writer, I think Brenda should come back. Maybe this time they will write something better than that stupid Balkan crap. She needs to be redeemed. She was my favorite character, but I was really disappointed on her last return.

  • Matthew

@RJ, Wake up! General Hospital is doing better than both the Chew and Katie. GH owes them nothing.
