Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Hmm, 4 of the T7 DVR’d this week were ABC. Weird.

“Great with DVR” – None of the shows that are actually great with DVR are really in danger. 666′s 2.3 with Live+7 is definitely not great.

    Thanks! Senior moment, I suppose!

    @ Holly

And how many times have you mentioned the fastforward on DVR’s! Someday, somehow, someone will listen! (Smiley face w/ wink goes here)

    @THE OLD MAN

Haha. I’ve considered setting up a document with all the comments like that so I can just copy/paste them when needed…

Sounds like a plan to me! Design it like Bingo, but call it Fan Explanations or something…

    Good luck!

If I’m ABC and I’m looking at those numbers, I would wonder how 666 would have fared on Thursday at 8pm instead of at 10pm on a Sunday. I might even consider switching out 666 and LR for the remainder of their runs to maximize ratings possibilities. I know that LR doesn’t fit ABC’s Sunday line-up, but it sure as hell does not fit Thursday, either.

I still hold by my assessment that we’re going to see one or more networks abandon 10pm within the next few years. The 10pm DVR trend has only accelerated this season, and Live+SD numbers blow almost across the board. How many 10pm shows are absolutely guaranteed to do more than a 2.0 at this point? CSI and Elementary are the only ones I can think of, with a number of other series hovering in that 1.9 to 2.1 mark (Hawaii Five-O, Castle, Parenthood, Nashville, Scandal).

  • Bob

Big woop. If networks are not going to save shows with these numbers than what is the point. A 2.3 for 666 (which I don’t watch) is pretty good for a 10 pm show but since they cancelled the show, it is clear these numbers are garbage.

  • POIFanatic

Its obvious why 666 was cancelled. Compared to Revenge and OUAT’s demo increase, 666′s increase is inconsequential.
Revolution, TBBT, Modern Family, New Girl, Elementary and Grimm’s huge increase in ratings are something to cheer about.

  • Doug

    @Bob – I don’t watch 666 either although I do like the actors.

My point is that when DVR numbers on a 10pm show are that high (as a percentage of its overall audience), it’s probably on too late for its audience. ABC makes money off of the live 1.3, not the DVRed 1.0. If you can convert some of those DVR viewers into live viewers for the rest of the show’s run, you make more money. I think that was my larger point – tinkering with the timeslot probably would do nothing for Last Resort because it doesn’t appear to have that many DVR viewers. 666 does. It likely does not save the show, but does produce better ratings.

  • Mary 1

I still think the only shows younger people feel a need to watch live are reality shows and sports shows. TV shows still get a lot of viewers in the 8 million and up range but increasingly the people watching are the hold outs against change and new technology, people who are older; the people advertisers have no concern about reaching.

  • MikeInCanada

Interesting how the Friday shows do. Shows the shift away from live viewing. This is going to get worse.

  • david

Arrow went up to a 1.5. I hope it gets that in live viewing sometime. TVD got a 2.1, that is amazing.

  • Nick

    Where’s 90210?

  • JR

Surprised Malibu Country didn’t place anywhere, given its 2.3 demo debut.

  • chezmoi

…and all this excludes watching via the internet in the US eg CBS.com I wonder what the NCIS viewership and age profile is on the internet?

  • Steph

And some people say NCIS is going down hill…hahaha
It has 21 million with DVR ratings added in. =)

  • Gail

666 Park Avenue Is one of the new shows that has a different twist to it. It is exciting and different than all the other shows on TV! I vCannot believe they are going to cancel it? I love the show and cannot wait for the next weeks episode ,

  • Sabrina

It seems like these TV Show ratings are based on what channel people accidentally leave their TV on all day. So ALL of the morning news channels have shows with the highest ratings…? Really? I have never heard one person say anything, especially Two and a Half Men, except the tabloids.

The only show that is a hit to me is 666 Park Avenue. It took me a second to get the flow of it and now I am full on addicted and can’t wait for more episodes…and then I hear it’s cancelled. If more people knew what they are missing, more people would be watching.
