Sadly, we're into the broken record portion of the CBS prediction season. With all but a few of their shows now likely or certain to be renewed or canceled, we'll be slicing and dicing the prognosis of the few remaining "toss up" shows more than Iron Chef contestants.

CBS has debuted three new dramas every Fall since 2006-7. I'd expect them to do the same next Fall. So unless they have some schedule wizardry up their sleeves I haven't seen before (holding back Undercover Boss won't help!) they'll need to cancel three of their Fall 2012 dramas to make room for three more next Fall. With Made In Jersey gone, and Vegas a likely cancellation, that means one more Fall drama must go. It's virtually certain that CBS will cancel one of CSI:NYThe Good Wife, or The Mentalist.  And if spring drama Golden Boy is renewed, two from that list will need to be canceled. While readers can make their predictions in the comments this week, I will try and think of a way to make this merry go round discussion a little more interesting next week.

Since CBS typically cancels its lowest rated sitcom each season, last Friday's cancellation of rookie sitcom Partners was absolutely no surprise to any sane person who was paying attention.

Rookie Vegas fell back to a series low 1.6 rating last week. It's week 5 ratings crash was absolutely no fluke, and it's still more likely to be canceled than renewed by the end of the season.

Why are Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods "certain to be renewed"? Both dramas are in their third seasons and need a fourth to reach the "magic" 88 episodes for stripped syndication. Both are "certain to be renewed" for their fourth seasons next year. Read more about that here.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m betting that both “CSI: New York” and “The Good Wife” get canceled. And in the case of “The Good Wife” the cancelation is long overdue.

Well IF Mentalist is on the chopping block I hope they are rapping up the story. I think there big I GOT RED JOHN no OPPS I didn’t get him didn’t work out so well for them – it was frustrating. I wish they could wrap the story line and move on but it seems they have focused the show so much on Red John that once he is caught it would be hard to keep going maybe – I like the show so I wish they could catch him and still survive – will see

CSI:NY cancelled – expensive. Possibly give it 2 more episodes to wrap it up at get it to 200.

Mentalist moves to Friday at 8 – final season.

The Good Wife moves to Friday at 9 to lead into Blue Bloods which needs 88. Both will probably be cancelled next season (even though that pains me to say).

Hawaii 5-0 given a final season to hit 88 on Sundays at 10.

Stop sounding like a broken record & move The Good Wife to Certain Renewal!

Can’t wait to see will the merry-go-round will stop next week.

  • THE OLD MAN

Sorry, Can’t wait to see where the merry-go-round will stop next week

“Sorry, Can’t wait to see where the merry-go-round will stop next week”

    Round and round she goes.

    Where she’ll stop, nobody knows!

    The Good Wife,no question.

TGW will not be cancelled. it will run one more season. It is considered the best drama on network TV so CBS will carry it.

  • DW

like i said in another post , you better move a ncis or person in interest in that sunday 9 pm slot if you want ratings. H50 isnt it. the mentalist isnt going to perform better in that slot. the reason its doing anything is that its up against 666 , walking dead rerun from an hour ago and the final hour of SNF. unless WB drops its fee to keep the mentalist on , i dont see it lasting this season , with TGW , you get to keep the money since cbs owns it. CSI:NY will go , its doing its thing in reruns for some time now.

My favorite shows of this network are:How i met your mother,Two and a half men,The big bang theory,Mike and Molly ,The good wife,Blue Bloods and Person of interest.Waiting also for Rules of engagement.

  • Ben

I vote that CSI: NY will be cancelled. It’s not a prestige show like The Good Wife, (which CBS can brag about keeping a good show with very low ratings on the air), and they cancelled CSI: Miami last May. The Mentalist will probably not be cancelled because it’s more original than spin off CSI: NY.

I think trying to launch new shows at 10pm is going to become harder and harder. So if I was CBS, next year I’d put a new show at 10pm Mondays and then move NCIS: LA and Person of Interest to the 10pm slots on Tuesday and Thursday respectively, with new shows going to 9pm.

    So:

    Sun: Race/H50/TGW
    Mon: Comedies/ New Show
    Tues: NCIS/New Show/NCIS:LA
    Wed: Same
    Thurs: Comedies/ New Show/ POI
    Fri: Boss/ CSI:NY/ Blue Bloods

Elementary and Vegas cancelled and CSI:NY renewed over The Mentalist due to syndication money.

  • Jan

I watch CSI NY and The Good Wife so they can cancel The Mentalist. Be nice if they could get TGW off Sunday nights.

  • ManiacalZebra

Of the three, CSI: NY is the only one I still watch, so that’s likely the one that will be canceled. :(

  • WN

The Mentalist is the only show I watch of the 3, so I would, of course, like it to stay. Since CSI NY has been nearly cancelled several times already, I imagine that is the one that will go, though I am sick and tired of hearing how good TGW is. It’s actually a show I tried to get into, and never could.

CBS has contributed to the fall of The Good Wife with it’s move to Sunday night and it’s nearly constant delay due to football.

  • HT

I don’t understand haters of TV shows, when everyone has a remote control, other choices and an off button. The Good Wife is intelligent, well written, well acted and a money maker for CBS. So if you don’t like the show, turn off or here’s a thought, turn off. I’m suspecting those who don’t like it, don’t understand the sometimes complex plots or base their opinion on the show title (which I did until I flew to London last year and watched 11 hours back to back) and therefore have never given it a shot. It’s a great show.
